Two University of Colorado professors said they have demonstrated(证明) the teachers’ use of red pens in marking corrections and grading papers often affects students negatively and destroys teacher-student relationships.
News. Com. Au and ABC Science reported a paper by University of Colorado sociologists Richard Dukes and Healther Albanesi documenting their new study was published in The Social Science Journal, and that some educators have expressed doubt about the team’s findings.
The Colorado study suggested that because red is an “emotive” color expressing an exciting emotion, corrections penned in red ink were more likely to be seen by students as “shouting”, an “emotional loading” that could cause anxiety or feelings of blame against the teacher and lead to rejection of otherwise constructive feedback. Instead, teachers should use blue pens to mark papers, Richard Dukes and Healther Albanesi concluded.
ABC Science reported that students whose papers were graded with blue ink tended to give teachers higher scores.
But a University of British Colombia study published in the journal Science found both blue and red affected motivation and performance, with red attracting attention and blue increasing creativity, Science Daily reported.

In his speech addressed to the students of Tsinghua University on Nov. 16, 2005, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger told them of his early experience as a weightlifter.
“…Now, I remember the first real workout (训练) I had. Eight miles away from my home village in Austria there was a gymnasium, and I rode there on a bicycle and trained for half an hour, because they said that after half an hour you should stop, otherwise, your body would get really sore (疼痛). But after half an hour I looked at my body, and nothing had happened. So I said, ‘I’d better work out for another half an hour.’ So I lifted some more. My strength didn’t improve; I didn’t see the muscles pop out or anything like that, so I trained for another half an hour. Then I left the gym and rode home, but after the first mile, I got numb (麻木)—I couldn’t feel the handle of the bicycle anymore—and I fell off the bike. I got up and tried it again. After another few yards. I fell off again. And I tried it three or four more times and couldn’t ride my bicycle because my body was so numb and my legs felt like noodles.
The next morning when I got up, my body was so sore that I couldn’t even lift my arms to comb my hair. But I learn a very important lesson—that pain means progress. Pain is progress. Each time my muscles were sore from a workout, I knew that they were growing and that they were getting stronger…”

Social practice has been more and more popular in schools. Senior school students are asked to get involved in the community and get some ideas of it.
Surely, social practice does good to senior school students in many ways. Firstly, social practice can offer students a chance to get in touch with society and deal with different kinds of people. In this way students can gain some precious social experience, which will be of great use to their future career. Secondly, students can apply what they have learned in class to practical work. Thus, it enables students to get to know themselves more clearly. Thirdly, social practice can bring them some financial reward and make them more independent of their family.
However, some problems may arise if no correct guidance is made. For example, some students get overly interested in social practice and want to work full-time and earn more money. Consequently, they will neglect their studies. At the same time, through social practice, some students are likely to get in touch with the dark side of society, which will affect their future values.

BEIJING, August 19--Shanghai will launch a pilot textbook recycling scheme in secondary schools from this fall semester to reduce textbook paper consumption, the Shanghai Education Commission revealed yesterday.
The first batch of textbooks to be recycled or reused will be middle school music material. Books on other subjects such as art, physical education and even major subjects like Chinese, math and English, will be included gradually.
The schools taking part in the program will have to purchase new textbooks about every five years and distribute them for students’ use during class sessions. But the books will have to be collected and kept on campus after class, rather than allowing students to take them back home, so that they could be passed on to the next batch of students.
Possessing one’s own brand-new textbooks has been a routine for local elementary school students for decades. The practice, however, leads to huge paper consumption, officials said.
For instance, there are nearly 2 million elementary school students in the city, with an estimated 4,000 tons of paper needed each year. Had these books been reused for five years, more than 80,000 trees could have been saved.
In western countries, such as Australia and America began this practice years ago, which set a good example to other countries, esp. developing ones. (Edited from Shanghai Daily)
