“Come on, boy. Believe in yourself. You are sure to win.” Then mother and I talked about many different topics. At last I chose the topic “Believe in yourself”. I tried my best to remember    the speech and practiced it over 100 times. With my

We are in a world which is of competition. Our parents compete(竞争) with others in their offices, our brothers and
compete with others in their colleges, and we compete
our classmates in school. Many of us give up in the face of competition and will
be successful. Why can't we do better
 others? One important
is that we have no self-confidence(自信)。
In fact, is born equal (平等的) . You can do what others do. Although your classmates may be better than you
some ways, you may be better than them in other subjects. So everyone has his or her own
. Don’t look at things from a single point of view. Try to
 your own advantages, and
that you can do better than others in those ways.
Competition is not terrible. Don’t be afraid of it. And don’t be afraid of those classmates

  Dear Laura,
Thanks for your message. Yes, I’m having a great time on my exchange programme in France. I was before I arrived here. But my host family is really nice. And you wouldn’t believe how quickly my French has
! I’m very comfortable speaking French now. Although I still make lots of mistakes, it doesn’t bother me like it used to. My biggest challenge is
how to behave at the dinner table. As you can imagine, things are really different from the way they are at home. For example, you’re not supposed to put your bread on your plate. You’re supposed put it on the table! I thought that was pretty strange at first, but now I
it. You’re not supposed to eat anything with your hands except bread, not even fruit! You have to cut it up and eat it with a fork. Also, it’s rude to put your hands in your lap. You should always keep your hands on the table. I have to say, I find it difficult to remember everything, but I’m getting used to things and don’t find them
any more. I’ll write soon and tell you more about life in France. Hope you’re having a good school year.

they will laugh at what you say. Maybe you just aren’t brave enough to speak.
Shyness is like a snake that crawls (爬) into our mouth and stops us . But we shouldn’t let it stay there.
I am 29 years old. Even today, that snake still sometimes me. When I was in high school, I was so shy that I wouldn’t talk to anyone except my parents and best friends. If a stranger asked me the
to a local shop, it was as if I’d forgotten how to talk. One summer, I
a job in a restaurant and that helped a lot. It meant I had to talk to customers. I had to tell them how much their meal cost. I had to ask them
they wanted to drink Coke or Sprite (雪碧). This job taught me how to speak with people.
You may be too young to find a part-time job. But you can look for other to speak with people. You can offer to help an old woman
her heavy bag. Or you can go to get a newspaper for your family. If you do these things for a while, the “shyness” snake
you alone. It’ ll look for another mouth to crawl into.
