LONDON—Scientists have found an unusual way to prevent our planet from overheating: move it to a cooler spot. All you have to do is to send a few comets (彗星) in the direction of Earth, and its orbit (轨道) will be changed. Our world will then be sent moving into a safer older part of the solar system.
This idea for improving our climate comes from a group of US NASA (美国航空航天局) engineers and American astronomers. They say their plan could add another six billion years to the useful lifetime of our planet—hopefully doubling its working life.
The plan put forward by Dr. Laughlin, and his colleagues Don Korycansky and Fred Adams, needs carefully directing a comet or asteroid (小行星) so that it passes close by our planet and sends some of its gravitational energy (重力势能) to Earth.
“Earth’s orbital speed would increase as a result and we would move to a higher orbit away from the sun,” Laughlin said.
Engineers would then direct their comet so that it passed close to Jupiter (木星) or Saturn(土星). The comet would pick up energy from one of these giant planets. Later its orbit would bring it back to Earth, and the process would be repeated.
In the short term, the plan provides an ideal way to worldwide warming, although the team was actually worried about a much greater danger. The sun is certain to heat up in about a billion years and so “seriously compromise” our biosphere (生物圈)—by cooking us.
That’s why the group decided to try to save Earth.
The plan has one or two worrying sides, however. For a start, space engineers would have to be very careful about how they directed their asteroid or comet towards Earth. The smallest miscalculation (误算) in orbit could fire it straight at Earth—with deadly results.
There is also the question of the moon. As the present issue of Scientific American magazine points out, if Earth was pushed out of its present location, it is “most likely the moon would be stripped (剥离) away from Earth,” it states. This would greatly change our planet’s climate. What makes the scientists plan to move Earth?
A.A few comets are moving to the direction of Earth. |
B.Earth’s working life is coming to an end soon. |
C.Earth will become too hot for mankind to keep alive. |
D.The moon is moving farther and farther away from Earth. |
If the plan is successful, Earth will have a working life of ________ years.
A.12 billion | B.6 billion | C.18 billion | D.24 billion |
What serious problems might the plan cause according to the passage?
A.The comet might hit Earth and man might lose the moon. |
B.Earth might be moved too far away and man might die because of the coldness. |
C.The comet might hit Jupiter or Saturn and never return to Earth. |
D.Earth’s working life might be greatly shortened. |

It was another sad day. I came home from school, changed my clothes and got ready for work. I worked at a local restaurant in town as a waiter. I didn't like the job very much.
When I was working, three elderly ladies walked in and sat at a table by the windows. I was quite busy, trying to clean up all the dirty tables. These elderly women were watching how hard I was working to make sure every table was clean and ready for the next customers. When they finished their meals,I took their plates back to the kitchen. They talked to me for about five minutes about school, how I was doing, what grade I was in and what I planned to do in the future.
As they were leaving, they walked past me and one of them said to me in a gentle voice,"You must be successful," And that was it. They left the restaurant and I was surprised. I had tears in my eyes, because they gave me the reason to trust myself. They picked my spirit up from being down and out and gave me a reason to keep on working hard and to give it my all. People used to tell me that I couldn't have a career in television until I had a degree and was out of college. I'm now a co﹣anchor(主持人) of a student﹣produced television show. I just finished an internship(实习) at a local television station this past summer. And the best thing is, I'm only 17 years old and I am a student in a high school.

Kids love to run here, there and everywhere. But as we age,we seem to lose the enjoyment of running. This form of exercise, though, offers great benefits(好处)to everyone. It helps with weight control, and it slows down the effects of aging. It helps us relax and increase confidence.Running keeps the heart healthy and muscles and bones strong. It reduces the risk of heart diseases. In addition to health, running has other benefits. You can run almost anywhere:You don't need a gym membership or expensive equipment(器械).For that reason and others, running is a favourite form of exercise for many people.
If you want to run,how can you get started? It is not wise to start exercising when you are not feeling well.If you haven't exercised in awhile, you should check with your doctor. He or she will let you know if you're healthy enough to try running. If your doctor says OK,you're ready to go!
What's next?
Choose a good pair of running shoes. They don't need to be expensive;they just need to give your feet good support(支撑).
Find a running partner. On days when you don't feel like exercising,he or she can help encourage you.If you can't find anyone who enjoys running, take your dog along. It is always ready to go outside, and the exercise makes it healthier, too.
Pay attention while you are running . Be careful with the traffic and run facing the cars coming towards you.Don't wear headphones while running outside. They stop you from hearing cars, stray dogs(流浪狗),etc.Wear bright clothing in order to be seen easily.
If you're ready to start, why not take part in the next"Let's Run"?The event is to raise money for the children and parents in need. It's a great way to experience the pleasure of running while giving a helping hand to the poor.

=If you look at the top of your phone, you'll usually see a little symbol that says 3G or 4G. The"G"stands for the"generation"of your mobile network. But these symbols will become things of the past after 5G fully arrives.
On March 30th,2019,Shanghai vice﹣mayor Wu Qing made the first 5G video call on a Huawei Mate X smartphone,CGTN reported.Shanghai has also become the first city in China to start testing 5G networks.
Now,4G takes about 100 to 200 milliseconds(毫秒)to send and receive data(数据).But 5G will get it down to 1 millisecond or less. This big change will not only make our mobile Internet faster. It can be used in many other ways as well.
For example,5G will help to make self﹣driving cars safer.Today's self﹣driving test cars have one problem﹣ lag. When the car"sees"an obstacle(障碍物),it sends this information to a data center and receives instructions. However,it takes time to send and receive this information. With this kind of lag,the cars might crash(撞击)because they don't receive instructions in time. With 5G,this lag will be greatly lowered, making the cars safer, according to CNN.
5G could also be used to power the Internet of Things(IOT).This refers to a large online network that connects all things and people.Fast Internet speeds will be the key to developing this technology. For example, with IOT under 5G,your refrigerator could automatically(自动地)place an order online for eggs when it finds that there are no eggs left inside.
All in all,5G will shape every type of technology that it touches. And you won't have to wait too long for that to happen.
