My friend Michelle is blind, but you’d never know it. She makes such good use of her other__1 , including her “sixth sense”, that she seldom gives the impression (印象) that she’s 2__ anything. It’s really amazing.
Michelle 3 her children pretty much like the rest of us, except that she isn’t too hard on them. Her children really benefit a lot from her 4 __attitude. She knows when to clean the house, and she moves around so fast that 5 often don’t realize she’s blind.
I6 this the first time after my six-year-old daughter, Kayla, went to play there. When Kayla came home, she was very 7 about her day. She told me they had baked cookies, played games and done art projects. But she was8 excited about her finger-painting project.
“Mom, guess what?” said Kayla, all smiles. “I learned how to 9 colors today! Blue and red make purple, and yellow and blue make green! And Michelle10 with us”.
To my great11 , my child had learnt about color from a blind friend! Then Kayla continued, “Michelle told me my 12 showed joy, pride and a sense of accomplishment (成就). She really 13 what I was doing!” Kayla said she had never known how good finger paints felt14 Michelle showed her how to paint without looking at her paper.
I realized Kayla didn’t know that Michelle was blind. It had just never come15 in conversation. When I told my daughter Michelle was blind, she was 16 for a moment. At first, she didn’t believe me. “But Mommy, Michelle knew exactly what was in my picture!” Kayla __17 . I knew my child was _18 because Michelle had listened to Kayla describe her art work. Michelle had also “heard” Kayla’s 19 in her work.
We were silent for a minute. Then Kayla said slowly, “You know, Mommy, Michelle did ‘see’ my picture. She just used my __20__.” Indeed, she uses a special type of “vision” that all mothers have.

The sun shines brightly as I leave school, get into my car, and head for Bradley Hospital. This year, as a senior at Seekonk High School, I have been given the opportunity to leave the usual classroom setting once a week to volunteer.
I 1 to spend this valuable time working with mentally disabled children at Bradley Children’s Hospital. I work 2 a teacher in the outpatient/pre-school section, in a classroom with two children— a classroom very different from 3 I have ever known. The difference of this classroom is 4 the children have been diagnosed with a mental disease. One child is autistic and non-verbal(自闭和不说话的), using supportive 5 . The other has a condition called PDD (one step above autism), and is 6 non-verbal. Both childrenrequire strong 7 and a lot of attention. This combination creates an atmosphere which is both demanding and sympathetic.
My 8 in the classroom is not only to help the teacher, but to become part of the children’s 9 experience. I work one-on-one completing academics with a student. 10 , we work as a group on such activities as cooking, artwork, abstract reasoning. Everyday activities, which may be taken for granted by others, 11 a lot of strength from the children. This has opened my eyes vastly.
One of the 12 reasons why I volunteer to take the work is that I desire to help those who are less 13 . However, it has also helped me to realize my competence. I now know that I have the 14 to work with the disabled. I have lost my fear, and I 15 myself a lot more.
It is true that my work is very 16 ; there are many days that I 17 Bradley exhausted emotionally and physically. There have been times when I have left on the edge of tears 18 . But pity doesn’t heal, love does. And I have grown to love these children in my own way, 19 I see them only once a week. This experience has been both rewarding and satisfying. I’ve learned also that I do have the ability to make a difference in their lives, no matter how small it may be. One smile makes it all 20 .

I can still remember the first day when I met my best friend. She had just moved into the neighborhood and her grandmother brought her down to1 me. I hid behind my mother and she hid behind her grandmother,2 to look at each other. Soon, we lost the shyness and started playing with each other. In 7th grade, I first lost3 with her. She was 4 family problems and I deserted her. 5 of my new friends liked her6 they knew she had “problems”.
It was last year when I noticed the7 . I guess I was just to catch up in high school to realize she 8 someone there for her. I didn’t know 9, but she started cutting herself!
She was 10 from clinical depression(抑郁), and had to go to a 11 during the day. I was very upset at first but with the late night 12 , and meeting each other at midnight. I wanted to be there for her since her new best friend once 13 her since people were calling her crazy.
Yesterday she came to me and said this:“I never knew what a best friend was 14 you were the only person that would 15 me from cutting; the only person that ever made me feel better about myself and my problems. You don’t know this but I was trying to 16 myself that night you called me. You didn’t even know you were 17 me. I owe you so much.”
We both cried. And I guess a kind of 18 from my life is:“never give up on your friends”. Even if they aren’t as cool as others, or people think they are 19 , they need someone there. If you desert them, you will only be 20 yourself. So if a friend needs you, and you care for them, you can never desert them.
