We recently treated our now-adult son and his girlfriend to a seafood feast near Cocoa Beach, Florida. Our server, a grandmotherly woman skilled in the art of , flew around the table treating customers. She remembered their special tastes, likes and dislikes-all of which she’d learned after only the brief .
At the end of the meal, she presented the bill, and then went to the growing crowd of other dinners. My husband paid with a credit card, added her , and we were off.
“Mr Goldsmith!” our waitress ran out of the dinning room waving a receipt at him, “Thank you.”
He looked at her as though he didn’t understand. We’ve all seen that universal of confusion.
“What did you give her?” I asked in a whisper, ____ if he had done something unreasonable or made a calculation error.
“Wow, Dad,” our son said, sounding like a 10-year-old. “I’ve never seen a waitress anyone out of the restaurant to say ‘thank you’ for the tip.”
“She gave us great service. I just thought she deserved a little what I usually give.”
It wasn’t until later, when I accidentally heard our son retelling the story of the waitress, that I realized she had given my family something a “thank you”. She showed our son the importance of acknowledging hard work and the rewarding sound of “thank you”. Her show of thanks helped a dad earn a bit more from a loving son. And it reminded me just why I this thoughtful, caring man.

In a recent airing of "Unsolved Mysteries", there was a young boy who was the victim of the holocaust(大屠杀).He'd been in a work camp for several years and somehow had managed to survive the of his imprisonment.
The story was of a boy - now in his sixties - and his quest to find an American soldier who had a kindness to him by some food. It might seem ,but to this child, who had seen nothing but and inhumanity for as long as he could remember, it was a that marked a turning point in his life, for he had lost hope .When he was liberated by the American forces, he was dying. He, needed food. As he was staggering along the road a young soldier down from his tank and gave him some of his supplies. With this one act of generosity, a kind American had aroused the again that there really was some good in the world. And the boy never it. The boy later went to America, raised a family, became successful and worked hard to repay the he had received with his own.
Actually there were so many similar acts of generosity that it would be almost impossible to know for sure who the soldier was.
We all have a choice: to create more light in the world. As Confucius it over 2500 years ago, "It is better to light one small candle than to the darkness."
As the story above so nicely small gestures can often generate huge blessings. If we're constantly looking for and doing kind acts, we will no doubt bring more joy into the world around us as well as into our own world!

I Was Forced to Find My Gifts
I was a pretty typical 17-year-old with a strong interest in painting when something happened. One Sunday, I went to an old swimming hole and dove in. I something under the water head-on and broke a couple of vertebrae(椎骨)of my neck.
For five months I stayed at the hospital, feeling like a to my family. My self-image was instantly . I was described with terms like “disabled” or “crippled.” I was angry and
after I failed so many times at some task---dropping something on the floor and trying to get it back up again.
Near the end of my stay in the hospital, my doctor almost forcibly tied a to my hand. He had seen my paintings I’d done before and me to paint. Fortunately, I found that I
had this artistic ability left. It was like a big weight had been . At least I could do something worthwhile again, and it became a part of my recovery.
After I left the hospital, I stayed at home, feeling desperately . It seemed like I was cut off from . No one can get along love and acceptance. So that fall, I started at the University of Texas, majoring in graphic design.
One day a man happened to see one of my paintings. He had a great for it and asked if I ever did art shows. So I was given a(n) . Much to my surprise, I found that people liked my paintings and would pay for them. That was about 11 years ago. Today, 1,500 have carried my work.
It was the art that provided the for me to get up every morning and do something,
sitting in front of the television. Society has such expectations of the disabled person, so it’s very easy to get sucked into a dependency routine --- you know, the “give me” kind of attitude. And that’s what I take the most in --- the fact that what I’m doing today is well received all over.
