The Fitting-in of Suzy Khan
The first time I saw Suzy Khan, I knew I had to help her. She was really small for her age of 12. The boy in my class often about her and laughed their heads off. She would open a book, pretending to read, with tears dropping on the open page.
All I knew was that she was an orphan (孤儿) from Africa. She had just been adopted by a family in town who that the best way for her to learn American ways of life was to be with american kids. I looked down at this girl and promised myself that somehow I would help her.
But how could I help her in with us? There had to be a .
One day, when I went into the classroom, I saw that Suzy had her geography book to a picture of a train, and in her notebook, she had made a(n) (7) copy.
I was surprised and thought that she could do something in the coming (8) show. So, I took her to see the art teacher, Miss Parker, and showed her what Suzy had . “why, it’s wonderful,” said Miss Parker, who then showed us a poster she had painted the talent show. “I need more of these, but I just don’t have enough . Could you help me, Suzy?”
On the day of the talent show, Suzy’s were everywhere ---- all over the hall and all over the school, each one different.
“And finally,” said Mr Brown, the schoolmaster, at the end of the show, “we have a (n) award. I’m sure you’ve all noticed the wonderful posters.” Everyone nodded. “One of our own students them.”
I could hear everyone whispering. “Who in our school could draw well?”
Mr. Brown waited a while before saying, “ this student worked so hard on the posters, she deserves a ,too. Our mystery(神秘) artist is our new student ---- Suzy Khan!”
Mr. Brown thanked her for all the wonderful posters and gave her a professional artist’s set. “Thank you,” she cried.
I , at that time when I was looking at her excited face, she’d probably never anything in her whole life.
Everyone started to their hands. Suzy Khan gave them a shy smile and the applause was defening. I knew then Suzy was going to be all right.

In 1982, Steven Callahan was crossing the Atlantic alone in his sailboat when it struck something and sank. He got into a life boat, but his supplies were . His chances of surviving were small. when three fishermen found him 76 days later, he was alive —much than he was when he started, but alive.
His of how he survived is fascinating. His cleverness —how he to catch fish, how he evaporated (蒸发) sea water to fresh water—is very interesting.
But the thing that my eye was how he managed to keep himself going when all hope seemed lost, and there seemed no in continuing the struggle. He was starved and worn-out. Giving up would have seemed the only possible choice.
When people these kinds of circumstances, they do something with their minds that gives them the courage to keep going. Many people in desperate circumstances in or go mad. Something the survivors do with their thoughts helps them find the courage to carry on difficulties.
“I tell myself I can it,” wrote Callahan in his book. “Compared to what others have been through, I’m fortunate. I tell myself these things over and over, up courage…”
I wrote that down after I read it. It me as something important. And I’ve told myself the same thing when my own goals seemed off or when my problems seemed too terrible. And every time I’ve said it, I have always come back to my .
The truth is, our circumstances are only bad to something better. But others have been through the much worse, that is, in comparison with what others have been through, you’re fortunate. Tell this to yourself over and over again, and it will help you through the rough situations with a little more courage.

There was once a group of young people searching everywhere for happiness but what they got was only annoyance, grief and misery.
So they Socrates for advice on where happiness . But giving any answers, Socrates asked them to help with building a first. The group of guys had to the task, laying aside their own business of seeking happiness. It took them a long time to cut down a tall tree, gouging out (挖空) the center. Through painstaking effort, they made a canoe out of the tree. They launched the canoe into a river, and then together in it, singing with .
Socrates asked, “My children, do you have happiness now?” They answered in chorus: “We be happier!” Socrates , “That’s it! you are too busy pursuing something to notice anything bitter, happiness will occur.”

We may have to pain in our daily life and in the process of happiness. Sometimes we tend to look for happiness in things, like a new car, clothes, etc. True long term happiness, however, comes from within our and spirit. So why not turn suffering into life, and tears into the light in your heart? Only in this way can we make it through and find true happiness.
So my dear friends, just remember happiness is a state of mind and a matter of , and I you all a life of happiness.

As he was ,a couple of old boys stopped by to give a/an . “What are you doing?” asked one of the .“ I want to dig a hole all the way through the earth!” the boy excitedly. The older boys began to ,telling him that digging a hole all the way through the earth was . After a while, the boy picked up a jar(罐子). He it to the visitors. It was full of all kinds of stones and insects. Then he said calmly and ,“Maybe I can’t finish digging all the way through the earth, look at what I’ve found during this period! ”
The boy’s goal was far too ,but it did cause his to go on. And that is what a goal is --to cause us to move in the we have chosen, in other words, to cause us to keep working!
Not goal will be fully achieved. Not every job will up with a success. Not every dream will come true. But when you short of your aim, maybe you can say, “Yes, but look at I’ve found along the way! So many wonderful things have my life because I tried to do something!” is in the digging that life is lived. It is a joy on the that really makes sense.
