The Mermaid Balloon

"I have an idea,"her mother said."Let's write your daddy a letter. We can tie the letter to a balloon and send it up to heaven(天堂).What should we write?"
Desiree told her mother to write,"Happy Birthday,Daddy.I love you and miss you. Please write me on my birthday in January."
Desiree's mother wrote the message and their address on a small piece of paper. Then they went to a store to buy a balloon.Desiree looked quickly at the balloons and said,"That one!The one with the mermaid(美人鱼)!"

Desiree released the balloon in California. The wind caught the balloon and carried it east.Four days later,it came down 3,000 miles away, near a lake in eastern Canada. The name of the lake was Mermaid Lake.
Wade MacKinnon,a Canadian man,was hunting ducks at Mermaid Lake when he found Desiree's balloon and letter. He took them home to his wife. She decided to send Desiree a birthday present. She also wrote her a letter. The letter said:
Dear Desiree,
Happy Birthday from your daddy.I guess you wonder who we are.Well,my husband,Wode, went duck hunting, and guess what he found?A mermaid balloon that you sent your daddy. There are no stores in heaven,so your daddy wanted someone to do his shopping for him.I think he picked us because we live in a town called Mermaid.I know your daddy loves you very much and will always watch over you.
Lots of love,
The MacKinnons
Desiree's mother wrote the Mackinnons to thank them.During the next few weeks, she and the MacKinnons telephoned each other often. Then Desiree and her mother flew to Canada to meet the MacKinnons. The MacKinnons took them to Mermaid Lake and showed them where the balloon landed.

People often say,"What a coincidence(巧合)﹣the mermaid balloon landed at Mermaid Lake!"Desiree's mother is not sure it was just a coincidence. She says,"I think that somehow my husband picked the MacKinnons. It was his way to send his love to Desiree.Desiree understands now that her father is with her always."

Move as Millions,Survive as One
Great white sharks in the Pacific Ocean.Wildebeest in Africa.Arctic terns in the Atlantic. At first, these animals seem completely different. One swims, one walks, and the other flies. But they all have one thing in common. They all migrate.
Some migrating groups move to a place with a better temperature. Some go to find food or wather. The groups travel as one, trying to survive(生存).During the trip, they face many different challenges. One challenge is distance. Some migrating animals take very long trips. They go far away from their home areas. For example, one great white shark swam from Australia to South African and back.In nine months,it swam about 20,000 kilometers.
Another chanllenge is finding enough food and water during the journey. For example, each Malielephant needs over 200 liters of water each day.To get this, they need to go from one waterhole to another.
In addition, migrating animals have to avoid other animals that want to eat them. For example, the zebra has to stay away from lions.Traveling as a group helps keep them safe. All the zebras in the group can watch for danger. When one zebra is in trouble, the other members make a circle around it.
By working as a group, migrating animals can survive some of the world's most extraordinary journeys.

The Building That Moves
Everyone knows that buildings don't move. They can't change the way they look. However, architect(建筑师)David Fisher wants to change that.
Fisher has an amazing idea.He wants to make 80﹣story buildings that change shape. Each floor will move around slowly. The floors will move at different speeds.Because of this, the shape of the building is always changing."These buildings will never look the same,"says Fisher.
His idea is an interesting one. However,Fisher doesn't stop there. He also wants the building to be"green".The building will make its own energy. In most buildings, only the top floor has a roof(屋顶).In Fisher's building, each floor will have its own roof. The roofs each have solar panels(太阳能板).This means a lot more solar energy. Also, machines between each floor of the building will catch the wind. They will turn the wind into energy.
Fisher's ideas sound impossible. However, that's what people also said before humans traveled into space!
16.The passage is mainly talking about .
A.buildings for the future
B.the life of an architect
C.how green buildings work
17.The underlined word"80﹣story"means the building has 80 .

A.is tall and always moving
B.is tall and has many solar panels
C.is always moving and has many solar panels

A.the sun
B.the water
C.the wind
20.Why does the writer say"that's what people also said before humans traveled into space"? _
A.To show why Fisher's building will never work.
B.To show why Fisher's building is like a spaceship.
C.To show that unusual ideas can sometimes work.
Some days, don't you think,"Wouldn't it be nice if the laundry would just do itself?"Self﹣cleaning clothes may sound crazy. But Australian researchers have found a way to make something like this possible!
A team at RMIT University in Melbourne,Australia, found a way to put special nanostructures (纳米结构) into clothing, which can then clean the clothes. When sunlight hits the nanostructures, they break down the dirt and stains (污渍) that don't belong on your clothes.
The nanostructures don't break down the actual clothing because cotton and the other clothing materials are too strong to be broken down.According to CNN,the researchers cover the clothing in a solution made of silver and copper (铜) nanostructures. All it takes is 40minutes of sunlight and your clothes will look as good as new.
So if you spill on yourself during lunch, you can step outside for a walk, and it will be clean by the time you go inside. It not only makes your life easier, but it can also be good for the environment.
According to the US Department of Energy, the average load of laundry uses about 25gallons (about 94liters) of water.Water is a very important resource,so using less of it to wash clothes is better for the environment. But one of the scientists at RMIT University knows more needs to be done.
"There's more work to do before we can start throwing out our washing machines,"said Dr Rajesh Ramanathan,"but this is a strong foundation (基础)."
So what's the next step?Ramanathan wants to either start selling the solution by itself or convincing (说服) clothing makers to treat the clothing with the solution while clothes are being made.
57.How do the clothing with the nanostructures get cleaned?

59.What does the underlined word"solution"in the last paragraph mean?
A.Machines
B.Clothes.

D.Design.
60.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Silver and copper sell well.
B.The solution is not put into practice.
C.Clothing makes certainly like the solution.
D.We don't need washing machines any more.
A city without cars would be very strange, right? But Venice is such a city.
Venice is in the northeast of Italy. It wasn't built on land, like Beijing or Shanghai, but on more than 110islands.Seawater is everywhere around the city.
Even so,travel isn't difficult. The waterways have always been the best way to get around. There are 117waterways and more than 400bridges that can guide you where you want to go.People in Venice move from place to place by boat.
Water makes the city special, but it is also a big problem.Sometimes tourists will have such strange experiences. One moment they walk across the Rialto Bridge, and there's nothing special. But when they come back to the bridge an hour later,it's underwater and everyone is wearing rain shoes.
Once, people used too much underground water. This made the city get lower little by little. Now the city has gone down by 23centimeters.Another problem is the rising seawater. The temperature has risen over the years. This has made the ice of the Arctic Ocean (北冰洋) melt( 融化).Every year, high waters hit the city in autumn and winter. When a lot of water comes, more than half of the city is underwater.
Scientists are trying different ways to stop the city from getting even lower. The Italian government has asked some of Italy's biggest companies to build the MOST project, which was planned to be build under the seawater to stop the rising water.Anyway, this project is helping solve the problem.
