Last spring, I was fortunate to be chosen to participate in an exchange study program. In my application letter, I was careful to how much I wanted to see France; evidently, my excitement really came through in my words. Once I that I was going, all I could think about was the fun of foreign travel and making all sorts of new and friends. While traveling was inspiring and meeting people was , nothing about my term in France was what I .
The moment I arrived in Paris, I was by a nice French couple who would become my host parents. My entire experience was joyous and exciting I received some shocking news from my program coordinator(协调人): there had been a death in my host parents’ extended family. They had to travel outside France for several weeks. That afternoon, I had to out of one family’s house into another. The exchange coordinator told me I’d have a this time and asked whether I could share a bedroom with an English speaker. To avoid the temptation(诱惑) to my native language, I asked not to be with an English-speaking roommate. When I got to my new room, I myself to my new roommate Paolo, a Brazilian(巴西人) the same age as I, whom I was surprised to find playing one of my favorite CDS! In just a few hours, we knew we’d be good friends for the rest of the .
I left France with many , so when people asked me what my favorite part of the trip was, they are always to hear me talk about my Brazilian friend Paolo and scores of weekdays in class, weeknights on the town, and weekends France we enjoyed together. I love how people seem so different, but end up being so . The most valuable lesson I gained from studying in France wasn’t just to respect the friend people to respect all people, for your next best friend could be just a continent away. I would recommend an exchange program to anyone who wants to experience foreign cultures and gain meaningful .

Sometimes your weakness can become your biggest strength. ____ the story of a 10-year-old boy for example , who decided to study judo (柔道) with a judo teacher despite the fact that he had his left arm because of a car accident .
The boy was doing well, so he couldn’t understand , , after three months of , the teacher had taught him only one move.
“ Sir ,” the boy finally said , “ I be learning more moves?” “This is the only move you know , but this is the only move you’ll need to know ,” the teacher replied. Not quite understanding , believing in his teacher , the boy kept training.
Several months later , the teacher took the boy to his first tournament (锦标赛) . Surprising , the boy easily won his first three matches. Still by his success , the boy was now in the finals .
This , his opponent (对手) was bigger , stronger , and more experienced . For a while , the boy to be in the disadvantage . Concerned that the boy might , the judge called a time-out . He was about to stop the match the teacher interrupted . “ No,” the teacher , “ Let him continue .”
, his opponent made the biggest mistake : he dropped his guard . Instantly , the boy used his move to throw him down . The boy had the tournament .
On the way home , the boy gathered to ask the teacher what was really his mind. “ Sir , how did I win the tournament with only one move ?”
“ You won for two reasons,” the teacher answered . “ First , you’ve almost one of the most difficult throws in all judo. Second , the only defense (防御) for all that move is for your opponent to take hold of your left arm..” The boy’s biggest weakness---- the loss of his left arm, had become his biggest strength.

Growing up in my Grandma’s house as a boy was an experience that would shape me for the rest of my life. We were poor in everything but . yet I learned so much about life there. My Mom, Dad, Grandma, two , and I were all into a home made from two old shabby cars. I always knew what my next would look like because I had seen my older brother them the year before, I always knew what we were going to be in winter, because I had it in the garden during the summer. , I never felt poor. No king ever ate as good as we did on Sundays after church when Grandma her homemade meatballs, spaghetti(意大利式细面条)and freshly baked bread.
we had so little I can still remember Dad, Mom, and Grandma giving so much. We were always with others. Everyone who our family could expect a of spaghetti, or a jar of vegetables, or a flower pot full of fresh flowers. I can still remember my parents’ eyes whenever they passed something on to others. We never felt than when we shared what we were given. I learned early that the greatest joy comes from giving getting. Giving makes your spirit greater.
Don’t be afraid to what you have to others. Share everything you have. If you have a beautiful , then smile at whoever you come across. If you have a few extra dollars, then give them to the people in need. If you have a talent, then share it with others. If you have a heart full of love, then give it to everyone. No life ever truly lives it becomes a gift, so make your whole life a gift to the world.
