The word “sport” first meant somethin that people did in their free time. Later it often meant hunting (捕猎) wild animals and birds.
About a hundred years ago the word was first used for organized games. This is the usual meaning of the word today. People spend a lot of their spare time playing football, basketball, tennis and many other sports. Such people play because they want to. A few people are paid for the sport they play. These people are called professional sportsmen. They may be sportsmen for only a few years, but during that time the best one can earn a lot of money.
For example, a professional footballer in England earns more than $3000 a year. The starts earn a lot more. International golf and tennis champions (网球锦标赛) can make more than $50000 in a year. Of course, only a few sporsmen can earn as much money as that. It is only possible in sports for individuals (个人的) like golf, tennis and motor-racing. Perhaps the most surprising thing about sportsmen and money is that: the star can earn more money from advertising than from sport. An advertising for sports equipment (设备) does not simply say “Buy our thing”. It says “Buy the same shirt and shoes as…”. Famous sportsmen can even advertise things like watches and food. They allow the companies to use their name or a photo of them and they are paid for this. Sport is no longer just something for people’s spare time.

I felt very sad not to be able to get the ticket for the film Titantic last Friday. I learned in the newspaper that ticket could be bought at the cinema box office (售票处) in Richland Hill every day between 10:00 and 4:00. Because I work from 9:00 to 5:30, the only time I could go to the cinema was during my 45-minute lunch time. In general, it’s hard to spend enough time in both concentrating on lessons and taking part in social activities. But I wanted to succeed in both. I knew this would be a challenge but I didn’t realize how difficult it was until my classes in the high school began,
I got on well with other girls. After school, I often had ice cream with them first instead of finishing my homework before it was time to hand it in, I always finished it the next day between classes.I knew it wasn’t very good and the grades that I got showed I was not hard-working enough. I realized that I needed to find some kind of balance.
So I created a timetable that would divide my time between studying and relaxing. It was a good idea but I was only able to follow it for a few days because it made me under too much pressure.
Later, I tried another plan. Each week I listed everything that I had to get done during the week and the time by which I had to get it done. Then under the things I had to do, I made another list of things that I could do if I had time.
It worked really well. Ever since I have never missed any important things. At the same time, I enjoyed my spare time a lot.
Planning my time has been challenging, but I continue to do it. I’m glad that I’ve learned to balance things and it has helped prepare for what is coming after graduation. At first, when did the writer always finish her homework?
