Most young people 21 some form of 22 activity. It may be walking, cycling,or swimming, or in winter, skating, or skiing. It may be a game of some kind—football, hockey, golf or tennis. It may be mountaineering. (登山运动) Those who have a23 for climbing high and difficult mountains are often 24 with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to 25 cold and hardship, and to take 26 on high mountains? This astonishment is caused, probably, by the 27 between mountaineering and other forms of activity 28 which men 29 their leisure (空闲的) time. Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no manmade rules, 30 there are for such games as golf and football. There are, 31 rules of a different kind which would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this freedom from manmade rules 32 makes mountaineering 33 to many people. Those who climb mountains are 34 to use their own methods. If we compare mountaineering and other more familiar sports we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a “team game” .We should be mistaken in this. There are , it is true, no “matches” between “teams” of climbers but when climbers are on a rock face 35 by a rope 36 which their lives may depend, there is obviously teamwork. The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man. He has to fight the forces of nature. His sport requires high mental and physical 37. A mountain climber continues to improve in skill year after year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty, and most international tennis 38 are in their early twenties. 39 it is not unusual for men of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. They may take more time than younger men, but they probably climb with more skills and less waste of effort, and they certainly 40 equal enjoyment.

We waited. Then there was a roar from the crowd, like an explosion, as the first members of the band 44 the stage. My brother leaned over and shouted something in my ear, but I couldn’t 45 what he was saying. The first song was already starting and the music was as 46 asa jet engine. I could 47 the drum beats and bass notes in my stomach.
I can’t recall any of the songs that the band played. I just 48 that I really enjoyed the show and didn’t want it to 49 . But in the end, after three encores (加演), the show finished. We left the 50 and walked unsteadily out onto the pavement. I felt a little dizzy, as if I had just 51 from a long sleep. My ears were still 52 with the beat of the last song.
After the 53 , I became a Black Wednesday fan too for a few years before getting into other kinds of music. Once in a while, 54 , I listen to one of their songs and 55 I’m back at that first show.

Just recently I was invited to attend a ceremony to celebrate the 25th anniversary of a business owned by a very good friend of mine.
The day of the 1 arrived. However, because of a business appointment 2 time, I knew that I was going to be late, 3 I phoned to let my friend know. I arrived 20 minutes 4 and my friend came out to welcome and 5 me. He said he was 6 to see me and had put off the 7 part of the celebration, knowing that I was on my 8 .
As I joined the other guests, I could 9 a wonderful sense of friendship, warmth and happiness in the room. 10 , I had very little time to speak to more than a couple of people 11 the official part of the celebration 12.
In his 13 , my friend welcomed all the guests on behalf of his family and team members, and then 14 the majority of the people who were gathered in the room for their support and friendship over the 15 25 years. In his thank-you speech, he used a quote: Always 16 with the person you took to the dance.
He then went on to talk about the importance of 17 loyal to those people who had supported him. He also 18 that during that time many people had offered their services and even sometimes provided a 19 arrangement for his business.
What a great 20 it was for me to continue to go to the dance with such a good friend!

I think that the most basic and powerful way to connect to another person is to listen. Just listen. Perhaps the most 36 thing we ever give to each other is our attention (注意力). Especially if it’s 37 from the heart. When people are talking, there’s no need to do 38 but receive them. Listen to what they’re saying. Care about it. Most times 39 about it is even more important than understanding it.
One of my patients told me that when she tried to tell her story, people often 40 to tell her that they once had something just 41 that happened to her. Her pain became a story about 42 . So, finally she stopped 43 to most people because she just felt too lonely. When we interrupt what someone is 44 to let them know that we understand, we 45 the focus of attention to ourselves. But if we just 46 , they know we care. Many people with cancer can talk about the relief (宽慰) of having someone just listen.
I have 47 learned to respond to someone crying by just listening. I 48 that passing a person a tissue (面巾纸) may be just another 49 to shut them down and take them out of their experience of 50 . Now I just listen. When they have 51 all they need to cry, they find me there with them.
This 52 thing has not been that easy to learn. It certainly went against everything I had been taught since I was very 53 . I thought people listened only 54 they were too shy to speak or did not know the 55 . A loving silence often has far more power to heal than words.
