【原创】Noah McQueen is part of "My Brother's Keeper," a White House program aimed at young men of color.
His teen years have been rough, and include several arrests and a short period of being in prison. But last week, he was at the White House talking with President Obama.
"Growing up, I didn't have a stable household. I attended eight schools in three years," McQueen says.
McQueen adds his dad lives down the street from him, but he doesn't really have a relationship with him.
"That's one of the things we have in common," Obama says. "As I get older, I start reflecting on how that affected me. How do you think that affected you?"
"I think I learn right and wrong on my own terms." McQueen says.
"Obviously you've straightened yourself out and become successful as a black man. " Obama says. " But did you feel pressure to look back on the way you once acted?"
"Definitely, there's always pressure." McQueen says, "People will say, 'You are the success story,' but it's hard to always make the right decision and always be the leader."
"You shouldn't feel like you can't make mistakes.” Obama says. “You've discovered this strength inside yourself. If you stay true to that voice that clearly knows what's right and what's wrong, sometimes you're going to mess up, but you can steer back and keep going."
About his future plan, McQueen says" I want to do education because I want to work with kids," "You know, to see the beginnings, and to see where I was, to see the exact same kid doing the exact same thing. And it's like, we owe it to everyone and ourselves to come back and change that. That's like our duty.
"Yeah, and Noah, I just want to say how proud I am of you, man," Obama says. "It's not an easy thing to do what you've done. And I think you give others a lot of confidence and a sense of what's possible for them. And that makes me real proud. I know you're going to do great things."What doe the underlined words “steer back” possibly mean?

The U.S. government has repeatedly made it clear that it would welcome China’s entrance into the world arena as a power. However, a series of issues since the beginning of this year, particularly Washington's stance on the U.S.-South Korean joint military exercises and the South China Sea issue, have made the world think: Is the United States ready to recognize China as a power on the world stage?
It is easier said than done for the United States to adapt itself to China's development. Lip service is far from enough to boost the development of Sino-U.S. relations. If Washington cannot find a way to recognize and accept China's peaceful rise onto the world stage, bilateral(双边的) ties will be like a roller coaster full of ups and downs. However, no one would like to see the negative effects rocky relations would bring to China, the United States and possibly to the world as a whole.
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has urged China to play a greater role in solving the world's economic, environmental and political problems. She said global issues could not be solved by the United States or China alone, but without participation of the two countries, no problems would likely be solved. Washington has realized that the United States' global interest can be maintained only through changing the way it deals with China.
The Obama administration released positive signals in its relations with China, which have been interpreted as the United States showing its intention to change the traditional strategy of engagement and containment(遏制). As a matter of fact, the general direction of Sino-U.S. relations provides a foundation on which the United States can base its foreign policies and is more complicated than an adjustment in real conditions. Issues such as arms sales to Taiwan, Google censorship, RMB exchange rates as well as finger-pointing about economic responsibility show Washington still seems confused and inpatient about relations with China.
The relationship between China and the United States is the most important and complicated bilateral relationship in the world this century. The development of Sino-U.S. relations will affect world peace and stability, especially in the Asia-Pacific region. Ian Bremmer, an American political scientist specializing in U.S. foreign policy, said, "America and China will have more than ever to gain from closer political and commercial
ties, and must take steps to avoid a Cold War, or worse
."
In that circumstance, the United States needs both wisdom and determination to recognize and accept China, a country that is totally different from its own, as a power on the world stage.
The underlined word stance in the first paragraph probably means.
A.information | B.opinion | C.ignorance | D.criticism |
Why does the US have to change the way it deals with China?
A.The US welcomes Chin’s entrance into the world arena. |
B.The US hopes that China will get more powerful. |
C.Only in this way can China meet all of its demands. |
D.Only in this way can its global interest be maintained. |
Ian Bremmer thinks both America and China will benefit more from.
A.a cold war. | B.keeping patient | C.better cooperation | D.developing economy |
Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?

China launched its fifth Beidou orbiter into space on Sunday morning, moving it one step closer to its goal of building a navigation(导航) and positioning satellite network.
The Beidou, or Compass, system is being built to rival the US-developed GPS, the European Union's Galileo and Russia's Global Navigation Satellite System. It can allow travelers, drivers and military officials to know their locations.
The fifth orbiter was launched on top of a Long March 3A carrier rocket at 5:30 am on Sunday from Xichang of Southwest China's Sichuan province.
It is the third Compass satellite launched this year, following launches on Jan 17 and June 2.
The short interval of less than two months since the last launch demonstrated that "the country is stepping into a busy period of launching the Compass satellites", an unnamed official in charge of the project said last month.
The first two orbiters were launched in 2007 and 2009 respectively.
Sun Jiadong, the Beidou program's chief designer, said on June 21 in a TV interview that China would launch 13 to 15 Beidou navigation satellites into orbit by 2012 to form a network that provides regional service covering the neighboring areas.
And in about 10 years, the network would be expanded to include more than 30 satellites covering the globe, he said.
The system is a crucial part of the country's space infrastructure for providing navigation and positioning services in transportation, meteorology, pe
troleum prospecting, forest fire monitoring, disaster forecasting, telecommunications and public security.
In addition, a global positioning system is crucial to any country's national security and defense, said Ran Chengqi, an official in charge of the program, referring to the fact that the US initially built its GPS system for military purposes.
It is unimaginable for China to go without such a system, he said.
Earlier reports cited(引用) Song Xiaojun, a Beijing-based military expert, as saying that 90 percent of the world's current weapons systems need a global positioning system. This news report was probably released.
A.in January, 2010 | B.in June, 2010 | C.in July, 2010 | D.in August, 2010 |
The Compass System is expected to finally coverin the future.
A.China | B.China and its neigh boring areas |
C.Asia, Europe and Oceania | D.the earth |

C.drivers to reach their destinations easily | D.hunters to find wild animals smoothly |
Most 23-year-olds have not done enough in life to be worthy of having their own documentary(纪录片)
Most 23-year-olds aren't LeBron James.
The NBA superstar, who recently won gold at the Beijing Olympics, has just released More Than a Game. It is a documentary that follows his rise to stardom (明星地位) and how he and four childhood friends overcame long odds to win a national championship in high school.
Combining footage (镜头) taken during James' career at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron, Ohio, US, along with one-on-one interviews by writer/director Kris Belman, home videos, and personal family photographs, the film is about much more than basketball. At its core (核心) is a story of friendship, loyalty and love.
"We set out with a goal as kids and we wanted to accomplish that someway, somehow by using basketball as a tool, not knowing that it was going to create other opportunities for us," James said. "We didn't know it was going to create a brotherhood and trust. We grew from kids into young men."
While James is the star, his former teammates, Dru Joyce III, Sian Cotton, Willie McGee and Romeo Travis, play a major role in the film.
Their journey began together as 8-year-old boys, winds through years traveling all over America playing in basketball tournaments and finishes in their senior season at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School.
At the time, Belman was a college film student. He set out to film James and his friends' season as his final school project, a 10-minute documentary. But after gaining the trust of the players and coach Dru Joyce, Belman spent two months filming and eventually teamed with producer Harvey Mason Jr to the full-length feature.
James hopes the film will inspire youngsters (年轻人).
"We set out with a goal when we were eight and we accomplished it when we were 18," he said. "It's a great story and I wanted to get it out to kids that have a dream, that they should continue to go after it, believe in it and live it if they want to accomplish something."LeBron James achieved his goal set at 8 when.

A Good Teacher is a Strict Teacher One of the most important parts in the healthy development of a
child is played by education. But the way in which education is
understood has changed completely, as we must not forget that
the severe and unfeeling way of bringing up a child in the past
was primarily based on cruel grounding(基础)and strict
rules that were supposed to create accomplished individuals, the typical gentlemen. Nowdays,
society is much more open-minded and it does not put a great value on being strict, although this
doesn’t mean that opinions regarding this subject do not differ.
On the one hand, there are also people who believe that there has got to be a bound between
teacher and student if any satisfying results are awaited. Luckily for us, more and more teachers are
understanding this fact and are doing their best to get over the strict rules and get in touch with us.
My opinion is that only by having a friendly attitude and accepting other opinions, especially
those of your pupils, you are truly able to do your job at high standards. However, this does not
mean that a teacher shouldn’t be a bit more rough when he feels that things are getting out of hand.
All in all, I must say that a good teacher is the teacher that has the ability to be kind and strict at the
same time, thus achieving to gain his students respect and interest. The aim of education in the past was to.
A.create perfect persons | B.create open-minded persons |
C.bring up a child | D.build a cruel grounding |
According to the passage, the narrow-minded people think.
A.a pupil is always interested in what he is learning |
B.a pupil himself will improve his studies |
C.children should be made to study |
D.children don’t like a rough hand |
The underlined word “job” in the last paragraph can be replaced by.
A.controlling | B.teaching | C.learning | D.punishing |
The author thinks a good teacher should be.
A.kind and strict | B.skilled and clever |
C.rough and cruel | D.friendly and practical |
It can be inferred from the passage that.
A.society is much more open-minded and being strict is out date |
B.as long as the teachers are strict with students, the students will certainly get good marks |
C.most people are in favor of strict teachers because they have strict grounding and strict rules |
D.if we expect students to develop in a healthy way, the good relationship between teachers and students is important |
