Reading is the key to school success and, like any skill, it takes practice. A child learns to walk by practicing until he no longer has to think about how to put one foot in front of the other. An excellent sportsman practices until he can play quickly, correctly and without thinking. Educators call it “automaticity (自动性)”.
A child learns to read by sounding out the letters and finding the meaning of the words. With practice, he stumbles less and less, reading by the phrase. With automaticity, he doesn’t have to think about the meaning of words, so he can give all his attention to the meaning of the text.
It can begin as early as first grade. In a recent study of children in Illinois schools, Alan Rossman of Northwestern University found that automatic readers in the first grade not only read almost three times as fast as the others, but also got better results in exams.
According to Rossman, the key to automaticity is the amount of time a child spends reading , not his IQ. Any child who spends at least 3.5 to 4 hours a week reading books, magazines or newspapers will probably reach automaticity. It can happen if a child turns off TV just one night for reading at home.
You can test yourself by reading something new which is suitable for your level. If you read aloud with expression, with a sense of the meaning of the sentences, you probably are an automatic reader. If you read brokenly, one word at a time, without expression or meaning, you need more practice.
“Reading is the key to school success” means that reading ______.

A.helps school develop faster
B.is a key to a successful school
C.helps students go to a key school
D.can improve students’ learning results

Children with “automaticity” can read faster because they ______.

A.know how to read the words
B.do not have to think while reading
C.read by themselves without any help
D.pay attention to the meaning of the text

Rossman tells that any child who ______ will possibly be an automatic reader.

A.turns off TV one night 4 weeks
B.reads books by the word quickly
C.spends an hour reading every day
D.gets the same grades as others in exams

The underlined word “stumble” in the passage means “______” in Chinese.

A.结结巴巴地读 B.全神贯注地读
C.心不在焉地读 D.声情并茂地读

The best title for the passage is “______”.

A.IQ Is the Key to the Automaticity
B.TV Is Bad for Children’s Reading
C.Automaticity Depends on Practice
D.Automatic Reads Will Be Successful

根据短文内容,判断句子正误。正确的写“A”,不正确的写“B”(5分)
American English and British English are very different. Sometimes this difference is so big that the two seem like different languages!
Some words in British English mean things that are different in American English. For example a “raincoat” (American English) is called a “Mackintosh” in British English. But in America, a mackintosh is a kind of computer.
Most American sayings (谚语) mean nothing to the British. For example, Americans like to say, “Wake up and smell the coffee” which means “wake up and face reality(现实)”. But the British think it is silly-they do not drink coffee in the morning. Instead, most of them drink tea.
Of course, the two languages are the same in many ways. To “call” someone (American English) is to “ring” somebody in Britain. The two languages borrow from each other a lot. But for foreign students learning English, there can be many problems. After all, American English and British English have, over the years, become so different. Foreign students often learn British English, come to the USA, and cannot understand any American English! So you must ask yourself—where do I want to go in the future – America or England? If it is England, you should learn British English. But if you want to study in America, try learning as much true American English as possible. Watch American movies, listen to American songs, read books written in American English, and talk with an American accent (口音) — not a British one!
Some American English and British English are different in meanings.
“Mackintosh” is a kind of computer in England.
A lot of Englishmen like drinking coffee in the morning.
British English and American English borrow a lot from each other.
If you want to study in England, you’d better learn British English.

Some people make you feel comfortable when they are around. You spend an hour with them and feel as if you've known them half your life. These people have something in common. And after we learn about it, we can try to do it ourselves.
Here are several skills that good talkers have. If you use these skills, they will help you make friends with people quickly.
First of all, good talkers ask questions. Almost everyone will answer a question. One famous businessman said, "At business lunches, I always ask people what they did in the morning. It's a common question, but it will be helpful. " From there you can move on to other things, sometimes to really personal questions.
Second, after good talkers ask questions, they listen for the answer. They usually listen carefully so that they can tell what kind of person they are talking to.
Third, real listening means many things. First it means not to change the topic(话题)of conversation. If someone keeps talking about one topic, you can tell that he is really interested in it. Real listening also means not just listening to words, but to tones(腔调)of voice. If the voice sounds boring, it's time for you to change the topic.
Finally, good talkers know how to deal with the occasion(场合)of parting. If you're saying goodbye, you may give him a firm handshake and say, "I've really enjoyed meeting you." If you want to see that person again, don't keep it secret. Let people know how you feel, and they may walk away feeling as if they're known you half their life.
Can these skills help you make friends with people?
What question does the businessman always ask?
How should good talkers listen for the answer?
If the voice sounds boring, what should you do?
What's the passage mainly about?

How many things can you see in the night sky? A lot! On a clear night you might see the Moon, some planets, and thousands of shining stars.
You can see even more with the help of new inventions. You might see stars where before you only saw dark space. You might see that many stars look larger than others. You might see that some stars that look white are really red or blue. With bigger and bigger telescopes you can see more and more objects in the sky. You can find out more about those objects.
But scientists believe there are some things in the sky that we will never see. We won't see them with the biggest telescope in the world, on the clearest night of the year.
That's because they can't be seen. They're the mysterious(神秘的)dead stars called black holes.
You might find it hard to imagine that stars die. But stars do burn out and die after billions of years.
As a star burns, it gives off light and heat. But when the star burns out, it begins to die.
As the star cools, the outer parts of the star pull in toward the center. The star squashes into a smaller and smaller ball. If the star was very small, the star ends up as a cold, dark ball called a black dwarf(黑矮星). If the star was very big, it keeps squashing inward until it's packed together tighter(紧的)than anything in the universe.
Imagine if the Earth were squashed until it was the size of a tiny ball. That's how tightly this dead star, a black hole, is packed. What pulls the star in toward its center with such power? It's the same force(力量)that pulls you down when you jump—the force called gravity(重力). A black hole is so tightly packed that its gravity sucks(吸收)in everything—even light. The light from a black hole can never come back to your eyes. That's why you see nothing but blackness.
So the next time you look up into the night sky, remember: there's more in the sky! All over in the darkness are black holes—the great mystery of space.

From the passage we know a black hole is.

C.get smaller and smaller D.become darker and darker

The passage is mainly about.

B.what dead stars are
C.how we can see more stars
D.why stars give heat and light

If you find yourself in the middle of an active shooter event(枪击案现场), your safety may depend on whether or not you have a plan.
The plan doesn't have to be difficult to follow. There are three things you could do to make a difference: Run, Hide, Fight.
RUN
First and for most, if we can get out, do it! Always try to escape(逃生)even when others insist on(坚持)staying. Encourage others to leave with us, but do not let them slow us down with the decision. Leave our things behind, and try to find out a way to get out safely. Try to get ourselves out from the harmed-way. Try to stop others walking into a dangerous area and call 110. ★Evacuate whether others agree to or not.
★Leave your things behind.
★Help others escape if possible.
★Stop others entering the area.
★Call 110 when you are safe.
HIDE
If we can't get out safely, we need to find a place to hide. Act quickly and quietly. Try to make sure our hiding place is good. Turn off lights and if possible, remember to lock doors. Silence our cell phones, and if we can't find a safe room, try to hide behind a large object(物体)that may protect us. Remember the following tips:
★Lock and/or blockade (put the things against) the door.
★Silence your cell phone.
★Hide behind large objects.
★Stay very quiet.
FIGHT
As a last resort(万不得已), only if our life is in danger, whether we are alone or working together as a group, fight! We should try to do the following:
★Look for something that can be used to fight.
★Try your best to protect yourself.
Remember these and you will be safe.
