What surprises us most? It is that there are still couples who keep doing things to show each other love. A Japanese farmer is famous for his act of love. He has spent nearly two years planting flowers for his blind wife.
Mr. and Mrs. Kuroki live in a large flower garden. The garden has turned into a tourist attraction (旅游胜地) recently. Around 7,000 visitors come here each year, not only for the beautiful scenery (景色), but also for the special story behind the two old farmers.
In 1956, the newly married couple first moved into the house. The house would be their home for the rest of their lives. They had two children and lived happily for years. However, as years passed, Mrs. Kuroki's health began to decline. Her vision (视力) problems were so serious that she became blind in the end. She hid herself in her home for a long time, refusing to leave unless it was necessary.
Mr. Kuroki got an idea. He wanted to give her gifts﹣flowers. So he got to work on his big surprise. Mr. Kuroki took advantage of the hills around their house and he began to plant a kind of flower with strong fragrance (芳香). He wanted to see if the fragrance would make her come outside. When he realized that his idea was going to work, he worked for nearly two years to completely cover his garden with the flowers.

A man named Randy in Canada liked to hunt for trees. He looked for big trees and old trees in Canada. He made maps to show where these trees were. He did not want to cut them down. Actually he wanted people to take care of them.
Ancient trees are today rare (稀少的) everywhere in the world. On Vancouver Island in Canada, there are so many big trees. The biggest trees are about 800 years old. They are the survivorsof a forest fire. The fire brought damage (损害) to the area about 350 years ago. Randy was told of a very tall tree on Vancouver Island. The tree was said to be 314 feet tall. That would make it the tallest tree in Canada. Randy set out to find the tree.
But someone else found it first. It was found by a logger﹣a person whose job is to cut down trees. The loggers wanted to cut down Canada's tallest tree and all the trees around it.
Randy made a path (小路) in the forest in order that people could see the tall tree. The tree was so big and beautiful that even more and more people wanted to save that forest. Thanks to these people, that forest is now a park. Canada's tallest tree is still there.

What Would You Do? is a TV program on American ABC. The program which is hosted ( 主 持 ) by the news reporter John Quinones is popular with many people. It tests what people will do when they see someone is in trouble to remind us to stand up for the people in need. Here is last week's program.
In a cake shop, two actors acted as a blind woman named Pamela and a man clerk who looked down upon the blind. Hidden cameras were recording what would happen. The blind woman came into the shop and bought a box of twelve cupcakes. The clerk treated the woman badly at first. Then he cheated her. He only gave her 6 dollars instead of 34 dollars.
Would someone be brave enough to stand up for the blind woman? Yes! A customer in the cake shop stopped the clerk from cheating the blind and treating her badly. And other customers joined in soon. John appeared in the end and interviewed the first customer who helped Pamela out. She said it was necessary to give a hand to the people in need. "A psychology professor (心理学教授) once said," she said, "it's difficult to take the first step
to stand up. It needs courage."

There lived a family with eight children in a small village. Two of the children loved painting very much, but the family was so poor that it was impossible to send both of them to study at the art college at the same time. After many discussions, the two boys finally thought out a plan. They had a bet. The loser would go down into the mines (煤矿) and, with the money he made, support his brother studying at the college. Then, when the brother who won finished his studies, he would support the other brother studying at the college.
Fred won and Mark went down into the mines. Fred worked with all his heart and his paintings were much better than those of most of his teachers, and by the time he finished school,he was beginning to make a lot of money from his paintings.
When Fred returned, the family held a big dinner for his great success. Soon after the meal began, Fred stood up from his seat and said to his dear brother, "Mark, now you can go to the
art college and your dream will come true. I will take care of you."
But Mark said softly, "Brother, the three years in the mines has done too much to my hands, so it's too late. Now I can't even hold a glass."
To show his great love and respect ( 尊 敬 ), Fred drew his brother's hands with fingers towards the sky.
He called his drawing "The Praying Hands", which became very famous years later.
