I had never noticed her. She was not the kind of girl who could draw attention. She was not tall and just looked      . In class, she liked sitting at the back, reading or taking notes. One day I asked her to read aloud the text. When I heard her standard American pronunciation, I looked at her with new eyes. And I      her name—Kelly. Later on, the National College Speech Competition would be held. One student in our school was allowed to attend. I thought it over and filled in       name.
Kelly practiced hard for the competition. However, I was a little worried because she was always too       . Could she do well in the competition?
On the night of the competition, I sat in the front row of the hall very early. I told her to take it easy. Her face turned red and she said nothing. It seemed she was really       . I felt upset, but I just patted her on the shoulder and let her go to draw lots(抽签). As a result, she drew No. 9 while No. 8 was a boy who was very good at giving speeches.
Sure enough, No. 8 was very       . The whole audience made a warm applause (鼓掌)almost every 30 seconds and was still talking about his speech with      until Kelly appeared on the stage. I sat there with no      to look at her. It was her first time to go up the stage, so I couldn’t be angry with her for any small mistakes. But at that moment, I found I was so afraid of her      .
The strong spotlight and large hall made her so small that nobody seemed to notice she had been on the stage. I felt hopeless.
But the moment that       me came. I clearly heard a voice, a very loud voice, “Now, please focus on(聚焦于)me.”
Three times in all, louder and louder.
The whole audience fell silent.
I could           believe that loud voice came from the girl, who was usually soft-voiced and didn’t        attention at all. She gave a perfect speech.
I think I will never forget this touching lesson that my student taught me — never underestimate(低估)the power of the silent people.

Small talk is a good way to kill time and make friends. If you travel to other countries, do you know what to say to small talk with local people?
In Britain the best topic is the weather. British changes quite often. It’s a safe topic. You can start small talk simply by saying “It’s a lovely day today, isn’t it?”the weather, it’s good to talk about gardens with English people. For example, you could say, “Those roses look really beautiful, ?” English people love their pets. So it’s also nice to begin with “What a lovely ! What’s its name?”
In America, people like to talk about sports, Amecican football and basketball. They also talk about clothes by saying “It’s a nice shirt! Where did you get it?” The weather is a topic there, too.
Of course, you should avoid a lot of topics during small talk in western countries. Don’t ask people “How old are you?”. Age is usually secret , for women. ask “How much money do you make?” It makes people uncomfortable. Don’t ask strangers whether they have a girlfriend boyfriend. Politics(政治) and religion(宗教) is not a good topic for two people who have just met, either.

What’s more, service on the train was also very poor. The trip took more than five hours. However, we could buybut some soft drinks on the train. Worst of all, something waswith the air conditioning(空调) and the temperature reached 38℃ before we arrived in Stenberg.
All theon the train were so angry that they asked me to write this letter to your company. We hope you can give us some explanations and improve your work later.

Once I went shopping on my first visit to Macao. Coming from cold and cloudy England, I enjoyed the sun and dressed in a T-shirt and a skirt. Not having much to enjoy the sun in England, my legs were very white. In England this is not a fashionable look at all . Most women spend every sunny day out trying to get darker skin. The darker the skin, the better the look. I have tried to get darker but works for me!
As I one shop, the two shop assistants kept looking at my legs the whole time , talking quietly to each other in Chinese. I began to feel uncomfortable and asked my friend we could leave. After we left the shop, she asked me what was wrong. I complained about the shop assistants being very impolite . They be talking about my white skin. My friend laughed. “They weren’t laughing at you. They were saying how nice your legs are. Many Chinese women want to have white skin like yours. , there are many beauty products in the shops to make skin whiter and a lot of money is spent on them.”
It just shows that we are never happy with what we have. The grass is greener on the other side. If the women of the West and East the same way, Western women wouldn’t spend so much money on cream that makes skin darker and women from the wouldn’t need to use cream that makes skin whiter.
