Environmental pollution is the biggest problem for human being today. We all know that the environment includes the earth, water, plants and animals. If they are polluted or hurt, oour life can also be harmed.
It is true that more and more trees are being cutting down. The earth is becoming warmer. If the problem continues, the world will become a desert, and people will have no place to live.
The smoke produced by cars, factories and homes is polluting the air. Poisonous gas is letting off into the air , too. The polluted air make people sick.
Then there is the sound pollution. Our world is not quiet, even at night, because of the noise made by cars and people’s daily life. Too much noise has a bad influence on our hearing. It has been reported that many people in a village near an airport have lost their hearing because of the noise made by planes.
The water and the earth we are living on have also been polluted. The rubbish people throw away and the waste water poured by factories make the water and the soil polluted. When we drink dirty water or eat crops planted on polluted soil, we can get sick easily.
Just imagine what will happen if this continues. I ‘m sure it won’t be a pleasant result. What does the underlined word mean in Chinese?

In the most southern part of our planet, there’s a place that’s covered with snow and ice all year round. But it has the clearest and cleanest air. Amazingly, in this place, the sun sometimes hangs even in the midnight sky. This place is Antarctica (南极洲): the coldest, windiest and harshest (恶劣的) place on the Earth.
As the world’s least-known place, Antarctica is of great interest to scientists around the world. In 1983, China joined the Antarctic Treaty (《南极条约》). The treaty made Antarctica a peaceful place for member countries to do scientific research. During 30 years, China has sent many scientists to Antarctica. They mostly look at the resources under the icy land and do research about climate change and marine (海洋的) biology.
Antarctica is a place with fantastic views. However, life there is very hard. Food is one of the biggest problems. Frozen food which can be heated easily is people’s daily food. Fresh vegetables are hard to grow in the cold weather. Therefore, scientists often eat dried or canned vegetables.
Sleep is also troublesome. In Antarctica, summer lasts from November to March. During this period, Antarctica points to the sun and receives sunlight 24 hours a day. In order to get some sleep, scientists cover the windows with black plastic cloth to create “night”.
Working in Antarctica is dangerous, especially when meeting gale-force(七级以上的)winds.Sometimes the wind is even stronger than a typhoon. It can easily blow people away.So there are ropes that connect buildings of some research stations.People can hold these ropes to keep their balance in forceful winds.
What’s more, communicating with others is difficult. Without cables and Internet in some research stations, two-way radios are the only tools to communicate. If people want to say hello to friends and relatives, they can use satellite phones.
Although it is challenging(挑战) to work in Antarctica, scientists’ passion to learn about this mysterious land will never end. It is hopeful that one day they will step every corner of this icy land.Scientists from China go to Antarctica to _____.
A.find out ways to control water pollution |
B.research climate change and marine biology |
C.grow plants and vegetables in special condition |
D.stop the hunters from killing the marine biology |
In order to sleep well in Antarctica, the scientists have to _____.
A.wear more clothes to keep warm | B.cover the windows with black cloth |
C.connect research stations with ropes | D.eat more fried and canned vegetables |
We can replace (替换) the underlined word passion in the last paragraph with .

The mystery stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle are famous all over the world.
The detective in his stories is called Sherlock Holmes. He solves mysteries in a most surprising way. His assistant, Dr Watson, watches with admiration and then writes up the story of the mystery afterwards.
This is a useful story writing skill. Because Watson is not very clever, the story remains a mystery until the end. The readers can sometimes pick up some clues before he does! Then, to make Watson understand the mystery, Holmes has to explain it all, step by step. So we, the readers, get to see it step by step too. Watson is almost as good a character in the story as Sherlock Holmes!
The very first time they meet, Holmes greatly surprises Watson. When they are first introduced, Holmes says to Watson, ‘How do you do? I see you have been to Afghanistan(阿富汗).’
Watson is too amazed by this to ask Holmes how he knows this. Watson has, indeed, been to Afghanistan. Later, he asks Holmes about it. Holmes explains that there is nothing magical about what he does. He gets to know it all by very, very careful observation(观察).
Observation One
Watson was introduced to Holmes as a doctor. Yet Holmes thought that the way he stood and walked made him seem like a soldier. So, this meant he was probably an army doctor.
Observation Two
Watson's face was quite dark skinned. But his wrists were pale. So his dark face was probably sun burnt. This meant that he had been to a hot, sunny country.
Observation Three
At the time, the British army had soldiers at bases in many parts of the world. So there were still a lot of places to choose from. However, Holmes saw that Watson looked very tired and he was always holding his left arm, as if it was painful. So, he had probably been with the army to a place where they were fighting. There was only one place where the British army was fighting at that time: Afghanistan. The writer most probably created the character, Dr Watson, to ______.
A.give Holmes help when solving mysteries |
B.show Holmes' careful observation |
C.help readers pick up some clues about the mystery |
D.get readers to see the mystery step by step |
The first time they meet, ______.
A.Holmes explains how he knows Watson has been to Afghanistan |
B.Holmes surprises Watson by telling that he has been to Afghanistan |
