Jenny Gonzalez is excited to go to school these days. The 13-year-old from South Gate Middle School in Los Angeles, US, is taking care of three green abalones(鲍鱼)at school.
The students of Violeta Llamas’ science class, including Jenny, have caredfor the sea animals since January. The class formed eight t．Each team takes turns to care for the abalones．Team five—Jenny, Alexis Diaz, Jennifer Gonzalez and Ricardo Beltran—have now got their t．
The abalones are kin a box of seawater. Every day Alexis, 12, checks if the water has too much salt．Too much salt is bfor the health of abalones．Jenny makes fresh saltwater．
Then the four students work together to clean uthe waste in the box and feed the abalones．
“Sea life is l a baby. You have to clean them and care for them. ”Jennifer said.
Nancy Caruso, a scientist, leads the project. She said the number of green abalones along the state’s coast is going down because people have ctoo many of them．She said pthe sea is now the duty of the next generation(一代人)—young students．
“The students love taking care of the abalones.” said Llamas．
“This could open the door for those who want to be a sea life scientist oan environment protector” she said.
The stime with the abalones will end this school year. Caruso and a team of volunteers will record the abalones and then send them into the sea．

It is true that people with better education are usually able to get better paying jobs. In other words, they have more chances to choose a good job while people with little or no education don’t. It seems that the purpose of education is to make people get jobs. But this isn’t accepted by all people.
Some people may think that a person should spend the best years of his life to get education only for a way of living. This was probably one of the earliest reasons of education. In fact, if education is just a way of making a living, people don’t need to spend so much time in school. People can get education for a living in a short time. Subjects like history and geography need not be taught to everyone. Even language and maths need not be taught in detail, either. Here it is clear that education is much more than teaching a man to get a way of living.
Education is well-rounded and it is mainly for improving a man. It is not only to teach him to speak, read and write, but also to develop his creative thinking and other abilities. After that, it is to make him a wise man and thankfully enjoy the achievements of human. Educationis to make a man lead a better life. Educated people are expected to be able to listen to good music, read good books, watch plays and take an interest in the world.
I would agree that making a good living is an important reason for education, but certainly not the most important or the main reason.

Several weeks ago, our headmaster, Mr. Gaudi, told us that our school had been chosen to compete on Smart Aleck—a game show which my best friend Carla and I love. Carla has a good imagination, and I know a lot of history, so we thought we’d be good for the team.
A few days later, Mr. Gaudi held a meeting with everyone interested in the . He told us that Smart Aleck uses a five-member team. He also said that three more people would be needed as backup(替补). , four times that many students were at the meeting. So Mr. Gaudi said we would have a and the top eight scorers(得分者) would become the team and the backup. Everybody agreed that this was a way to decide.
Yesterday, all of the hopefuls went to the dining hall after school. We would have to decide the starting line-up(阵容). Mr. Gaudi acted as the host. After a few hours, all the on the team were chosen except one. Carla and I tied(打成平手) for that last position. We had to hold a one-on-one competition the two of us. The winner would be on the team and the loser would be the backup.
Midway through our two-person competition, I was starting to pull ahead(领先). I saw the look on Carla's face. I waited for a second and knew what I had to do. As much as I wanted to be on Smart Aleck, Carla wanted even more. So, starting with my next question, I held back and let Carla , just by a little bit. She felt sorry for my not being on the team as she she would be on the show. And since I will go as backup, I’ll still have the fun of the show up close.
Was I cheating(欺骗) by not trying as hard as I could? I don’t think so. No one noticed, and Carla and I didn’t it. It won’t hurt the team Carla will be a very good competitor on the real show. I think that making my best friend happy was the right thing to do.
