Dear Mrs. Green,
I am Jack White’s father. I am writing to you to ask for three-day leave this week. Because we have to deal with some important family matters in Washington D.C. Jack’s grandfather is badly ill in hospital and he hopes we can go to see him. Maybe it will be the last time. We have already told Mr. Johnson, the schoolmaster, about it.
Could you please give Jack some homework to keep up with the class while he is absent? You can contact me on 88763568 if you would like to discuss the homework.
Thanks again for you help. We are very happy with Jack’s progress in study.
Sincerely
Mr. White
Who is Mr. Johnson?
How long will Jack be absent from school?
Where will Jack and his father go?
What does Mrs. White ask Mrs. Green to do for Jack?
Who wrote this letter?

Many children in England get given lunch at school. There are new rules about what children may be given for these lunches. The reason for this is to give children healthier food. There are many foods that children aren't allowed to eat and they're only allowed to eat small amounts of fatty or sweet food.If you were at a school there, you might hear this conversation as you wait for your lunch.

Dinner lady:Well, that's why these rules were brought in.Too many children were eating junk food, especialy chips.Children like chips, but they aren't a healthy choice.

Josh:I'll have an apple juice with that, please.

Dinner lady:OK,but its only 150 ml.You aren't allowed more than that as juice has sugar

in it.The new rules encourage you to drink water. No soft drinks at all.

Many years ago,a French naturalist,Comte de Buffon, wrote some books about natural history. The books were a great success even though some critics(批评家)did not like them.

This troubled Thomas Jefferson. He was also a naturalist,as well as a farmer,an inventor,a historian,a writer and a politician(政治家).He had seen the natural wonders of Europe. To him, they were no more important than those of the New World.

In 1872,a famous American word expert decided that the time had come to kill this word.He said,"Belittle shouldn't become English. And more critical writers of America, like those of Britain, feel no need of it."
