Singles Day (光棍节)falls on every November 11th, and as the name suggests, this holiday is one specially for people who are still living the single life. It’s surprising that China is the only country in the world that has set up a special day for singles to celebrate(庆祝) their lives. To find out more about this celebration, read on.
An old story goes that once there were four single men, leading very boring lives. None of them were married(结婚), or had lovers, or did anything exciting. They just sat around all day and played Mahjong(麻将).
One day they played Mahjong from 11am until 11 pm. During the game, no matter who won, the winning card was always the 'Sitiao' card. And that day happened to be November 11th. In order to remember the day, they called it Singles Day.
For breakfast on Singles Day, singles often eat four youtiao, which means the four "ones" in "11.11". Many singles also choose to say goodbye to their single lives on this day. So they take part in 'blind date' parties , trying to find someone they love and many people choose to marry on this day. Besides the meaning of 'single', the four 'ones' of the date can also mean the 'only one' in one’s heart.

D.People who don’t want to get married

The Chinese meaning of the word “'blind date' parties” in this passage is “________”.

A.盲人聚会 B.相亲会

C.4 youtiao D.nothing

In 1882,a baby girl caught such a serious fever that she nearly died. The fever cut her off from the outside world, depriving(剥夺)her of sight and sound. That poor girl was Helen Keller.

Luckily Helen was not a girl who gave up easily.Soon she began to explore the world by using her other senses. She touched and smelled everything she came across. She also learnt to recognize people by feeling their faces or their clothes.

Just before her seventh birthday, the family hired a private tutor﹣Anne Sullivan. With the help of Anne,Helen soon learnt to read and write in Braille(盲文).She also learnt to read people's lips by pressing her finger﹣tips against them and feeling the movement and vibrations(振动).She also learnt to speak,a major achievement for people who could not hear at all.

Helen proved to be a remarkable scholar, graduating with honors from Radchff College in 1904.While she was still at college, she wrote The Story of My Life.

She toured the country, giving lecture after lecture. Many books were written about her and several plays and films were made about her life. Finally she became so famous that she was invited abroad and received many honors from foreign universities. In 1932 she became a vice﹣president of the Royal National Institute for the Blind in the United Kingdom.
