New genetic analysis has revealed that many Amazon tree species are likely to survive human-made climate warming in the coming century, contrary to previous findings that temperature increases would cause them to die out. A study, 1 in the latest edition of Ecology and Evolution, reveals the 2 age of some Amazonian tree species -- more than 8 million years -- and 3 shows that they have survived previous periods as warm as many of the global warming imagined periods 4 for the year 2100.
The authors write that, having survived warm periods in the past, the trees will 5 survive future warming, provided there are no other major environmental changes. 6 extreme droughts and forest fires will impact Amazonia as temperatures 7 , the trees will stand the direct impact of higher temperatures. The authors 8 that as well as reducing greenhouse gas emissions to minimize the risk of drought and fire, conservation policy should remain 9 on preventing deforestation(采伐森林)for agriculture and mining.
The study disagrees with other recent researches which predicted tree species’ extinctions 10 relatively small increases in global average air temperatures.
Study co-author Dr Simon Lewis (UCL Geography) said the 11 were good news for Amazon tree species, but warned that drought and over-exploitation of the forest remained major 12 to the Amazon’s future.
Dr Lewis said: “The past cannot be compared directly with the future. while tree species seem likely to 13 higher air temperatures than today, the Amazon forest is being transformed for agriculture and 14 , and what remains is being degraded by logging, and increasingly split up by fields and roads.
“Species will not move as freely in today’s Amazon as they did in previous warm periods, when there was no human 15 . Similarly, today’s climate change is extremely fast, making comparisons with slower changes in the past 16 .”
“With a clearer 17 of the relative risks to the Amazon forest, we 18 that direct human impacts -- such as forest clearances for agriculture or mining -- should remain a key point of conservation policy. We also need more aggressive 19 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in order to make minimum the risk of drought and fire impacts and 20 the future of most Amazon tree species.”

We were taken up a hill to a place of 6 where we were welcomed by a family who told us that we could stay as 7 as we needed to. Among all this death and 8 , these people were trying to help us! We were shown to the local Mosque where hundreds of locals were cooking, collecting and distributing food and supplies for those less 9 . In the three days we were waiting to leave, we saw many examples of ordinary Sri Lankans, many of whom had lost friends, 10 and livelihoods(生计,谋生方式), trying to help others who were worse off. It was a very moving experience.
We have since been 11 the family who took us in and they are saying that what their country needs most urgently is practical help, doctors, nurses and medicines, helping to 12 roads and rebuilding electricity and water supplies. These people would have done anything to help us, it is time for the British Government to do more to help them.

“Where’s the star?” I asked. It was my grandmother’s 41 . As we emptied box after box and found no star, my grandmother’s eyes 42 with tears. Grandfather had given it to Grandmother fifty years ago. Now, on her first Christmas without 43 , the star was gone, too.
“Let’s 44 in the closet where the tree was,” my sister Donna said. We 45 under beds and over shelves, inside and outside 46 we had exhausted every possibility. We could see Grandmother was 47 , although she tried not to show it. By now, it was 48 outside, and time for bed, as Santa would soon be here.
The next morning, my sisters and I 49 early to see what Santa had left under the tree. After breakfast, the family sat together to 50 presents. “The last gift is to Grandmother from Grandfather.” Father said, in a puzzled voice.
“From who?” There was 51 in my grandmother’s voice.
“I found that 52 in the closet when we got the tree down,” Mother explained.
My grandmother opened it. Her face lit up when she pulled out a(n) 53 golden star. There was a note attached. Her voice trembled(颤抖)as she read it:
Don’t be 54 with me, dear. I broke your star while putting away the tree. Thought it was time for a new one, I hope it brings you as much 55 as the first one. Merry Christmas.

The town I live in is about to put cameras at all traffic lights to catch people who run red lights. It 1 me of how many people I’ve seen who take the yellow light as a 2 to go faster. I also can’t understand why people don’t move when the traffic light has turned green. Above all, there are those 3 situations in which someone doesn’t even 4 that the light turns red, and just keeps going. That is why so many 5 happen! All these situations make me 6 the purpose of traffic lights.
7 ,it’s even more frightening to imagine letting people make their own decisions at 8 crossroads. Do the biggest cars get to go first? Who decides who goes next? So I guess I do like the idea of a system to 9 traffic. And I’ll do my best to 10 the traffic rules: to go, to be cautious, and to stop when I’m 11 to.
It occurs to me that my 12 have done much the same for me 13 teaching me how to live. They have given me many 14 lights: to get along well with others, to listen and talk to them, to help others, and to 15 with joy and purpose. They have also given me some red lights 16 my life goes astray(误入歧途): not to be greedy, to keep my temper, and to control my desires. And there 17 have been some yellow caution lights: to watch how much I drink, to keep control of my behavior, and to 18 school regularly and work hard.
If I obey these rules, my life will be as 19 as it can be. Just as I’m wise to pay attention to the traffic lights when I’m walking across the street, I’m wise to pay attention to the“ 20 signals”given to me by my parents.
