I turned around to find a little old lady with warm smile. She said, “Hi, handsome. My name is Rose. I’m eighty-seven years old.”
“Why are you in university at such a YOUNG age?” I asked. She replied, “I’m here to meet a rich husband, get married, have coupe of kids, and then retire and travel.”
I knew she was joking. I was curious(好奇) what might have encouraged her to be taking on this challenge at her age.
“I always dreamed of having a university education and now I’m getting one!” she told me. We became friends. Every day we would talk nonstop after class. I always enjoyed listening to this “time machine” as she shared her wisdom(智慧) and experience with me. And Rose easily made friends wherever she went.
At the end of the term we invited Rose to make a little speech. She cleared her throat and began, “We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. I’ve learned a few secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You’ve got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die.”

There is no doubt that mothers play an important leading role in the lives of their children. But what about a father's role? I believe that fathers play just as important a role as mothers.
Fathers give us support. They are the shore(岸)we swim to when our arms and legs feel increasingly tired. They are the strength we rely on (依靠)as we take our first steps into the world. Fathers can be gentle and powerful, but they probably have the simplest love we ever know.
_______, the father is their first hero and possibly the only man they will ever feel comfortable loving.
For daughters, the father is the first man they admire and the first man whose eyes shine with happiness when they look at them. He is the first man to fall in love with them.
For mothers, the father of our children is the person we can believe in to watch over the babies as closely as we would. We are protectedin the knowledge of their love. A father is the person on the planet with whom we can do whatever we want ... one who will be just as interested and never feel bored in the face of our devotion.
Without fathers, we wouldn't be mums. I would like to thank them from all our hearts for this honor and for being our partners in the business of raising children. From the passage, we can know the writer is a_______.

The home of the future won’t be completely different and we will be living in houses and flats as we do today. But people will want to shape their homes to match their dreams. No two homes will be the same. People will be able to buy “house materials” containing moveable walls, doors and windows. They will put together the different parts to create the home they want.
Many jobs that we do today will disappear, others will still be done but will change and new jobs will be created. Skilled workers such as builders, gardeners and electricians won’t disappear because machines can’t take the place of them. We will still have teachers because students need human contact. But they will be using modern technology in class more and students will be working more from home.
Space holidays will develop in the future, but these holidays won’t be for everyone because they won’t be cheap. Short space trips will develop first, then hotels will move around the earth where it will be possible to have a longer vacation. By the end of the next century, there will be holiday centers on the moon with things needed for families.
There will be no paper in the future. Instead, there will be e-paper which people will be able to use over and over again. This will develop in order to protect nature. E-newspapers and e-magazines will take the place of traditional newspapers and magazines and we will download information and news articles from the Internet every day onto our re-useable paper.
As we know, the earth is going to disappear sometime in the future. This isn’t going to happen tomorrow but scientists say that it will happen in five billion years. We will have to find another home. At sometime in the future far away, either we stay on the earth and die with it, or we leave and move to another plant. There won’t be any other choice.

Taking away a city’s rubbish is a big job. Every day trucks come into a city to collect it. Most rubbish is made up of things we can’t eat or use. If we kept these things we would soon have a mountain of rubbish.
In some cities the rubbish is collected and taken outside of the city to a dump(垃圾站). Often the city dump is placed where the ground is low or there is a big hole. The kitchen rubbish is broken into small pieces and sent into the sewage system. The sewage system takes away the used water from toilets, bathtubs(澡盆) and other places.
To keep mice and flies away, some earth is used to cover the newly dumped rubbish. Later, grass may be planted on the rubbish-filled land. Finally, a house or a school may be built there, and then you’d never know that this had once been an old rubbish dump.
In other cities the rubbish is burnt in special places. The fire burns everything but the metal. Sometimes the metal can be used again in factories where things are made of metal. The food parts of rubbish are put in special piles where they slowly change into something called humus(腐殖土), which looks like black earth. It is rich with kinds of things that feed plants and help make them grow. You can most probably read the passage in _______.
