High school students have become the largest age group seeking plastic surgery procedures (整形手术) in China. The majority of these procedures are cosmetic(美容的). Many high school students and graduates are looking to improve their looks to help ease the job search, according to a survey.
Despite this trend, not all plastic surgeons in China agree that the younger patients are emotionally ready to make a wise decision on cosmetic surgery. Hu Xiaogen, a doctor who works at the plastic surgery department of China-Japan Friendship Hospital, told a newspaper that one 16-year-old student canceled student canceled an operation just as he was about to anesthetize(麻醉) her. She was afraid the injection(注射) into her eyelids would be too painful.
There are also safety risks when it comes to operating on younger patients. Dr. Hu says that women wait until they reach the age of 20 and men should wait until they are 25. Before these ages, bones are still growing and there are higher risks that come with operations.
In the end, Dr. Hu believes that patients should not rely on plastic surgery to further their careers, especially as actors and actresses. “Improving all-round capabilities is the correct way forward for a successful career. Appearance is not everything.” he said.
