You may know the English letters A, B and C. But do you know there are people called ABC? You may like eating bananas. But did you know there is such a thing as a “banana person”? How strange! Are these people from “another earth” ? No. They are just Chinese people like you and me.
ABC means American-born-Chinese. An ABC is a Chinese, but was born in the United States. Sometimes, people call an ABC a “banana person”. A banana is yellow outside and white inside. So, when a person is a banana, he or she is white inside---hinting like a Westerner(西方人) and yellow outside --- looking like a Chinese.
Do you know why? Usually, ABCs know little about China or the Chinese language. Some of them don’t speak Chinese. Also, they are not interested in Chinese politics(政治), But if ABCs can’t speak Chinese, can we still call them Chinese people? Yes, of course. They are Chinese. They are oversea Chinese. These people may be citizens(公民) of another country like the US, Canada or Singapore. But they have Chinese blood. Their parents, grandparents or even great-grandparents were from China. They all have black eyes and black hair. But they are not Chinese citizens. They are not people of the People’s Republic of China. For example, we all know the famous scientist C.N. Yang(杨振宁). He got the Nobel Prize Physics in 1957. Chinese people love him. But he is an American citizen. “ABC” in this passage stands for “_______”.

How can you help young children become interested in reading? The following are some important tips.
The first way is to read out loud to them. Even if it’s just 15 minutes a day, as long as the children listen every day, they can become interested in reading later.
Cooking with young children can be also helpful. By reading the menu and cooking ingredients(原料) with them, you can help them learn more words and expressions.
When young children are reading, tell them to mark(做记号) the words that they don’t know and then to look them up in a dictionary. Also, tell them to ask questions about what they ‘re reading. For older children, try to make them pay more attention to the theme(主题)of the passage or ask them to write a summary(概要)Finally, make sure there are enough reading materials for young children. If you don’t have enough, go to the local library. Help young children find out which writers they like and what kind of books they like. Help them to choose the right books to read. But be sure to allow them to choose what they like by themselves. How many pieces of advice are given in the passage?

I read an article about people living in e-age yesterday. It talks about different ways of communicating like chatting on line, sending e-mails, sending different kinds of messages and keeping an online diary.
The article says that people nowadays send e-mails at least once a day. I don’t agree with this because I send e-mail only twice a week. However, I do check my e-mail once a day. I like receiving e-mails.
About chatting online, the article says that chatting on line is becoming more and more popular among teenagers. I think this is true. Whenever I arrive at home, I turn on my computer and log on(登录) to chat online with my friends. I prefer chatting online to calling a friend, because I can chat with many friends at the same time.
But I like using mobile phones. When I do not have my computer with me I can send short massages to my friends. I also like keeping in touch with them in this way.
I keep an online diary four times a week. I like telling others what has happened to me.
I think I am one of the people living in the e-age. I can live without computers or mobile phones.
