I found out that sometimes doing someone a favor could get you into a lot of trouble. I was in the eighth grade at the time, and we were having a final test. During the test, the girl sitting next to me said something to me, but I didn’t understand. So I got closer to her and found out that she was trying to ask me if I had an extra pen. She showed me that hers could not write. I happened to have an extra one, so I took it out of my pocket and put it on her desk.
Later, after the test paper had been turned in, the teacher asked me to stay in the classroom when all the other students were out. Then she began to talk to me about honesty and emphasized(重点强调) the fact that when people do something dishonest, they are really cheating themselves. She made me promise that I would think seriously about all the things she had said, and then she told me I could leave. I walked out of the room wondering why she had talked to me about all those things.
The next day, I realized that the teacher thought I had cheated on the test. When she saw me talk to the girl next to me, it looked as if I was copying answers from the girl’s test paper. I tried to explain about the pen, but she said it seemed very strange to her that I hadn’t talked of anything about the pen when she talked to me after the test. She continued to believe that I had cheated on the test.

Because earthquakes happen without warning, it’s important to take steps now to prepare. Because you don’t know where you will be when an earthquake happens, prepare some supplies(急需品) for your home, work place, and car.
1.Water
A person needs at least 1/2 gallon(加仑,容量单位) of water daily just for drinking. Store at least 1 gallon of water per(每一个) person per day and be prepared for a 72 hour period. It is suggested that you buy bottled water. Keep bottled water in its original container(容器) and do not open it until you need to use it. Also, do check the “use by” date.
2.Food
It’s always a practical idea to keep a supply of non perishable(不易腐烂的) food on hand. Have an enough supply of canned(灌装的) food, powdered milk(奶粉), dried fruits, non salted nuts and canned juices for at least 72 hours.
3.Flashlights(手电筒) and spare batteries(备用电池)
Keep a flashlight beside your bed, at your place of work, and in your car. Do not use matches or candles after an earthquake until you are sure that no gas leaks(泄漏).
Prepare a battery powered(装电池的) radio and spare batteries. Most telephones will be out of order(发生故障), so radios will be your best source of information.
4.Clothes
If you live in a cold place, you must think about warmth. You might not have heat after an earthquake. Think about your clothing and bedding supplies.

Daniel Olin was 11 years old when his parents moved to Canada. He liked his new school and made friends there, but then things at home started to change. His mum and dad began to argue and the arguments got worse and worse until one day, Daniel's mum left. With his father working long hours, Daniel felt very lonely and very unhappy. He wanted to escape, to run away. And that's what he did.
Very early one terribly cold morning when the snow was deep on the ground, he packed a bag with some clothes, some chocolate and a map of Canada and set off to a forest. He ran and ran until he could hardly breathe. His feet were heavy with the snow but he still walked on through deep snow, not even watching where he was going.
Then, disaster struck. A rock hidden by the deep snow caught his feet and Daniel fell to the ground. He had broken the bone. He was very cold and was starting to feel tired, but he knew that if he fell asleep in the snow, he would certainly die from the cold.
A tree shook ahead. From within the branches(树枝), a pair of yellow eyes watched Daniel. The puma had been following him. A puma is a large wild cat with claws that could tear(撕开) Daniel into pieces. But instead of moving in for the kill, the puma walked up to Daniel and lay across his chest, arms and legs. Daniel was too frightened to move, but soon the warmth of the animal reached Daniel and he began to feel better. From time to time, the puma pressed his muzzle (口鼻) against Daniel and rocked his head gently. Clearly, the puma knew that Daniel must not fall asleep. This animal should have been a real danger to Daniel and yet the boy began to feel safe.

No one knows exactly how many disabled people there are in the world, but the number may be over 450 million. The number of disabled people in India alone is probably more than double the total population of Canada.
In the United Kingdom, about one in ten people have some disability. Disability is not just something that happens to other people. As we get older, many of us will become less mobile (可动的) , hard of hearing or have failing eyesight.
Disablement can take many forms and happen at any time of life. Some people are born with disabilities. Many others become disabled as they get older. There are many progressive disabling diseases. The longer time goes on, the worse they become. Some people are disabled in accidents. Many others may have disability in the form of a mental illness. All are affected by people’s attitude(态度) towards them.
Disabled people face many physical barriers(障碍). Next time you go shopping or to work or visit friends, imagine what would you do if you could not get up steps, or on to buses and trains. What would you do if you could not see where you were going or could not hear the traffic? But there are other barriers: prejudice(偏见)can be even harder to break down and ignorance (无知) represents by far the greatest barrier of all. It is almost impossible for the able-bodied to fully understand what the disabled go through, so it is important to draw attention to these barriers and show that it is the individual person(个人) and their ability, not their disability, which counts. The first paragraph points out that ___________.
A.it is possible to get an exact number of the world’s disabled people |
B.there are many disabled people in the world |
C.the number of disabled people in India is the greatest |
D.India has not much more disabled people than Canada |

Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?
A.There are about 10 percent disabled persons in the UK. |
B.The whole society should pay more attention to the barriers faced by the disabled people. |
C.Even the able-bodied may lose some of their body functions when they get older. |
D.There is still prejudice against the disabled which results mainly from ignorance. |
It can be concluded(推断)from the passage that ___________.
A.we should try our best to prevent disablement |
B.we must take a proper attitude towards the disabled |
C.the able-bodied people will never fully understand the disabled |
D.both physical and mental barriers are hard to break down |
