Having returned from her round trip (往返旅程), the angry woman stood outside the ticket office of the station. “The railway owes (应给予) me£12,” she said to Harry Jenks, the young man working at the office, “you sold me a ticket for May 22nd, but there was no ship from Jersey that night. So my daughter and I had to stay in a hotel. It cost me £12.”
Harry was worried. He remembered selling the woman a return ticket. “Come into the office, madam,” he said politely, “I’ll just check the Jersey timetable for May 22nd.”
The woman and her little girl followed him inside. She  was quite right, as Harry soon discovered. There was no sailing on May 22nd. How could he have made such a careless mistake? He shouldn’t have sold her a ticket for that day. Wondering what to do, he smiled at the child. “You look sunburnt,” he said to her. “Did you have a nice holiday in Jersey?”
“Yes,” She answered, shyly. “The beach was lovely. And I can swim too!”
“That’s fine,” said Harry. “My little girl can’t swim a bit yet. Of course, she’s only three…”
“I’m four,” the child said proudly. “I’ll be four and a half.” Harry turned to the mother. “I remember your ticket, madam,” he said. “But you didn’t get one for your daughter, did you?”
“Err, well…” the woman looked at the child. “I mean… she hasn’t started school yet. She’s only four.”
“A four-year-old child must have a ticket, madam. A child’s return ticket to Jersey costs… let me see…£13.50. So if the railway pays your hotel, you will owe £1.50. The law is  the law, but since the fault was mine…”
The woman stood up, took the child’s hand and left the office.

Be careful! Some people may use the truth to deceive. When someone tells you something that is true, but misses important information that should be included, he can create a false impression(印象).
For example, someone might say, "I just won 100 dollars on the lottery(彩票). It was great. I took that ticket back to the store and they gave me 100 dollars!"
This man is a winner, right? Maybe, maybe not. We then discover that he paid 200 dollars for 200 tickets, and only one ticket won. He's really a big loser.
He didn't say anything that was false, but he didn't give the other important information. That's called a half-truth. Half-truths are not lies, but in fact they are dishonest.
Advertisements sometimes use half-truths. It's against the law to lie in advertisements, so they try to deceive with the truth. An advertisement might say, "Nine-tenths of doctors believe that Fancy Pills will be good to cancer. " It doesn't tell you that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Fancy Company.
This kind of thing happens too often. It's a sad fact of life: Lies are lies, and sometimes the truth can lie as well.

A year ago,I paid no attention to English idioms (习语), though my teacher told us the importance again and again. But soon, the importance of English idioms was shown in an amusing experience.
One day, I happened to meet an Englishman on the road, and soon we began to talk. As I was talking about how I was studying English, the foreigner seemed to be surprised. Gently shaking his head, shrugging his shoulders, he said,“You don’t say!” “You don’t say!” I was puzzled. I thought , perhaps this is not a right topic. “Well, I’d better change the topic.” So I said to him. “Well, shall we talk about the Great Wall? By the way, have you ever been there?” “Certainly, everyone back home will laugh at me if I leave China without seeing it. It was wonderful.” He was deep in thought when I began to talk like a tourist guide. “The Great Wall is one of the wonders in the world. We are very proud of it.” Soon I was interrupted (打断) again by his words: “You don’t say!” I couldn’t help asking, “Why do you ask me not to talk about it?” “Well, I didn’t ask you to do so,” he answered, greatly surprised. I said, “Didn’t you say ‘you don’t say’?” Hearing this, the Englishman laughed to tears. He began to explain, “ ‘You don’t say’ actually means ‘really!’ It is an expression of surprise. Perhaps you don’t pay attention to English idioms.” I realized I had made a fool of myself. Since then I have been more careful with idiomatic expressions. A good way to pass an exam is to work hard every day in the year. You may fail in an exam if you are lazy for most of the year and then work hard only a few days before the exam.
Do not remember only grammar when you are learning English. Try to read stories in English and speak in English as often as you can. A few days before the exam you should go to bed early. Do not study late at night. Before you start the exam, read carefully over the exam paper. Try to understand the exact meaning of each question before you pick up your pen to write. When you have finished your exam, read your answers again. Correct(改正) the mistakes if there are any and make sure you have not missed anything out.

I was feeling a little blue because my mother had lost her job.
One day, while I was on the street, I heard the piano music and singing rising above the noise of the people. I walked more slowly to where it was coming from. Then I saw a young lady sitting at a piano.
She was singing songs about love, yourself and keeping on trying. The way she was singing made me a little comfortable. I stood there ,watching her playing on such a crowded New York square. I thought that she must be enough to perform in front of so many people.
She noticed me. I walked over and told her how good her sounded. “Thank you.” she said.
“I have been going through a hard time recently, you’ve made me hopeful again.” I said to her.
“I’m glad that I could help,” she replied, “Why are you so ?”
“Well, my mom has lost her job, and I’m not sure what to do …”
“Did you noticed the you were walking? Your head was down.” she said. “Don’t be upset, because comes in different ways and if your head is down, you might not see it. You should more… lift your head up.”
I looked her, amazed at how she was encouraging me. “ are you playing the piano here?” I asked her with a smile.
She that she saw a lot of unhappy people in the world and she tried to cheer up by playing music.
I smiled a little wilder, realizing that no difficulties could stop me from going on.
