Every day as I drove through town, I saw a one-legged man going through the dustbins next to McDonalds looking for food. It was only a month Christmas, starting to get cold and I could not help him.
So I bought a brush, loads of bread, cans of fish, and added a blanket and sweatshirts. I made a box up like a present and went this man. I saw him hobbling (蹒跚) away from the dustbins. I pulled over, took the box and to him. I said, “I would like to give you a Christmas present, and there are some food here and some things you might be able to use.”
He sidestepped around me and said, “No, thank you, I just had lunch. I don’t need .”
Then he hobbled on down the sidewalk, me standing there in tears. I took the box down to a little shop that gave things out to the and homeless and told them what had happened and asked that they should give the to someone who could use it. The person there told me not to be and they thought my feelings were hurt as I was crying. I told her I was not crying for me but for him because what I had done his dignity(尊严) by treating him like a person in need. I was so .
A few years later I was able to in St. Anthony’s Dining Room in San Francisco. These people had to stand in for up to 6 hours to receive the food they could get. We took one tray of food at a time, and treated them they were in a restaurant ordering a meal they were paying for and when we took our , we would sit down with one of them and talk and our food with someone if we had too much.
From my own experience, I have learned a great lesson. help is sometimes harder than giving it.

It was a rainy day. I was riding on a bus downtown to go to . I was sitting next to a man in a business suit and didn’t much attention until we both got off at the same stop and walked to the same to get a morning paper.
The man running the stand was having a bad day. He was and unsmiling as we purchased our papers, which served to only more gloom(抑郁) to my day. The businessman caught my eye and . He then continued to smile and thanked the newsstand owner for the and for being open on such a morning to make sure we were able to get our papers. , he expressed his appreciation for something most of us would take for granted.
The newsman only with a cold expression. The businessman then pleasantly wished him a pleasant day. As we , I asked this man why he had to be pleasantto the newsman when he obviously didn’t care about and didn’t respond to his expression of and friendliness. The businessman smiled at me and said, “Why would I let someone else what I say and what I feel or what kind of day I’m going to have?”
We then to go to our respective work places. To this day, I don’t know anything about that business man. But I’ve never the words he said or the way his smile seemed like a ray of light on a gloomy day. That was a good deed 25 years ago, but the this had on my life has lasted. I never had a to thank him personally, but the way in which I choose to look at life as a result of those words is his legacy (遗赠) to me and my thanks to him.
We cannot control people and situations that come to us, but we can always control our response to them. And in such decisions lie our control and personal power to make a positive difference. And it’s something anyone and everyone can do.

Coming home from school that dark winter day so long ago, I was filled with excitement of having the weekend off. But I was into stillness by what I saw. A week later Mother took a job selling dry goods at half the salary the radio station . “It’s a job I can do, though,” she said simply. But the evening practice on the old green typewriter continued. I had a very feeling now when I passed her door at night and heard her away across the paper. I knew there was something more going on there than a woman learning to type.
