I had never really liked reading and thought it was a waste of time. But once my teacher told our class to go to the library and find our favorite books. I love basketball, so I picked out a basketball book. It was called “Hoops” by Water Dean Myers. It is a good novel, and suitable for basketball lovers.
This story is about a high school ball player named Lonnie. Lonnie lives in a poor family in Harlem, New York. He is a good basketball player and dreams of playing basketball in college, and of course in the NBA. When Cal, his new coach, walks into his life, he just wants to keep away from him. But at last they become friends and face many challenges together.
I am now reading more of Walter Dean Myers’ books. A lot of his books are about growing up in Harlem, just like he did. However, I like “Hoops” best. From Lonnie, you will learn that the people around you really affect who you are, and how much it helps to have the support of family and friends in your life.
This book also makes me think about how hard it would be to grow up in a rough(艰难的) neighborhood. I have realized that we must believe in ourselves when life gets hard. I have learned a lot from this book, and I think anyone will learn much after reading it.
It is a good story, and I really suggest that everyone read it. I hope you will enjoy this book as much as I do.The writer picked out a ______ in the library.

Shut Up Zoos,Not Animals!
You may think that visiting zoos is harmless fun,but you're wrong because zoos are just prisons(监狱)for animals. The difference is that prisoners get out after a few years! Animals in cages look bored and are boring to look at.After all,we all know what an elephant looks like,we've seen them on TV.So why make animals suffer by shutting them up for our fun?Shut up the zoos instead!

I partly agree. But some zoos aren't there for our fun.I've just got back from Jersey Zoo.It saves rare(珍稀)animals and breeds them. Then it returns the babies to the wild. Not all zoos are the same, you know.

Quite agree! Every time I go to the zoo,I never look into the poor animal's eyes! Kept in the small and smelly cages, they look so lonely and sad.Hope one day they will return to nature, where they can live happily and freely with their families.Posted by:John on April 22,at 12:21
Personally,I think zoos are fantastic places for children. They can play with animals and enjoy themselves so much there. Also, they learn a lot about animals. Why shut up?

Travel Tips for Holidays Abroad
Everyone loves holiday abroad. They give us the chance to see some sights, have some fun and relax. However, holidays aren't always a great experience.Follow these tips to make sure you enjoy your holiday.
(31)
Have you packed your passport?Your tickets?Every year, thousands of people miss flights because they've forgotten their passport, they arrive at the airport too late,or even go to the wrong airport.
(32)
How much do you know about the place you are going to visit?Learning a little about the culture of a country will help you understand the people.Learning a few words of another language can also help you make new friends.
(33)
Try to reduce the pollution you cause.Travel by train if you can.Flying produces twenty times more carbon dioxide than traveling by train.Of course,it might be impossible to avoid flying, but when you arrive, use buses or trains instead of taxis.
(34)
You can help a local community a lot by staying in local hotels and eating in local restaurants. This means that your money will go to local people, rather than to a large international company.
(35)
You don't want to forget your holiday.Make a scrapbook﹣a book of memories﹣about your holiday. You can show it to friends,or just use it to remember all the good times you had! And don't forget the new friends you made on holiday.Did you promise to send them pictures or presents?Don't forget to do it! Then next time you go on holiday, you can visit them again.
You need some bread and milk. But half an hour later, you leave the supermarket with a trolley(手推车) full of food. What games do supermarkets play to make us spend so much money?
The tricks usually start before you walk in.Outside the supermarket entrance, anybody who walks past can smell warm, fresh bread. That makes us hungry and ready to buy lots of food, not just bread.
Now you're inside and,of course,a small basket would be fine, but all they have are trolleys. And of course the problem with a trolley is that it looks sad and lonely with just one or two products inside. So we may fill it with something. In fact, supermarket trolleys are actually getting bigger so that we buy more.
Of course, many people shop in supermarkets because they think everything is cheaper than in other shops. So supermarkets offer very cheap prices on some things but then have higher prices for other products. One new trick is to put red stickers on products.Customers usually connect red stickers with lower prices so the red stickers is easy to be noticed, even when there is no reduction! Interestingly, this trick appears to work more with men than with women.
There is a story behind the position of everything in the supermarket. For example, customers often go only to buy milk.So they put it right at the back, forcing you to go past hundreds of shelves full of other products. The position of products on each shelf is also important. The most expensive products are usually at eye﹣level so you see these immediately. The exception is anything that children might like. These products are on lower shelves so that kids see them.
Apart from what you see and smell in a supermarket, what about what you listen to?In most supermarkets they have soft, slow music. It's so relaxing that you slow down and spend more time (and money) in the store. You also move more slowly when the supermarket is busy.Experts suggest it's better to shop when it's quieter,on a Monday or a Tuesday for example. And be careful with queues at the checkouts. These are sometimes deliberate(故意),to make you buy something from the checkout shelves while you wait.
So,next time you go into your local supermarket, remember these tricks and see if you can come with just the things you went for.
