I am Jackie Lee, an American Chinese. Let me tell you about my grandfather's life story.
My grandfather was in 1932 and grew up in a poor village in Fujian, China. At the age of 14, he first heard of America. It was said to be the land of gold and poor people could easily become
there.
So, my grandfather came to America. "I had thought it was easy to __ money in America," he told me. "But when I
in Los Angeles, I realized it was not true. I couldn't find a good job because I spoke little English. I wanted to go to a language school to learn English,
I couldn't afford it. Later, I worked in a small ___
_ , serving the guests, cleaning up the tables, washing the dishes and sweeping the floors. I was such __
helpful and honest worker that my boss was pleased with me. I was popular with my workmates,
. Life became easier and in the end I entered an evening school to learn English."
My grandfather kept working hard, and finally made dream come true. Things do not come easily in life. That is what I have learned
my grandfather.
A saint (圣人) found a group of family members shouting angrily at each other on a river bank. He asked his disciples(信徒), “ 1 do people shout when they are angry with each other?” The disciples2 for a while and one of them said, “Because they lose their calm.”
“But why should they shout when the other persons are just 3 them? They can tell them what they have to say in a 4 manner.” Asked the saint.
The disciples gave some other answers but 5 made the saint pleased. Finally the saint 6 , “When two people are angry with each other, their hearts distance a lot. To cover that distance they must shout in order to 7 each other. The angrier they are, the8 they will have to shout to cover that great distance. What happens when two people fall in love? They don’t shout at each other but talk softly, because their hearts are very close. The distance9 them is very small or doesn’t exist(存在).”
The saint looked at his disciples and continued, “So when you argue with other people, do not say words that distance each other, or else there will come a day when the distance is so great that you will not find the 10 to return.
