I hadn’t even got a chance to enter the store before an African American woman approached me and asked if I would help her return an item. The item she has ___  __ was intended for her daughter, but she had already received a similar one. The lady ___  __ to exchange the item for something else in the store but she was told she needed an ID or the deal could not take place.
I went to the __  __ with the woman so we could use my ID. The sales associate immediately started ___  ___ her of asking the first random person she saw to help her. Although that was true , I didn’t understand why it mattered. After all, not everyone is given the opportunity to __  __ an ID in this country.
Then, we asked to speak with a manager, who explained that there was no way to return the item without a receipt and then went on to say the woman could not ___  ___ she purchased the item.
“If I , a young white female, were to enter the store and request you to make an exchange without a receipt, I would not be ___  __ the privilege--- as I have proof from the past.” I said. He must have realized at that moment what he had done, because he ___  __ to exchange the item.

When I was 17 years old, I left my comfortable home in a wealthy Midwestern suburb to live as a foreign exchange student in a lower-middle-class neighborhood in a foreign country. I in an apartment with no elevators, no dishwashers and one washer for 300 . The tile (瓷砖) floors were always and the rainy winter days there seemed endless. I to wash my clothes by hand in the bathtub and water was so costly, I trained myself to my waist-length hair in less than five minutes.
At that time there were no cell phones and the Internet didn’t exist. So for six months I had no at all with my family or friends in the US. Living abroad and developing in a foreign language required persistence and determination. I made many mistakes the way. Now I’ve transformed (转变) my memories into my medals of honor (荣誉勋章). They’re the treasured stories that offer wisdom, provide me with insights into friends and family and provide me with the that I can surpass future challenges.

Two weeks before Christmas, Mother told me we were going to my grandmother's house for the holiday. Grandma and Uncle Henry lived on a farm some 15 miles out of town. They had no electricity or running water and what I considered the “good things” in life. They made no plans for Christmas. When Christmas Eve arrived, Mom told me in her best “I-mean-it” voice to all the decorations(装饰物) from our tree. She packed those up, all the trimmings(材料) for a turkey dinner.
Christmas morning dawned perfectly, with the sun brightly across a fresh blanket of snow. I sulked(生气) silently in the backseat of the car because my parents made our to grandma's. This was going to be the Christmas ever! Grandma was to see us as we walked up to her door. “What on earth are you doing here?” She stammered(结巴地说). “We weren't expecting . It's Christmas, and I don't even have a turkey to cook for you.” I knew . Mom said as we set boxes of things on the kitchen table. “That's we brought one with us.” “We have a tree,” Mom insisted. “ , what will we do with all these decorations?” Uncle Henry quickly knew Mom's meaning. He called me to join him, and we a perfect Christmas tree. Soon the house smelled fresh and piney as we decorated the tree, and the day was a festive air. The turkey dinner was very good, too. I was actually beginning to enjoy this unusual Christmas day!
Dessert was forgotten Mom came out with the final surprise-----a flaming(燃烧的) pudding! “Merry Christmas, mother,” Mom said. “Dear me!” Grandma gasped. “I haven't seen a flaming pudding since I left England before I was married.” Tears of filled her eyes.
I could not keep the tears my eyes, either. I knew then that Mom had also given me the best Christmas present ever—she had taught me what a beautiful thing it is to give.
