Soul.South Korean---Prime Minister Chung Hong-won,apologized and offered to resign  (辞职)on Sunday,as the country remained angry and sad over the sinking of a ship that left 302(most of them are high school students),dead and missing.
At eight fifty-eight p.m,April 16,2014,a ship carrying many passengers sank into the sea.It is reported that there are 339 high school students and teachers,2 Philippines singers,a staff of 24 and a total of 477 people on board.
Later because of bad weather, the underwater rescue(救援)and search have been greatly difficult.Efforts were also being made to prevent the ship’s oil from going further into the sea.
The government has come under fire as it showed the accident had been caused partly because of the misleading of government and lack of safety measures. It was also criticized(谴责) for failing to save the people quickly during the early rescue hours when the accident happened.
South Koreans were especially heart-broken by the fact that most of the dead and missing were students on a class trip.People who were saved reported that the captain and staff of the ship ordered passengers to stay inside and not to move while the ship was sinking off.It was probably one of the reasons why people still died after they had already worm the life jackets.
As for Sunday morning,115 passengers remained missing. The number of the survivors(幸存者),174,has not changed. The deaths have been 187 so far.
When did this terrible accident happen?

There was a lovely vegetable patch (菜园). A large tree grew there. Both the patch and the tree gave the place a wonderful look, and they were the pride of the gardener. But no one knew that the vegetables and the tree couldn’t stand each other. The vegetables hated the tree’s shadow (阴影), because it left them only just enough light to live. The tree, on the other hand, hated the vegetables because they drank nearly all the water, leaving him just enough to live.
The situation became so serious that the vegetables decided to use up all the water in the ground so that the tree would die. The tree answered back by not protecting the vegetables from the hot sun, so they began to dry up. Soon the vegetables were really weak, and the tree was drying up.
The gardener wondered why and stopped watering them. When he did that, both the tree and the vegetables realized that it was better to help each other. They learned how to live in harmony with those around them. So they decided to work together, using both the shade and the water to grow well. After seeing how well they were doing, the gardener gave the best care to his vegetable patch, watering and fertilizing (施肥) it better than any other patch for miles around.

London used to be “foggy” for the same reason that cities like Beijing or Chongqing are “foggy” today. The “fog” was in fact smog, a mixture of smoke and fog. In other words, it was made by air pollution. In London, some of this pollution came from factories, but much of it came from the coal(煤)that people burnt in their houses to keep warm during the winter. By the 1950s, London’s smog problem had become so bad that the government decided to do something to clean the air. A new law was made and nobody could burn coal in any British city. Within a few years, the air became much cleaner. There were no more “pea-soupers”.
Many Chinese cities now face the same sort of problem with air pollution that London faced 40 or 50 years ago. However, this problem is more difficult for Chinese cities to solve. One reason is that more of the pollution comes from the factories, rather than from coal burnt in people’s houses. If these factories were closed, this would harm the economy and lots of people would lose their jobs. Another reason is that changing from coal to cleaner fuel(燃料), like gas, is quite expensive.
However, the air in many Chinese cities is becoming cleaner and cleaner, as the government and people pay more and more attention to cutting down pollution. As a result, there are fewer “pea-soupers” in Beijing than there used to be.

(C)The earth is not only, but also thirsty for water. This may seem strange to you. because nearly 70% of the earth’s surface(表面)is covered with water. But about 97% of that is sea water, or salt water. Man can only use the other 3%—the fresh water from rivers, lakes, and other sources. And we can’t even use all of that, because some of it is in the form of icebergs and glaciers(冰川). Even worse, some of it has been polluted.
However, as things stand today, the fresh water is still enough for us. But our need for water is becoming larger and larger quickly—almost day by day. We should take steps to do with this problem now and in this way we can get away from a serious world-wide water shortage later on.
We all have to learn how to stop wasting our valuable water, one of the first step is to develop ways of reusing it. Today in most large cities, water is used only once and then sent out into a sewer system(下水道), from there it returns to sea or runs into underground (地下)places.
But even if every large city reused its water, we still would not have enough. All we’d have to do to make use of sea water in the world is to remove the salt.
The earth is thirsty for water because_______ .
