A man had two sons. They were twins. They were born at almost the same time and looked exactly alike. But in one important way they were very different. One was an optimist(乐观者),while the other one was a pessimist(悲观者).
The man was worried about his sons. There are good and bad things in life, he knew. He did not want them to be too pessimistic or too optimistic. He took his problem to a friend, Sally.
“How can I cure(治愈)them of their foolish optimism and pessimist?” he asked his friend .
Sally was thoughtful. Then she said, “When is their next birthday?”
“It’s on Wednesday,” the father replied. “They’ll be twelve years old.”
“Excellent,” Sally said. “Here’s what you should do. Give your pessimist son a really wonderful present. Give your optimistic son a really poor present. That should cure them of their optimism and pessimisms.”
The father did as his friend told him.
On Wednesday morning the boys looked at their birthday presents.
The pessimist looked at his first. It was a beautiful and very expensive gold watch, but he was not pleased with it.
“Huh,” he said, “I don’t like this very much .I’m sure it won’t keep good time. It will always be fast or slow and it will probably break many times, and I’ll have to spend lots of money to get it repaired(修理).”
Then the optimist looked at his present. He was really pleased. “Look! Dad’s given me a shoelace (鞋带).” he said. He held up the shoelace.
“I haven’t found the shoes yet, but I’m sure they are here somewhere.”

If you lose 12 times in a row (连续地), will you just give up? Dale Carnegie, a pioneer in public speaking and self-development, kept trying. And he became famous by showing people how to be successful.
Carnegie was born into a poor family in the United States. The boy didn’t see a train until he was 12 years old. In his teens, he had to get up at 3 am every day to milk the cows for his family.

He said later that he thought of killing himself after failing so many times. But soon Carnegie was seen practicing public speaking on the riverside. His hard work paid off at last. In 1906, Carnegie won a famous speech contest and became well-known. “Believe that you will succeed, and you will,” he said.
In order to share his success, Carnegie opened schools and wrote books. His best-sellers(畅销书) include How to Win Friends and Influence People and How to Stop Worrying and Start Living. Nowadays, many children spend hours a day looking at computer screens or other digital (数码的) products. Some eye care doctors say all the screen time has caused more children to have what they call computer vision syndrome (视力综合症).
Nathan Warford is an optometrist in the US. He says he has seen more children having eye problems. “More children come into my office because their parents have noticed that they have headaches (头疼)or red eyes, or because their degree of short-sightedness appears to be increasing (增加)very fast and they’re worried,” he said.
Dr. Warford says part of the problem is that even if their eyes start to feel uncomfortable or they start to get a headache, some children don’t tell their parents, because they don’t want their games or the computer to be taken away. Another part of the problem is that people blink (眨眼睛) less often when they look at the screen.A person who uses a computer or a digital product blinks about a third as much as we normally(正常地) do in everyday life. Happiness is for everyone. You don’t need to care about those people who have beautiful houses with large and swimming pools or those who have nice cars and a lot of money and so on. Those who have big houses may often feel lonely and those who have cars may want to walk on the country roads at their free time.
In fact happiness is always around you if you put your heart into it. When you are in trouble at school, your friends will help you. W hen you study hard at your lessons, your parents are always taking good care of your life and your health. When you get success, your friends will say congratulations to you. When you do something wrong, people around you will help you to correct it. And when you do something good to others, you will feel happy too. All these are your happiness. If you notice them you can see that happiness is always around you.
Happiness is not the same as money. It is a feeling of your heart. When you are poor, you can also say you are very happy because you have something else that can’t be bought with money. When you meet with difficulties, you can’t say loudly you are very happy because you have more chances to challenge yourselves. So you cannot always say you are poor and you have bad luck. If you take every chance you get, you will be a happy and lucky person.
