I woke up this morning. There is an empty feeling that I have had so many times before and it seems to be coming back into my mind. What is it? I can’t figure it out.
I got ready for work. On the way I decided to stop and get a cheese from the little shop just down the road. I have never been there before but I was hungry and it would be 5 hours before I got off work.
The owner of the store took my order. He asked me what I wanted and I told him I heard he made a great cheese. He seemed pleased to hear that.
As I was sitting in the small space there was an elderly man finishing his breakfast. He paid the waitress, received his change and made a small joke. As he returned to get up, but it was quite difficult for this man, he looked over at me. I gave a small smile.
He looked again in my direction for a moment and said to me, “Has anyone told you, you have the most beautiful blue eyes?”
Seeing as I have blue eyes, I can’t say I have ever heard that before. I humored him and said, “No, I can’t say ever told me that before.”
He smiled and said, “Since they are blue, you wouldn’t have heard that, but you have beautiful blue eyes.”
I laughed and said thank you very much. He began to tell me a few one liner jokes so I smiled and laughed at his jokes.
He tried to get up to leave again and looked at me and said, “Your smile really brightens a room, do you know that? I said, “Thank you very much.”
He tried to get up, but it took him some time. As he got up he said, “Take care of that smile.”

Today, there are many problems between parents and children. Many people always ask, “ Why do we often argue(争论)?”
Parents show their love for children in different ways. They cook nice food, buy new clothes for them. They also care about their studies. Parents always ask “ You must work hard”, “You should do your homework”, “Why not do homework for your exam?” all the time.
When children get bad marks(分数), their parents get very angry. They stop their children watching TV, playing games or going outside until they are good at their studies.
Why? Most families have only one child. The child is the hope of the family, they want the child to be the best.
Many children want to do things themselves. They want to do many unusual things that parents dislike. They like pop music, basketball and other new things. They enjoy surfing on the Internet and playing QQ games. They spend a lot of time chatting online and listening to the QQ music. In their parents’ eyes, these are a waste of time. For these reasons, parents and children often argue.

What does a policeman usually do? It is not an easy job to describe. After all, a policeman has a number of jobs in one. A policeman often has to control (控制) traffic, either on foot in the center of a town, or in a police car on the roads. In Britain, he might be in the Traffic Police and spend most of his time driving up and down main roads and motorways. A traffic policeman has to help keep the traffic moving and help when there is an accident.
A policeman has to keep peace, too. If there is a fight or some other disturbance, the police can come and restore order. And they often have to deal with situation at great risk(冒险) to their own safety.
We expect the police to solve crime, of course, so an ordinary policeman, even if he is not a detective (侦探), will have to help look for the criminals at times.
And who do we call when there is an emergency (紧急情况)---an crash, a fire, a road accident, or a robbery? We call the police. So a policeman has to be prepared to face any unpleasant emergency that may happen in the modern world.
The police do an necessary job, they do it very well and I support them, but I do not think that I could ever do the job of a policeman.

Everyone needs friends. We all like to feel close to someone. It is nice to have a friend to talk, laugh, and do things with. Surely, there are times when we need to be alone. We don’t always want people around. But we would feel lonely if we never had a friend.
No two people are just the same. Sometimes friends don’t get along well. That doesn’t mean that they no longer like each other. Most of the time they will make up and go on being friends. Sometimes friends move away. Then we feel very sad. We miss them very much. But we call them and write to them. It could be that we would even see them again. And we can make new friends. It is surprising to find out how much we like new people when we get to know them. Families sometimes name their children after a close friend. Many places are named after men and women who have been friendly to people in a town. Some libraries are named this way. So are some schools. We think of these people when we go to these places. There’s more good news for people who have friends. They live longer than people who don’t. Why? It could be that they are happier. Being happy helps you stay well. Or it could be just knowing that someone cares. If someone cares about you, you take better care of yourself. The first paragraph tells us ________.

Wind is the great maker of waves. There are exceptions (例外), such as the tidal (潮汐的) waves sometimes caused by earthquakes under the sea. But the waves most of us know are caused by winds blowing over the sea .
Now let’s learn some physical (自然地理学的) things about it. A wave has height, from low point to high point . It has length (长度)--the distance from this high point to that of the following wave. The period of the wave means the time it takes for succeeding high points to pass a fixed point. None of these things stays the same--for all depend upon (依靠)the wind, upon the depth (深度) of the water and many other matters.
The water that makes up a wave does not advance with it across the sea. Each drop of water turns around in a little circle with the passing of the wave, but returns very nearly to its original position (原先的位置). And it is lucky that this is so. For if the huge groups of water that make up a wave really moved across the sea, sailing would be impossible. If we want to find the speed of a wave, we may use the following way : Speed =" wavelength" × frequency (频率).
Here, wavelength is the distance between two high points , frequency means the number of cycles per second What causes waves?
A.Earthquakes and nothing else. | B.Only wind. |
C.Wind causes most waves. | D.Wind causes some waves. |
Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.The water of a wave moves away across the sea. |
B.The water of a wave remains almost at the same place. |
C.The water of a wave goes with the passing of the wave. |
D.The length of a wave means the distance from the top of a wave to the bottom. |
The speed of Wave 1 is 100 cm/s, frequency 10. The frequency of Wave 2 is 300, while its speed is twice that of Wave 1. Which of the following is right?
A.The wavelengths of the two are equal. |
B.The wavelength of Wave 1 is 10 times longer than that of Wave 2. |
C.The wavelength of Wave 2 is longer than that of Wave 1. |
D.The wavelength of Wave 1 is longer than that of Wave 2. |
