Hundreds of years ago,a Roman army came north from England to make war on Scotland. The Scots,a brave people, loved their country very much. They fought hard to drive the enemy out of Scotland, but there were too many Romans. It looked as if the Romans would win.
One night, the leader of Scots marched his soldiers to the top of a hill. “We will rest here tonight,my men,”he said. “Tomorrow we will fight one more battle. We must win or we will die.”
They were all very tired,so they ate their supper quickly and fell asleep. There were four guards on duty, but they, too, were very tired, and one by one, also fell asleep.
The Romans were not asleep. Quickly they gathered at the foot of the hill. Slowly they climbed up the hillside, taking care not to make a sound. Closer and closer they came to the sleeping Scots. They were almost at the top. A few minutes more, the war would be over. Suddenly, one of them put his foot on a thistle(蓟). He cried out and his sudden cry woke the Scots. In a moment, they were on their feet and ready for battle. The fighting was hard but it did not last long. The Scots wiped out the Romans and saved their country.

It seems like technology is everywhere.Computers and smart phones are at the center of almost everything we do.They constantly(持续地)require our attention. We text our friends with them during the day, sleep with them by our beds and check our messages as soon as we wake up.

In the future, technology will no longer be interruptingus all the time.Instead,we will use calm technology which was first developed by scientist Mark Weiser in the 1970s.In his opinion, calm technology works quietly but constantly. We know it is there, but we don't pay much attention to it According to Mark, the beat technology should be invisible(隐形的)and let you live your life.

We already use many different types of calm technology in our everyday lives.Do you have a smoke alarm in your house? That smoke alarm is always there, checking the air for smoke and quietly keeping you safe.It only reminds you it's there when you've burnt your bread!Or there may be lights in your home or school. When somebody passes in front of their sensors(传感器),the lights turn on.You don't think about this type of technology until you see the light go on.

In the future,we can imagine our houses will use calm technology to open the curtains for us in the morning,to tum down the heat when we leave,or even to choose the best music for our mood The minute we walk through the door, our house will respond by turning on the lights and music, and perhaps even starting to prepare our dinner!

The summer vacation is a time to enjoy a change from the school year. It's a good chance to work on different activities that you don't have much time to do during the rest of the year.

We asked about 2,000 people what they would do during the summer vacation. Most of the survey takersagreed that the summer vacation was a break from homework and they could relax.

Alexis said,"At school,I'm really tired,so during the summer vacation I can read books and do many ou tdoor activities."

Amy is in high school. After school, she sometimes works in a café.She told us,"It's a chance to relax after a hard school year﹣sleep more, and see my friends more."

We also asked them if they would be too busy or kind of bored.About half(52%)of the survey﹣takers said they would be busy during the summer vacation but still have time to relax. And thatis exactly how it should be.

But not everyone said their summer vacation would be the right balance(平衡)between being busy and relaxing. Many thought that they would be too bored.

How bored or busy people feel during the summer vacation depends on how old they are.Survey﹣takers in their early teens were likely(可能的)to be bored.Among them,40% said they would be bored and only 10% thought they would be too busy.
