I can still remember the first day when I met my best friend. I hid behind my mother and she hid behind her grandmother, 36 to look at each other. But we soon lost the 37 and started playing with each other. In the 7th grade, I first lost touch with her. She was going through family problems and I deserted her to be with the “cooler people”. 38 of my new friends liked her as much as I did because they knew she had “problems”. However, every summer we would 39 sit at each other’s home and watch soap operas and talk about everything we liked.
It was last year when I noticed the problem. I guess I was just too busy in high school to realize she needed someone there for her. Well, she made a new “best friend” and 40 did I. Then I didn’t know why, but she started cutting herself.
She was diagnosed with clinical depression(抑郁症). I was very 41_ at first, but with the late night calls, we still stayed in touch. I wanted to be there for her since her new best friend 42 deserted her. When people were calling her 43 , I knew I still 44 her like a sister.
Yesterday she came 45 me and said this,” I never knew what a best friend was 46 I found you were the only person that would stop me from cutting, the only person that ever made me feel better about myself and my 47 . You don’t know this but I was trying to kill myself one night when you 48 me. I owe you so much, and you didn’t even know you were 49 me.” We both cried. And I guess a kind of lesson from my life so far is to never 50 your friends.

Several years ago I studied in a university in the biggest city in our country. It’s very beautiful, I could read lots of books there and I made lots of friends there. But it’s hot in 11 . So I usually returned to my hometown when my 12 began. It is not big, but it’s cool and quiet. I could 13 in the daytime and have a good sleep at night.
One day I had some problems to solve. But I didn’t take the 14 home. My father told me Charlie, one of my 15 , had a good library. I went to his house at once. We didn’t see each other after I 16 my middle school. At first he didn’t 17 me. He looked me up and down. And then he called out, “Oh, dear! It’s you, Fred! I haven’t seen you for a long time!”
Of course we were 18 to meet each other again and talked a lot about our schoolmates and 19 . We also talked about the interesting things at that time. Later on he showed me around his 20 . It wasn’t big but there were a lot of nice books in it. And the dictionaries I 21 were in it too. At last I said, “Can you 22 some dictionaries to me, please?”
“I’m sorry I don’t lend any books to others,” said the young man.
“Are you afraid I’ll 23 them?”
“No, I’m not. I’m afraid you won’t 24 them to me. Look! All the books in my library are not 25 , but borrowed!”

When you’re a preteen, a huge problem might be that you just have to have a new rock-rap CD, 1 your parents won’t give you the money for it. I thought life was so 2 when things like this happened-----until September 11, 2001.
I was in P.E. when the planes hit the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon. As soon as I got home and for weeks before, I saw the disaster 3 on TV. Seeing the innocent people running for their 4 as the debris(瓦砾) started coming down the fire and smoke rose out of the 5 brought tears to my eyes. I couldn’t help imagining what the people on the 6 and in the buildings were thinking and going through, not 7 what was going on. I admired the courage of the firefighters who rushed in and risked their own lives to 8 others. It tore my heart apart to watch the 9 looks on the faces of so many people who didn’t know if their loved ones were dead or alive while 10 in all the debris.
Then it 11 me: All my life I had thought mainly of myself. I had it easy in life and had been taking it all for granted.
A feeling of coldness 12 down my back, and I cried just thinking of the possibility that it could have easily 13 to my family. My mom or dad could have been killed like that, and I would never, ever see them again. I began to evaluate what a real 14 in life was.
This disaster 15 me that awful things can happen to anyone at any time. Now when my mom or dad or sister go somewhere, even if it’s just 16 the store, I try to remember to tell them that I love them because I know there is a 17 that I may never tell them that 18 .
Not getting a new CD is not going to 19 my life. I can live with those kinds of problems. But losing someone I love would 20 make my life miserable.
9/11 showed me just what I am.

My name is Scott and I am 36 years old. I have spent most of my adult life doing an 41 job, so I had a very cynical (愤世嫉俗的) view of life and the world around me. I saw no point in trying to 42 my life or the lives of the people around me.
Two years ago my wife 43 me to return to school and work toward a career where I would find satisfaction. So I entered Long Beach City College to pursue a 44in history. Last term I took a political science class. The 45 Dr. Rock had such a great effect on me. He 46in the Air Force, worked in the U.S. nuclear program and served in the White House. When I asked another instructor 47 someone who was so overqualified worked at a small community college, she 48 told me because he wanted to.
This 49 me, so I asked Dr. Rock himself why he did not pursue a better role in his career. What he told me has changed my 50 forever. He told me that by working at the college he would be able to 51 the kinds of students he believed would make a 52in the world. He said that 53 the right motivation and support, the students he taught could become the future leaders of our country. He said that he preferred the inner city 54 because the students there showed the 55 promise and cared deeply for their education.
Dr. Rock paid attention to the needs of the community. He taught me how to care and 56 us to take part in our community in any way we 57 .
I thought that I was the 58 one that was affected by his lessons, but at the end of the term I found that the entire class had felt the same 59 that came over me. Dr. Rock taught us how to60 our country, our community and ourselves.
