Dear Victor,
I have received your loving letter from school and I am glad to know that you are becoming responsible(有责任的) enough to decide on your career(职业).
You are now in the final year of high school and are going to start further education in college. You know that we belong to different times, and my social life is different from yours. However, all I can say as advice is that you must choose a career wisely. The first consideration is your interest. You can only succeed and feel happy when you do something you enjoy. You must get a job which not only provides you with something useful, but also you are pleased with. Then, you must read a lot in the field(领域) you are aiming at. Also, you should get to know the men and women who work in that field. When mind and heart work together, success is inevitable.
No career is more or less important. I think your interest may be in the field of making TV programs. Your good communication skills, your taking an active part in school plays and the prizes you have won in speech competitions all lead you to that direction. So a career in Mass Communication and TV film production will bring luck to you. If you succeed in that field, you will become famous and rich.
Think a thousand times before making any final decision about your career. After all, we want you to be a man of success.
We all know that you are old enough to think for yourself.
With all the best wishes! Your loving father

I was offered several part-time jobs at university. Finally I decided to give one of them a go. Now I work in a dining hall on campus(校园). My main duties are to serve food and wash dishes.
I discovered I would have to stand still for at least three hours at a time and was afraid it was not going to be as much fun as I had thought. Smiling all the time and remembering all the strange food names have been a challenge(挑战), too.
I have had really funny experiences. One of the sauces is called "marinara" which is a kind of tomato-based sauce like salsa(辣茄酱). Before I knew what it was, someone asked me to give him the sauce, and I replied: "What? The marijuana(大麻) sauce?" He was astonished. Marijuana is an illegal(非法的 ) drug and has nothing to do with sauce. It was quite embarrassing(使人尴尬的)! I have never forgotten the word "marinara" since then.
I also had to make a wrap(卷饼) for the first time. I had tasted Mexican wraps many times in China, but making one was a different matter. I could feel my face was burning with sweat and embarrassment as I broke the thin wraps again and again while people were waiting impatiently. Mexican wraps taste great when they're soft, but I do wish they could be made thicker and harder so they wouldn't break so easily.
My favorite part of the job is working in the kitchen. I hold the water cannon(水枪) like a policeman about to fight with "criminals” ----the dirty dishes. It's quite exciting to feel the water rushing out of the pipe. I usually get thoroughly(彻底地) soaked, but it feels good, a bit like taking a shower. Sometimes our boss allows us to play music to cheer us up. I often hum along to the music while washing dishes.
This is my first experience of being a student worker. It is hard work, but it's turning out to be quite fun.

Life for Cathy Taylor’s three children is very busy. Their school days are busy enough. However, after school Cathy takes the two boys from football to basketball. Then she has to take her daughter to piano lessons. The tired children don’t get home until 7 pm. They have a quick supper, and then it’s time for homework.
The Taylors are like many American and British parents. They take their children from activity to activity. Doctors say many children are under too much pressure. Teachers complain about teaching tired kids in the classroom.
Most children take part in after-school clubs. Activities include sports, language learning, music, and math classes. Now parents seem to push their children a lot more. They see other children doing a lot of things, and they feel their own children should do the same.
Linda Miller, a mother of three in London, knows all about such pressure. “In some families, competition starts from a very young age,” She says. “ Mothers send their kids to all kinds of classes when they are very young. And they are always comparing them with other children. It’s crazy. People shouldn’t push their kids so hard.
Dr Alice Green agrees. She also says that these children may find it hard to think for themselves when they are older. “ Parents are trying to plan their kids’ lives for them. When these kids are adults, they might find it difficult to plan things for themselves.” Parents should learn to give their kids a bit more time to themselves. On the one hand, children need organized activities. On the other hand, they also need time and freedom to relax, and they need time to do things by themselves. When do Cathy Taylor’s three children got home every day?
