A lady and her husband stepped off the train in Boston. They walked without an appointment(预约)into the outer of Harvard’s president. But they were by his secretary and kept waiting. For hours, the secretary took no notice of them, that the couple would finally become and go away. But they didn’t. The secretary finally decided to disturb the president, though .
A few minutes later, the president walked towards the couple with a face. The lady told him, “We had a son that Harvard for one year. He loved Harvard. He was here. But about a year ago, he was accidentally killed. My husband and I would like to a memorial(纪念物)to him, somewhere on campus.”
The president wasn’t . Instead, he was shocked. “Madam,” he said, “we can’t put up a statue for every person who studied at Harvard and died. If we did, this would look like a cemetery(墓地),” “Oh, no,” the lady quickly. “We don’t want to put up a statue. We would like to give a to Harvard.” The president rolled his eyes and at the couple and then exclaimed, ” A building! Do you have any how much a building costs? We have spent over $7,500,000 on the campus building at Harvard.” For a moment the lady was silent. The president was , because he could get rid of them now. Then the lady turned to her husband and said quietly, “Is that all it costs to start a ? Why don’t we just start our own?” Her husband nodded. their offer was turned down. Mr. and Mrs. Stanford traveled to California where they founded the University that bears their , a memorial to a son that Harvard no longer about.

Mary was seven years old. Her parents recently moved to a new town, and so Mary was going to a 36 school, which was a few kilometers from the house they lived in now. A school bus going around picked up 37 every morning and brought them back to their 38 every afternoon, and as both of Mary’s parents 39 to go to work, she always went on this bus.

But one morning the alarm 42 to go off, and it was not until a quarter past eight that Mary’s mother suddenly 43 , looked at the clock and said, “What’s ever happened to that clock?” and then44 into Mary’s room to wake her up.
“I’m sorry, dear,” she said, “ 45 you’ll have to wash and dress very quickly, have an even 46 breakfast and then I’ll 47 you to school on my way to the office.”
“But how can you find the 48, Mum?” Mary said, “You’ve been to school only once.”
“Yes,” her mother answered, “but you’ve done the 49 several times now on the bus, so you can be my guide to get there, can’t you?”
“Oh, yes,” said Mary, “I suppose so.” She washed, and 50 and had a quick breakfast, and then they set off. Mary told her mother to turn each time they came to a place she 51 .In this way she made her mother drive round most of the town 52 they got to her school. “Why ever did you make me go such a long way round, Mary, instead of the most 53 way?” her mother asked her.
“Well, Mum,” answered Mary, “it was because I didn’t know 54 else to get here. That’s the way our bus always goes to 55 the other children to school.

Mother always said I was born to swim. I was 41 at the amazing fact. If this was true, then why was I afraid of water? I went to swim every summer, but I made 42 progress. I was worried and blamed myself several times. When I watched people swimming 43 , how I wished I had learnt to swim!
The story of how I learnt to swim is dramatic. One summer afternoon, my 44 and I went to the swimming pool to swim. While he was 45 his clothes, I was wandering along the bank of the pool. Suddenly I heard a voice, “ 46 !” and then came a big noise and 47 splashes(溅水). Just when I was 48 the swimmer’s skills, I slipped into the pool! I was so afraid that I 49 at once! But the water kept coming towards me and I 50 lots of it. I was moving upside down and trying to reach the 51 . I was struggling very hard to keep my head 52 the water. A(n) 53 was like a hundred years to me. To my surprise, I was able to keep the style! Just then, my father saw me and he seemed to be 54 . He then said, “Calm down, just 55 your arms and legs like this. Right!” And I56 it! I finally learnt to swim! You can’t imagine how happy I was and I wanted to 57 for joy!
From this experience I learnt that one’s power is 58 . Sometimes you could show that power in an emergency. If you believe that, you will discover the power 59 within yourself and achieve your goals. And one has to stay calm when it’s 60 . To calm down helps you to think clearly and make the best decision.

I ran into a stranger as he passed by. “I’m so sorry!” was my reply. Then he said, “Excuse me too. I wasn’t 36 watching for you.” We were very polite, this stranger and I. Then we went 37 our way after saying goodbye.
But at38 , a different story is told. How we treat our loved ones, young and old. Later in the kitchen, as I 39 the meal, my daughter walked up to me, very still. When I turned, I40 knocked her down. “Get out of the way!” I shouted with a frown (皱眉). She stepped away silently, with her little heart 41 . I didn’t realize how rudely I had spoken.
That night, when I lay 42in bed, God’s quiet voice spoke to me and said, “While43 with a stranger, you are calm and polite, but with those you love, you are quick to excite. Go to look around on the kitchen floor, you’ll find some flowers there by the 44 . Those are the flowers she brought for you. She 45 them herself — pink, yellow, and your favorite blue. She stood there quietly and you never saw the 46in her eyes.”
By this time, I felt sad and small and now my own tears began to fall. I quietly went and knelt (跪) by her 47 . “Wake up, my dear,” I said. “Are these the flowers you picked up for me?” She smiled, “I found them out by the tree, I 48 them in a napkin(纸巾), just for you. I knew you’d like them, especially the49 .” I said, “I am so sorry that I missed them today. And I 50 have fussed (大惊小怪) at you that way. ”
And she whispered, “Mommy, that’s OK… I still love you51 .” I hugged her and said, “I love you, too and I love the flowers.”
Do you know that: if you die tomorrow, the 52 you are working for could easily replace you in a matter of days. But the family you leave 53 will feel the loss for the rest of their lives. And come to think of it, we pour ourselves more into our 54 than into our families--- an unwise investment (投资) indeed.

I had just finished high school when a disaster hit our family. It was October 1962, and 21 was out of the question. So I found a job. In 1971, my employer announced only graduates(大学毕业生) would get 22 . My job seemed at a dead end unless I 23 further. And to graduate, I had to pass the higher secondary examination first.
I 24 an admission form(表格) and rode to the Human Resource(人力资源) Management office. On arriving there, I was 25 ---I couldn’t find the form. It was the last day to 26 the form, and no blank forms were 27 at the office. I was standing there, disappointed, 28 an elderly gentleman asked me why I looked so 29 . I told him what happened, 30 , “Now I’ll have to wait another year.”
“Well,” he said, “if you’re really serious about studying further, come with me. I have a 31 blank form at home.”
It was 12:30 pm. The counter(柜台) would 32 at 2 pm. His home was 10 km away and I had a slight 33 of going somewhere with a stranger. Anyway, this was my last chance. We reached his house on my bike. He advised me to remain 34 , and gave me a pen and the form. When it was 35 , he told me to rush back and 36 carefully. I reached the office at 1:58 pm. There were two people in line, waiting for their 37 . Just then, the counter official announced that no more forms would be 38 after mine. I breathed a sigh of 39 .
I passed the exam and later got a bachelor’s degree. I also got the promotions. I 40 it all to the timely help from a true gentleman whose name I forgot to ask.

Years ago, if a teenager had some problems in his life, he might go home and write in his diary; now, a teenager with 21 problems might go onto the Internet and write about them in a blog(博客). In many ways, a diary and a blog are very 22 . But what makes bolgging different from writing in a(n)23 diary?
The biggest difference is that a blog is much more 24 than a diary. Usually, a teenager treats his diary like a book full of 25 that he does not want to 26 with others.
It’s interesting that someone who writes in a blog 27 a diary will probably write nearly the same information.
I have a little sister, and sometimes I go online to read her 28 . She writes about things like waking up early for swimming practice and not studying enough for her chemistry test. 29 I was her age, I wrote about the same things, but 30 in my dairy. Then, after I had finished writing, I would hide my diary in a secret place because I was 31 that my sister might read it.
The biggest 32 with blogging is that anyone can read what you write. If I was angry with a friend during high school and wrote something 33 about him in my diary, he would never know. 34 , if my sister ever wrote something bad about a friend, that friend might 35 her blog and get angry.
There are also 36 to blogging, of course. If I was feeling sad one day and wrote in my diary, “ Nobody cares about me”, because no one would 37 about it. However, if my sister wrote the same sentence in her blog, her best friends would quickly 38 and tell her how much they 39 her. Blogs help people 40 in contact with their friends and know what the people around them are doing.
