Going to a friend’s house is very exciting. You may spend time with a friend and get to see where he lives. So remember to be polite.
When to arrive: The first thing to remember is that when a friend invites you over, you need to arrive on time. If your friend tells you to come “around 3:00”, that means you can turn up a little bit after 3:00. But usually it is a good idea to arrive at the right time.
What to bring: Often it is also nice to bring something to your friend’s house. This could be a box of chocolates for you two to share, or maybe a movie that you can watch together. You can also bring some flowers. A little present is a nice way to show your friend that you are excited to be at his house.
How to greet: When you visit your friend’s house, you may also meet his parents. You should tell them who you are and they may tell you their names. As a child, I went to visit my friend Paul. I called his parents by their first names John and Mary. But now I know it is more polite to call them Mr. or Mrs. Smith. This will show them more respect(尊重) and then they may tell you to call them by their first names. Another way to show respect is to call them Madam or Sir.
It is a cool thing to visit a friend’s house. Be polite to your friend and your friend’s parents, and you will be invited again! If you are told to get to your friend’s house around 5:00 p.m., it is polite to arrive at _____ p.m..

Years ago, I lived in a building in a large city. The next building only was a few feet away from mine. There was a woman lived there, and I had never met her, yet I could see she sat by her window each afternoon, sewing or reading.
After several months had gone by, I began to notice that her window was dirty. Everything was unclear through the dirty window. I would say to myself. “I wonder why that woman doesn’t wash her window. It really looks terrible.”
One bright morning I decided to clean my flat, including washing the window on the inside.
Later in the afternoon when I finished the cleaning, I sat down by the window with a cup of coffee for a rest. What a surprise! Across the way, the woman sitting by her window was clearly visible (看见). Her window was clean!
Then it dawned on me. I had been criticizing (批评) her dirty window, but all the time I was watching hers through my own dirty window.
That was quite an important lesson for me. How often had I looked at and criticized others through the dirty window of my heart, through my own shortcomings?
Since then, whenever I wanted to judge (评判) someone, I asked myself first, “Am I looking at him through my own dirty window?” I try to clean the window of my own world so that I may see the world about me more clearly. The writer couldn’t see everything clearly through the window because __________.
A.the woman’s window was dirty |
B.the writer’s window was dirty |
C.the woman lived nearby |
D.the writer was near-sighted |
The writer was surprised that _________.
A.the woman was sitting by her window |
B.the woman’s window was still terrible |
C.the woman did cleaning in the afternoon |
D.the woman’s window was clean |
“It dawned on me” probably means “_______”.
A.I began to understand it | B.it cheered me up |
C.I knew it grew light | D.it began to get dark |
It’s clear that ________.
A.the writer had never met the woman before |
B.the writer often washed the window |
C.they both worked as cleaners |
D.they lived in a small town |
From the passage, we can learn _______.
A.one shouldn’t criticize others very often |
B.one should often make his windows clean |
C.one must judge himself before he judges others |
D.one must look at others through his dirty windows. |

Dear Peter,
Did you have a good time last summer?I did. I took a trip to Seattle with my brotherHenry. It took us two and a half hours to drive to Seattle from my home. We stayed in a big hotel near the beautiful beach. On the first day, we just stayed in the hotel and watched TV. On the second day, we wen tto a supermarket and bought our favorite things. There were lots of people there. I bought a T-shirt and a sweater. They were both white because I looked very cool in white. Henry bought a green backpack, and he liked green best. On the third day, we went to a zoo and saw many cute animals. I liked the pandas and koalas best. And I took many photos of them.
