Many young people all over the world love to travel and see the world. Have you heard of backpackers? They are normally young people who travel cheaply with just one bag and comfortable walking boots. They buy local food in supermarkets to save money and at the same time become friends with local people.
Some people prefer adventure tours. Brave people may try bungee(蹦极) jumping from the bridge overlooking the Victoria Falls in Africa with only a rope around their legs. Some enjoy the challenge of rock climbing in the Alps in Switzerland. Others may go ice skiing in the Rocky Mountains in the USA.
Have you ever heard of an ecotourism (生态旅游)? It means a holiday in which people come close to nature but are very careful not to destroy the nature beauty or living things in the area. How can this be possible? Let's read an interview with people who enjoyed a swimming with dolphins tour.
Interviewer what was the most exciting part of your holiday?
Sharon from South Africa I felt excited when I heard the sound of wild dolphins beside me in the water and then swimming directly under me. An image I will never forget.
Xavier from Portugal There were two dolphins below us swimming downwards. One stopped and looked back at me as if to say “What are those strange things?” Fantastic!
Interviewer Did you feel that your holiday helped local people and areas to keep their beautiful environment?
Jane from New Zealand The hotel and the whale and dolphin watching companies hire local people. They used to hunt those whales and dolphins, but now they can earn money from tourism and mustn’t kill whales and dolphins. Not many boats are used at the same time so these animals aren't disturbed. The boat companies also work to educate the local schools about the importance of protecting these wonderful animals.
Helen from England I am glad they are not killing the whales and dolphins any more, but the cars and boats use fuel(燃料) which could cause pollution and make the sea dirtier.
Well, what do you think? Thousands of people visit the Forbidden City or the Great Wall of China every year. Playgrounds offer kids fresh air, friends, and exercise. However, each year, more than 200,000 kids go to hospital because they are hurt in one way or another when playing on the playground. So what can we do to improve the situation?
We should make sure the playground is safe for the children. It should be soft and thick enough, so when the children fall, they won’t hurt too much. Things like water, rocks or broken glass might cause danger to the kids. Cleaners should check the playground from time to time and clear away these dangerous things. In fact, children themselves also need to help keep the playground clean and safe. That means each time after playing they should pick up the rubbish they’ve produced. If someone finds there is something wrong with the equipment(设施), he should report to the keeper of the playground, so people will come to fix it.
Teaching kids how to play safely is also very important. If they know the rules of the playground, they won’t get hurt easily. For example, they should never push when others are on seesaws or swings. If someone is going to jump off some equipment, he should first look down to make sure no other kids are in the way. Of course, wearing right clothes may also help to keep safe. Clothes with strings (绳) can get caught on equipment which may hurt the kid badly.
In short, our kids can both enjoy themselves and be safe if we are working together to improve the situation.Do many kids get hurt while playing on the playground every year?
What things might cause danger to the kids on the playground?
Why should we teach kids how to play safely on the playground?
Who need to work together to improve the situation ofthe playground?

In 1938, a fishing boat off the coast of Africa pulled up its nets. One net held a very strange fish, five feet long and bright blue. Strangest of all, it had fins (鳍) that looked like legs!
In the nets, only this fish stayed alive for several hours. Before the fish began to rot (腐烂 ), a young woman made a drawing of it. She sent her drawing to a scientist on sea life, Professor J. B. Smith.
Upon seeing her drawing of the fish, Smith couldn’t believe his eyes. Could it be true? It just didn’t seem possible, but there it was. It could be only one thing, a coelacanth, a fish people believe having died out(灭绝)fifty million years ago. How could the fish be swimming about only a few days before?
If we found one, there must be others. The professor put up posters offering a reward for catching such a fish. Other scientists laughed at Smith. They thought the search was a waste of time. Years passed. It seemed the other scientists were right. But Smith never gave up hope. One day, fourteen years later, the professor received a telegram. Afish had been caught that looked like the one in the poster. Would the scientist fly to the region and check the fish? Smith did.
With shaking fingers the professor raised the cloth around the fish. It was exactly like the one in the young woman’s drawing. It was a coelacanth,a missing link(关联)with the past!
After the discovery of the coelacanth, scientists began to wonder. Is it possible that an even stranger creature(生物)will someday be discovered?Which is TRUE about the first coelacanth in the passage?
A.It had four legs. | B.It was bright blue. |
C.It was six feet long. | D.It died when caught. |
What is the best title for this passage?
A.A strange creature |
B.A serious professor |
C.The discovery of the coelacanth |
D.A missing link with the past |
What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Scientists didn’t believe the discovery of the coelacanth. |
B.Scientists are working hard to find more coelacanths. |
C.Scientists may find even stranger creatures someday. |
D.Scientists are doing research on the coelacanth. |
The weather was perfect. We were just out for a picnic. When lunch time came, we decided to go and get something to eat, and meet back on the grass.
Susan and I headed for a hot dog stand (摊) . We watched the seller put together the hot dog. But when Susan took out her money, the man surprised us. "It looks a little overdone," he said, "so you don’t have to pay me. " We said our thanks, joined our friends, and began to enjoy our food. But as we talked and ate, I noticed a man sitting alone, in dirty clothes. I could tell that he hadn’t had a bath for days. Another homeless person, I thought.
We finished eating but when Susan and I went to throw away the lunch bag, I heard a voice ask, "there isn’t any food in that bag, is there?"
It was the homeless man. I didn’t know what to say. "No, I ate it already. " "Oh, really? " was his only answer. He was obviously very hungry.
I felt bad for him, but I didn’t know what to do. Suddenly Susan said, "I’ll be right back. Please wait for me a minute. " I watched curiously (好奇地) as she went across to the hot dog stand. Then I realized what she was doing. She bought a hot dog, crossed back, and gave the man the food.
When she came back to us, Susan said simply, "I was just passing on the kindness that someone gave to me. "
That day I learned how generosity can go farther than the person you give to. By giving, you teach others how to give also. You never know what happiness a simple act of care will bring. The correct order of the following things is ________.
a. Susan bought a hot dog for the man.
b. We went for a picnic.
c. We met a hungry man.
d. We had the hot dog for free.

The underlined word "generosity" means_____________.
A.the fact of being happy |
B.the feeling of pity for others |
C.the idea of loving each other |
D.the act of giving |
What does the writer want to tell us by telling us the story?
A.Few people don’t know that a simple act of care will bring a lot of happiness. |
B.A simple act of care will bring more happiness than you can imagine. |
C.People know how much happiness a simple act of care will bring. |
D.A simple act of care will never bring us any happiness. |
