Learning disabilities are problems that affect the brain’s ability to receive, process, analyze, or store information. The most common and best-known verbal learning disability is dyslexia(诵读困难), which causes people to have trouble recognizing or processing letters and the sounds associated with them. Learning disabilities make up at least 10 percent of the population at present.

People with learning disabilities have average or above-average intelligence, but their difficulties in managing the information their brains receive hold them back in school and at work, causing problems with self-esteem(自尊). One of the most painful aspects of having a learning disability is to have your brain’s inability to process information in certain ways mistaken for low intelligence. The disability usually only affects certain limited areas of a child’s development. In fact, rarely are learning disabilities severe enough to influence a person’s potential to live a happy, normal life.

Causes of learning disabilities are various. Environmental factors, complications during pregnancy, genetic influences, CNS(Central Nervous System) infections are all possible factors. Signs of learning disabilities may vary from person to person. Some have difficulty in speaking, spelling, listening or understanding; some can’t recognize words previously learned and others may have problems with math, direct attention or physical coordination(协调).

Diagnosis(诊断)includes intellectual, educational, speech and language, medical, and psychological evaluations. The important thing is to follow up on any concerns, whether you notice something wrong at home or a teacher raises a red flag. A specialist in learning disabilities may not be as knowledgeable about other conditions that may contribute to learning difficulties. For the diagnosis of learning difficulties, IQ test can be taken which will give the results of learning disabilities. The specialist will test sensory disorders that can lead to learning problems.

The good news about learning disabilities is that while they’re permanent, they’re also treatable. Learning disabilities fall within the class of Neurological(神经学的)issues called developmental disabilities, in which they limit success in one or more major life areas, and they can’t be reversed(彻底转变)by meditation. Among these sources are doctors, special education, teachers and mental health professionals who can help identify learning disabilities and recommend the right combination of medical, psychological, and educational treatment.

Laughter and tears are part of living. But do you find enough time for laughter? I am not
asking if you experience lots of good times. Of course we should laugh during the happy times.
1
Erma Bombeck is known for her humorous books, but she wrote one that covered a more
serious topic: cancer in children. Erma talks with lots of children with cancer and learns an important life lesson from them. 2
She tells the experience of 15-year-old Jessica from Burlington, VT. Jessica’s leg was amputated (锯掉) at the knee because of cancer. Jessica tells about playing soccer. She kicked the ball hard and it flew off in one direction while her artificial leg flew another way. Then “the tall, pretty person that I am,” she said, “sat on the floor in laughter.”
Jessica may not have laughed about her cancer, but she laughed about dealing with its results. 3
Then there is the story of 17-year-old Betsy. She made her way to the radiation room(放射室) for
her regular radiation therapy. As usual, she dropped her hospital coat and, wearing only her birthday suit, climbed onto the table and waited. After a couple of moments she began to realize something disturbing: the extra people in the room were not the medical students she had thought, but rather painters giving an estimate on painting! 4And like Jessica, her ability to laugh helped her to deal with one of the most difficult things a young person can endure(忍受) — cancer.
There is a time to weep and a time to laugh. 5And you’ll smile at the end.

A.She was learning to wear an artificial leg.
B.And her laughter helped her cope.

3.

One of the things that can contribute to lack of motivation is doing the same things every day and getting stuck into it without knowing where you are heading. Do not be afraid to take risks, explore new ways of achieving your goals and get out of your comfort zone at times to discover new things around you and take advantage of new opportunities in life.
