Parts of Africa are covered by a dark cloud. But this is no rain cloud. It is a living cloud made of billions of locusts (蝗虫) and they are eating everything in their path.
And now in order to fight against this disaster, a radio station in Senegal, West Africa, is offering listeners 5 kilograms of rice if they can catch and kill 50 kilograms of locusts. “We think this idea will get more people to take part in the fight against the locusts,” said Abdoulaye Ba, from Sud-Fm, a radio station in one of Senegal’s worst affected area.

Experts say many people in the areas will go hungry because of this disaster. What’s worse, governments in the areas don’t have enough things to fight the locusts.
Although leaders of 12 countries have agreed on a plan, it is not enough. ‘We are now treating 6,000 hectares (公顷) per day with pesticide (杀虫剂), but we need to treat 20,000 hectares per day in order to have any hope of controlling this disaster,’ said Mohamed Abdallahi Ould Babah, leader of locust control(控制) in Mauritania.

1970 was World Conservation(保护)Year. The United Nations wanted everyone to know that the world was in danger. They hoped something could be done.
Here is one example of the problem. At one time there were 1,300 kinds of plants, trees and flowers in Holland(荷兰),but now only 866 are left. The others have been destroyed(毁灭)by modern people and their science. We are polluting earth, air, water and everything around us. We can’t live without these things. If things go on like this, we shall destroy ourselves.
What will happen in the future? Perhaps it’s more important to ask “What must we do?” More and more young people have known this. Many of them are helping to save our earth. For example, they plant trees. In a small town in the United States, a large group of girls cleaned the banks of 11 kilometers of their river. Young people may hear about conversation through a song called “No one’s going to change our world”. It was made by Cliff Gichard and other singers. A good memory is a great help in learning a language. Everybody learns his own language by remembering what he hears when he is a small child, and some children—like boys and girls who live abroad(国外)with their parents—seem to learn two languages almost as easily as one. In school it is not easy to learn a second language because the pupils have so little time for it, and they are busy with other subjects, too.
Our mind is rather like a camera, but it takes photos not only of what we see but of what we feel, hear, smell and taste. When we take a real photo with a camera, there is much to do before the photo is finished and ready to show to our friends. A recent report from China Daily says that about 18% of our teenagers can have problems with their minds. Some students become worried because they have to study very hard. Others have trouble getting on well with others.
Zhang Qiang, a Junior 2 student from Sichuan, could not understand his teachers in class and was doing badly in his lessons. He was afraid of exams. When he looked at the exam paper, he would be very nervous and couldn’t think of anything to write.
Another student, a 15-year-old girl called Wu Yan from Guangdong often argued with her classmates even her parents because of some different ideas. She became so angry with them that she started to cut her finger with a knife.
However, many students who have problems won’t go for advice or help. Some think they will look strange if they go to see a doctor. Others don’t want to talk about their secrets. In order to solve the teenagers’ problems, here is some advice:

Who wants to carry a bulky bag to school? No children. Nobody wants one shoulder to be lower than the other, and paining, too. In India, most of people would look at the reduction(减少) of textbooks as a way out. But in a country like America, there are always more choices. A company called goReader has created a “school bag” which is the size of a laptop computer, weighing about 1.5 kg. The goReader has a color screen and can “hold” all the textbooks that a student may need, says a report in The Asian Age newspaper.
The company plans to work closely with the publishers(出版商) of textbooks so that these books can be supplied on the Internet. All the students will have to do is to download their textbooks from the Internet. Taking notes and marking important parts of a lesson can be done just as lots of students have done on their textbooks before.
At present, the plan is being tested out in a university. Richard Katzmann, the owner of this company is having his creation tested at Chicago's DePaul University, where he studied. Does that mean it is goodbye to the new paper, and the smell of the black ink?
