Recently, my husband and I had the chance to do something good for two complete strangers. This        us feel so good that I felt I had to share our experience.
We were traveling to Mexico for        week with our family.      I traveled a lot for work, we had enough frequent flier miles (累计飞行里程) and could upgrade (升级) our tickets to       class seats. We were sitting in the very first two seats in the first row of first class,      the plane to take off. I overheard one of the flight attendants (空乘) telling the others that there was a couple sitting in the        of the plane who had just got married the previous day and were heading off on their      . They had booked their flight eight months in advance       , due to some schedule changes, they had not been able to get      together. No one else on the plane was willing to move and the bride (新娘) was        .
I turned to my husband and told him what I heard. We immediately       and I called the flight attendant over to tell her that we would be happy to     our seats to this couple. The flight attendant seemed          and amazed and said, “Really? Are you sure” We said, “Of course!”
So we moved to the back of the       . I sat in a middle seat part way back and my          sat in the window seat in the last row of the plane.
The flight attendants were extremely thankful and     good care of us even though we were no longer sitting in first class. We both made friends with the people       around us and had a great flight. I had to go back to the front of the plane to pick up a forgotten bag at one point during the      . I saw the newlyweds sitting very close together,      enjoying champagne (香槟).
It didn’t just make my day—it made my whole Thanksgiving        !

Beware of those who use the truth to cheat. When someone tells you something that is36 , but leaves out important information that should be 37 , he can create a false impression.
For example, someone might say, “I just 38a hundred dollars on the lottery. It was great. I took that dollar ticket back to the store and 39 it for one hundred dollars!”
This guy’s a winner, 40 ? Maybe, maybe not. We then discover that he bought two hundred 41 , and only one was a winner. He’s really a big 42 !
He didn’t say anything that was 43 , but he deliberately left out some important44 . That’s called a half-truth. Half-truths are not technically 45 , but they are just as not 46 .
Untrustworthy candidates in 47 campaigns often use this strategy. Let’s say that during Governor Smith’s last term, her state lost one million jobs and48 three million jobs. Then she 49 another term. One of her opponents runs an advertisement 50 , “During Governor Smith’s term, the state lost one million jobs!” That’s true. 51 , an honest statement would have been, “During Governor Smith’s term, the state had a net gain of 52 million jobs.”
Advertisers will sometimes use half-truths. It’s 53 the law to make false claims so they try to mislead you with the 54 . An advertisement might boast (吹嘘), “Nine out of ten doctors recommend Yucky Pills to cure nose pimples.” It 55 to mention that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Corporation.
This kind of cheat happens too often. It’s a sad fact of life: Lies are lies, and sometimes the truth can lie as well.

I believe that families are not only blood relatives, but sometimes people who show up and love you when no one else will.
In May 1977, I was living in a Howard Johnson’s motel off Interstate 10 in Houston. My dad and I 21 a room with two double beds and a bathroom which was too 22 for a 15-year-old girl and her father. Dad’s second marriage was 23 and my stepmother had 24 us both out of the house the previous week. Dad had no 25_ what to do with me. And that’s when my other family 26 .
Barbara and Roland Beach took me into their home 27 their only daughter, Su, my best friend, asked them to. I 28 with them for the next seven years.
Barb washed my skirts the same as Su’s. She 29 I had lunch money, doctors’ appointments, help with homework and nightly hugs. Barbara and Roland attended every football game where Su and I were being cheerleaders. 30 I could tell, for the Beaches there was no 31 between Su and me; I was their daughter, too.
When Su and I 32 college they kept my room the same for the entire four years I attended school. Recently, Barb presented me with an insurance policy they bought when I first moved in with them and had continued to pay on for 23 years.
The Beaches knew 33 about me when they took me in – they had heard the whole story from Su. When I was seven, my mother died and from then on my father relied on other people to _34 his kids. Before I went to live with the Beaches I had believed that life was entirely 35__ and that love was shaky and untrustworthy. I had believed that the only person who would take care of me was me.
36 the Beaches, I would have become a bitter, cynical (愤世嫉俗的) woman. They gave me a(n) 37 that allowed me to grow and change. They kept me from being paralyzed(使瘫痪,使麻痹,使无能力)by my _38 , and they gave me the confidence to open my heart.
I 39 family. For me, it wasn’t the family that was there on the day I was 40 , but the one that was there for me when I was living in a Howard Johnson’s on Interstate 10.

It was the summer of my freshman year of college. Instead of heading home for a nice long 1 , my friends and I had decided to 2 and take some extra courses. We had 3 the top floor of an old house to live in. My bed was 4 into a stuffy (愁闷的)former laundry room and each night was a new 5 in humidity. Still, it felt 6 to be in my own place for the first time. After the first few weeks, 7 , the thrill faded and 8 set in. I found myself sitting alone each night 9 my home and my parents.
My summer holidays had always been a 10 time. I spent hours playing basketball and swimming. I talked to my Mom while she tended her flowers. I 11 helping my Dad drag firewood for the winter. And every night I sat at a dinner table full of delicious food 12 with love while my family filled the room with the sound of sweet 13 . Now I found myself missing them 14 than ever.
Finally when my 15 were at their lowest, I heard a 16 at the door. I opened it and was 17 to see my parents standing there with big smiles to fill my 18 heart and a box full of food to feed my hungry friends. We spent the afternoon eating 19 , and just being together. It felt so good, and I felt so loved.
Victor Hugo wrote that, “The supreme happiness of life is the 20 that one is loved; loved for oneself, or better yet, loved despite oneself.” It was that gift of happiness that my parents gave me that afternoon and every day of my life.
