What is a hurricane? You may already know that hurricanes are storms that can cause
devastating(毁灭性的) waves, wind, and rain. They happen during
“Hurricane Season,” which is from June 1st until November 30th in
the Atlantic Ocean and from May 15th until November 30th in the
Pacific Ocean.
Categories(类别)of Hurricanes
There are five categories of hurricanes according to wind speeds. The categories help people know how much damage(危害) a hurricane may cause because the greater the wind speed, the more dangerous the storm. For example, a Category 5 hurricane has winds over 155 miles per hour, which are strong enough to destroy the buildings along the shorelines completely
Hurricane Dangers When a hurricane happens together with heavy rainfall, there can be a devastating flood. The centre of a hurricane is called the eye. While most of a hurricane has dangerously strong winds, the eye is actually(事实上) a calm area in the storm. When the eye of a hurricane passes over land, people might think that it‟s over, but before long the wind and rain increase again as the second part of the hurricane moves through
Hurricane Safety Tips There is no way to stop a hurricane or make it change direction, so if you ever find yourself in the path of a hurricane, be sure to remember the following safety tips.
·Be sure you have a radio, batteries, fresh dinking water, and enough food.
·Tell neighbours, friends, and family members your emergency plans. Tell them where you’ll go if you need to leave your home.
·If you live near the ocean, leave your home and travel to a safe place. You could stay with a friend or a family member, in a hotel/motel, or in an emergency shelter area.
Stay inside during the storm. You could be seriously injured(受伤) if you go outside.

Safety Tips
It‟s to stop a hurricane or change its direction. Don‟t forget the safety tips if you find yourself in the path of a hurricane. Stay inside during the storm, ____ you could be seriously hurt.

Since the end of World War I (WWI) in 1918,Canadians, and millions of others around the world have paused at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month to honour the sacrifices our soldiers have made in different wars, fighting for the freedoms that we all enjoy today.
Known as Remembrance Day, the day originated as a tribute to the soldiers of WWI, a dark period for our young country, which claimed the lives of over 60,000 military personnel and civilians and over 16 million dead worldwide.
As there are no more surviving soldiers of WWI,today we rely on the wisdom and words of those soldiers who fought in the wars that followed, and this day now also recognizes their heroic contribution.
They tell us to always remember what those brave souls fought for, and all they ask in return is that we never forget.
That’s why we wear the red poppy (罂粟花);that’s why when we see a soldier in uniform we should stop him or her and say “Thank you” ; that’s why we stop from our busy lives for two short minutes today to honor that request.
Yet this message is fading away, year after year.
Take for example the terrible decision to allow parents to excuse students from Remembrance Day ceremonies(典礼)at school.
Not only is this disrespectful, it distances the student from his or her classmates.
It is difficult to understand why any Canadian parent would want to remove their child from the time-honored tradition of reading the poem In Flanders Fields, while a wreath(花环)of poppies is laid.
It is more important than ever to teach school-aged children about our history,no matter how violent(狂暴的)it was. Sheltering them from the realities of war is great harm.
Understanding why wars happened, or happen today, can help shape choices and decisions they make as adults.
Of course, because we live in a free society, we cannot force a man to do something. It is unlucky, some parents now have their child “opt-out” (退出)of the services. These people should be reminded they are free to make such choices only because of the men and women the rest of us are remembering.
Which of the following is true about Remembrance Day?

A.It’s only held in Canada.
B.Its ceremony lasts 11 hours.
C.It falls on November 11th each year.
D.It’s to celebrate the country’s independence.

What can we learn from the passage?

A.War history is too violent for school children.
B.The writer was once a soldier in the Canadian army.
C.Few students are willing to take part in Remembrance Day ceremonies.
D.More parents are keeping their children away from frightening war stories.

The underlined word “It” in the last paragraph probably refers to _____

A.the death of so many soldiers in wars
B.the fact that there were so many wars after WWI
C.people’s ungratefulness for the freedom they have
D.removing children from Remembrance Day events

The writer believes that .

A.the sacrifice of the soldiers should always be remembered
B.Remembrance Day is becoming less important for soldiers
C.schools - no longer think Remembrance Day is necessary
D.people should be forced to learn about the realities of war

We may know that there are four basic stages that human beings pass through when they enter and live in a new culture. This process, which helps us to deal with culture shock(文化冲击), is the way our head and our personality react to(对…做出反应) the strange new things we meet with when we move from one culture to another.
Culture begins with the “honeymoon stage”. This is the time when we first arrive in which everything about the new culture is strange and exciting. We see new things, hear new sounds and language, eat new kinds of food. This stage can last for quite a long time because we feel we are very excited.
Unluckily, the second stage can be more difficult. After we have got used to our new life, we can become very tired and begin to miss our homeland and our family, friends, pets. All the little problems in life seem to be much bigger and more disturbing when you face them in a foreign culture. This time of cultural adjustment(调整) can be very difficult and lead to pulling away from the new culture.
The third stage is called the “adjustment stage”. This is when you begin to realize that things are not so bad in the host culture. Your sense of humor usually becomes stronger and you realize that you are becoming stronger by learning to take care of yourself in the new place. Things are still difficult, but you are now a survivor!
The fourth stage can be called “at ease at last”. Now you feel quite comfortable in your new place. You can deal with most problems that you have. You may still have problems with the language, but you know you are strong enough to deal with them.
There is a fifth stage of culture shock which many people don’t know about. This is called
“reverse culture shock”. Surprisingly, this happens when you go back to your own culture and find that you have changed and that things there have changed while you have been away. Now you feel a little uncomfortable back home. Life is a struggle!
How do you feel during the first stage of culture shock?

A.Lonely and sad. B.Bored and homesick.
C.Angry and impatient. D.Happy and excited.

How could the third stage be described?

A.Adjustment. B.Pulling away
C.Shock. D.Anger.

What’s the main idea of the passage?

A.Human beings would pass through four stages when they begin to live in a new culture.
B.Entering and living in a new culture is challenging(挑战).
C.It is much fun to live in a new culture.
D.Life in a new culture is a struggle.

Six years ago, I walked into a local animal shelter(庇护所) on a cold, rainy day. Although my house was already full of cats and dogs, I still couldn’t help visiting the shelter. This time as I was walking down the row of pens full of barking dogs I noticed a small boy looking into one of them.
He had a malnourished(营养不良的) looking body and a bony face with a big nose sticking out of the middle of it. He was looking at a small, golden dog. Its bony ribs were showing and its thin tail was folded between its legs. It wasn’t begging for attention like the other puppies but was hiding in the corner instead. The boy looked up at me with sad eyes and asked what was wrong with it. “It was probably abused(虐待) and abandoned”( 被遗弃的), I said. “That is why it is so scared.”
The boy immediately turned to an older lady and said, “Grandma, I want this one.” The old woman smiled and walked to the front desk to fill out the adoption forms. I followed and asked about the boy. I found out that he’d had a hard start in life too. He had just gotten custody(监护权) of him after the state had taken him from his parents. She had hoped getting a dog would make it easier on him. I looked back at him, holding his scared little dog, and said a prayer for them both.
It was yesterday. I was driving down the road enjoying a gloriously sunny, spring day. Then in a green front yard I saw the boy. His teenage body was tall and strong. His nose no longer seemed big but fit well into his smiling face. He was throwing a ball to a healthy, happy dog with shining golden hair. His little act of love and kindness had indeed gone a long way. It had saved a dog’s life, cured his own heart, and given this middle-aged man fresh hope for us all.
The writer entered the animal shelter because ____________ .

A.he loves dogs and pets
B.it was too cold outside
C.he wanted to buy a dog
D.he wanted to see the boy

. Why did the boy want to adopt(收养) the golden dog?

A.Because the dog looked attractive.
B.Because his grandma also liked the dog.
C.Because they had something in common.
D.Because the author advised him to adopt it.

What can we learn from the last paragraph ?

A.The author is a kind-hearted old man.
B.The boy’s nose has become smaller than before.
C.The author enjoys watching people playing with dogs.
D.Both the boy and the dog are growing healthily and happily.
