David was a small boy in ragged clothes. I had often wondered what kind of home life David had, and what kind of mother could send her son to school     (dress) so inappropriately for the cold winter months. But something made David special. He always stayed after school     (straighten) chairs and mop the floor. He would just simply smile and ask what else he could do, then thank me for  (let ) him stay and slowly head for home.
On the last day of school before Christmas holiday break, I saw David    (quiet) standing by my desk.“I have something for you.” he said and (pull )from behind his back a small box. Handing it to me, he said anxiously, “  it.” I took the box from him, thanked him and slowly unwrapped it. I lifted the lid and to my surprise saw    . I looked at David’s smiling face and said, “The box is nice, David,     it’s empty.”“Oh no, it isn’t.” said David. “It’s full of love. My mum told me before she died that love was something you couldn’t see or touch unless you know it’s there.”
Tears filled my eyes as I looked at the proud dirty face that I       (rarely give) attention to. After that Christmas, David and I became good friends and I never forgot     meaning behind the little empty box set on my desk.

Over the years I’ve been teaching the( Britain)kids about a simple but powerful concept— the ant philosophy(哲 学 ) , an ( amaze)four-part philosophy.
First, ants never quit. If they’re heading somewhere and you try to stop them, they’ll climb over, they’ll climb under, or they’ll climb around. They never quit( look) for a way to get where they ( suppose )to go! Second, ants think about winter and summer. They are always gathering in their winter food in the middle of summer and they are making( prepare)for the long cold winter. So you have to think about storms in summer ; think about rocks you enjoy the sand and sun. Third, ants think about summer all winter. During the winter, they remind ,“ This won’ t last long and we’ll soon be out of here. ”On the first warm day, the ants are out. If it ( turn)cold again, they’ll dive back down. But they come out again if it is warm. Last, how much will an ant gather during the summer to prepare for the winter? All that it ( possible) can.you can learn from the ant philosophy is: Never give up, look ahead, stay positive and do all you can.

“Remember, your father is only one year (old) than you.” That was Mum’s usual excuse when Dad said the wrong things or did something (fool).
Dad quitted drinking exactly one year before I was born. He joined a group of other people. He said they (stop) drinking, too. I loved my dad I hated the way his weekly meetings took him away me. It seemed that they were more important to him than I was. But with my birthday coming up I thought Dad would make an(except). “Can’t you miss it just this time? Saturday is my birthday!” I begged him but(refuse). He said “I am chairing the meeting this Saturday. We will have your party on Sunday.”
Saturday evening I sat on my bed, (feel) sorry for myself. Dad started to leave, then paused and said, “Why notcome with me together tonight? It’s an open meeting. All are welcome”. would I do at a meeting? But maybe I needed to see why something Dad every week mattered so much.
After we arrived, Dad announced the theme of the meeting was going to be gratitude. He told his story about giving up smoking. Later, a man (call) Dave also told his story. Only then did I know it was Dad that saved his life from drinking. Showing up week after week and meeting with people, Dad was changing lives. Shame washed over me.
