A woman repeated a bit of gossip (流言) about a neighbour. Within a few days the whole neighbourhood knew the story. The neighbour was deeply hurt. Later the woman responsible (负责) for spreading the gossip learned that it was completely untrue. She was very sorry and went to a wise old man to find out what she could do to repair the harm.
“Go to the marketplace,” he said, “and buy a chicken, and have it killed, then on your way home, pluck (拔) its feathers and drop them one by one along the road.” Although surprised by this advice, the woman did what she was told.
The next day the wise man said, “Now, go and collect all those feathers you dropped yesterday and bring them back to me.”
The woman followed the same road, but she was so discouraged when she found the wind had blown all the feathers away. After searching for hours, she returned with only three in her hand.
“You see,” said the old man, “it’s easy to drop them, but it’s impossible to get them back. So it is with gossip. It doesn’t take much to spread a gossip, but once you do, you can never completely undo the wrong.”

Mr． Berman， who was over 60years old， lived downstairs． He was a painter， too， but he never sold anything， and he drank a lot． Sue told him all about what Joanna was saying．
"She can't really think that this will happen! The poor woman!" he said．

Finally there was only one last leaf on the ivy plant． After a few windy days， the leaf was still there．
"Susie，" said Joanna， "I've been a bad girl． That last leaf is telling me that it was very wrong of me to want to die． Bring me some soup， dear．"
The next day， the doctor said： "She's out of danger． But poor Mr． Berman downstairs is dying． There's no hope for him， I'm afraid．"
That afternoon Sue went into Joanna's bedroom．
"Joanna dear， Mr． Berman died today． And do you know why？ One terrible， cold wet night he took a ladder and some green and yellow paint and he climbed up， and ﹣ oh， look at the last ivy leaf on the wall! Why didn't it ever move in the wind？ Can't you see？ It was Mr． Berman's last great picture． He painted it there the night that the last leaf fell．"

Hi，my name is Evan and being the eldest child in the family surely has its disadvantages．First of all，I have to share all my toys and games with my younger Siblings，William and Julia．Of course，they don't need to return the favour because I'm totally uninterested in their things．Besides that，Julia and William are always hanging around me．It's especially annoying when I have a friend over．We look for a secluded place in the house where they can't disturb （打扰） us，but within minutes，they've found us and are asking to join in．I just can't seem to get a moment's peace．At meal times，I have to eat whatever is on my plate regardless of the portion size or taste．William and Julia only need to try one bite when it's not their favorite food．Not only this，but I'm expected to be cooperative （合作的，配台的） at all times because I'm the oldest and need to be a role model for them．
It doesn't seem fair either that I have more chores to do around the house than Julia and William put together．Plus，when it comes to practising our musical instruments，I have to practise more than double the time．Oh，and the worst part of it all is the huge quantities of homework I get compared to them．
