As China’s influence grows, many students in the US are working hard to learn Chinese. Parents and education experts (专家) in the US think Chinese speakers may have greater chances.
The number of schools that teach Chinese has grown. Ten years ago, only about 300 schools in the US had Chinese lessons. Today, about 1,600 schools teach Chinese.
Lomond Elementary School (小学) in Ohio is one of them. Each week, all students in grades one through five have a one-hour Chinese class. They learn the language through songs, games and lots of talking.
“We’re trying to make students interested in the language,” teacher James told Times for Kids. “We think it’s really important that all children receive these lessons,” he says. “We’d like to do even more.”
“Schools are looking to the future,” says Nancy, a US education expert. “China is becoming a really powerful country. Young people should not only know the language but understand the culture.” Students may not be thinking about the future, but they think learning Chinese language and culture is fun.
“We wish we could go to China one day.” said Karl and his classmate, Walt, from Miami.
More than 40 million foreigners around the world are studying Chinese. About 50,000 people in the US are learning the language. Chinese has become the second most spoken foreign language in the US after Spanish.At present, many American students are learning Chinese because________.

Poor Alice was very unhappy. "What a wonderful garden!" she said to herself. "I'd like to be out there - not in this dark room. Why can't I get smaller?" It was already a very strange day, and Alice was beginning to think that anything was possible.

"What a strange feeling!" said Alice. "I think I'm getting smaller and smaller every second."
And she was. A few minutes later she was only 25 centimeters high. "And now," she said happily, "I can get through the little door into that beautiful garden."
She ran at once to the door. When she got there, she remembered that the Iime gold key was back on the glass table. She ran back to the table for it, but of course, she was now much too small! There was the key, high above her, on top of the table. She tried very hard to climb up the table leg. but she could not do it.
At last, tired and unhappy, Alice sat down on the floor and cried. But after a while she spoke to herself angrily.
"Come now," she said, "Stop crying at once. What's the use of crying?" She was a strange child, and often talked to herself like this.
Soon she saw a little glass box near her on the floor. She opened it. and found a very small cake with the words EATME on it.
Nothing could surprise Alice now. "Well, I'll eat it," she said. "If I get taller, I can take the key off the table. And if I get smaller, I can get under the door. One way or another. I'll get into the garden. So it doesn't matter what happens!" She went on eating, but nothing happened.

My favorite sweater grew too small.
I love that sweater best of all.
My grandma made it when I was three.
She made that sweater just for me.
I picked the yarn（纱线）, a special blue.
The color of bluebells, wet with dew(露珠).
When I was three I was very small.
But now I'm five and much too tall.
I have a new jacket now that's green.
So I gave my sweater to our cat Queen.
Queen just had kittens out in the shed(小屋).
My favorite sweater is now their bed.
