The New York City Marathon was started by a man named Fred Lebow. It began in 1970 as a small, unimportant race. Only 127 people ran, and just 55 0fthem finished. They ran around Central Park four times. Few people watched them run. However, over the years the marathon grew and became more popular.

Today people come from all over the world to run in the marathon. Runners must be at least 18 years old, but there is no age limit(限制). In fact, the oldest runner was an 89-year-old man. Recently, more than 27,000 people ran in the New York City Marathon. Large crowds cheered the runners and offered them cold drinks and encouragement.
The course(路线) of the marathon has changed, too. Instead of running around Central Park, the runners go through the five districts of New York City: Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island. The marathon begins at the base(基座)of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge in Staten Island. The runners go across the bridge into Brooklyn. Then they go up through Queens and into the Bronx. The marathon finishes in Central Park in Manhattan. The complete course is 26. 2 miles, and takes the best runners less than 3 hours.
Although it has changed since 1970, the New York City Marathon is always exciting. Through the years, many unusual events(事件) have happened during the marathon. For example, Pat Tuz and John Weilbaker got married a few minutes before the race. Then they ran the race with their party members. Some people run the whole marathon as a family.  Other people run the race backwards.
In the fall of 1992, Fred Lebow, the founder(创始人) ofthe New York City Marathon,  slowly ran his last race. He was very ill with cancer, but he did not want to stop running. In October 1994, Fred died.
However, the New York City, Marathon, and all its excitement, will continue for many years to come.

There is not enough oil in the world now. As time goes by ,it becomes less and less ,so what are we going to do when it runs out? Perhaps we will go back to use horses ,carriages and bicycles .
In the Second World War ,some people didn't use gas made from petroleum (石油)in their cars .They made gas from wood and plants instead . The cars didn't go fast ,but they ran ,so this was better than nothing. However, in the future, we can't cut down all our trees to make gas; we need our trees for other things, too.
Besides different types of gas, we can also use electricity(电)to run our cars but first we must make the electricity !Some countries have coal and they make electricity with that, but we might not always have coal, either. Other countries have big ,strong rivers and they can use the power of water to turn turbines(涡轮机) and make electricity more easily and cheaply.
We are also able to get power from the ocean tides. We put turbines into the mouth of the river .Then the tide comes in ,the water turns the turbines and then it goes out ,it turns them again.
Which of these ways will be used to run our cars in the future?

The worst danger is a house on fire when people are asleep. Always be ready to leave through a window into the garden by making sure you can open it if necessary. If you should be on holiday in a tall building or hotel, make sure you know where the fire escape(太平梯) is . When you can’t find any way out, try to find pieces of cloth and make a rope to get out of a window to safety. If you smell burning in your home, get out right away. If you can’t breathe properly because of smoke on your way out, crawl(爬行) on your hands and knees because smoke rises and the air will be cleaner near the floor. Smoke is a killer and more people have died from breathing it in than actually being burnt.
Fire in a cinema, hall or public place often means people pushing to reach a door. Keep your head up with arms up in front of your chest(胸).This protects your chest and gives you the best chance to breathe. Above all, don’t get frightened!
In a room filled with smoke ,you’d better crawl on the floor because__________.

Smoking in indoor public places including public working places, public transport vehicles and some other special outdoor working places has been banned(禁止)in China since January 2011.Let’s look at the following advantages of banning smoking.
First, banning smoking will not only help in saving smokers from health problems and diseases, but will also be good for passive(被动)smokers. When the smoker is smoking in a restaurant, the people around him are sure to breathe in the smoke and suffer from the diseases an active smoker gets. If smoking is banned, spread of these diseases can be controlled.
Next, banning smoking will put stress on smokers to give up. Since a smoker is prevented from smoking, he will learn how to live without smoking for long hours. When a smoker doesn’t smell or see anybody around him smoking, it might reduce his wish to smoke too. As a result, people have to give up smoking.
Smoking in public places influences non-smokers to start smoking, especially adolescents. When teens see people around them smoking, they will follow them easily. Thus the number of teen smokers will increase. Also asthma(哮喘)and other problems are often seen in children living around smokers. So if it is banned, these places will become safe for children and teenagers.
Looking from the economic point of view, smoking should be banned to increase work productivity(生产率).Employees(雇员)who smoke usually take breaks to smoke while working. So the number of hours they put in their work is smaller.
If you see from the environment point of view, smoking should be banned. Smoking causes air pollution. If it is banned, it will help keep the environment from getting worse.
________doesn’t belong to a non-smoking place.
