One very cold wet night, there was a knock on my front door. A young man, wet from to foot, explained that he had run out of petrol and had left his wife and two children behind in his car.
After I had a can with petrol, I drove him back to his car. Once his car had started, I suggested he me. Back to the gas station, I turned on the heater so that it is nice and . While the young man was drying his wet clothes, the little ones played and ran around. I prepared bread for the children and hot coffee for the . Before they left, the young man asked me how much he owed me and I told him that the petrol pump (加油泵) had $15. He offered to pay “call-out fee”, but I wouldn’t accept it.
About a month , I received a from a large bus company. turned out that the young man was its general manager, the most person in the company. In his letter, he thanked me again and me that, from then on, all their buses would be filled with petrol at my station. his case, a little kindness was rewarded with a huge benefit.

The Making of a Surgeon
How does a doctor recognize the point in time when he is finally a “surgeon”? As my year as chief resident (进修医生) drew to a close, I asked myself this question 36 more than one occasion.
The answer, I concluded, was 37.When you can say to yourself, “There is no surgical patient I cannot treat competently, treat just 38 or better than any other surgeon”-- then, and not until then, you are 39 a surgeon.I was 40 that point.
41 , for example, the emergency situations that we met almost every night. The first few months of the year I had 42 the ringing of the telephone.I knew it meant another critical decision to be 43.Often, after I had told Walt or Larry what to do in a particular 44 , I'd have trouble getting back to sleep.I'd 45 all the facts of the case and, often, wonder 46 I had made a poor decision.More than once at two or three in the 47 , after lying awake for an hour, I’d get out of 48 , dress and drive to the hospital to see the patient myself. It was the only 49 I could find the 50 of mind I needed to relax.
Now, in the last month of my residency, 51 was no longer a problem.Sometimes I still couldn’t be sure of my decision, but I had learned to 52 this as a constant problem for a surgeon.I knew that with my knowledge and experience, any decision I'd made was bound to be a 53 one.It was a nice feeling.
This all sounds conceited (自负的) and I guess it is -- 54 a surgeon needs conceit. He needs it to encourage him in trying moments when he's bothered by the 55 and uncertainties that are part of the practice of medicine. He has to feel that he's as good as and probably better than any other surgeon in the world.Call it conceit -- call it self-confidence; whatever it was, I had it.

I work as a volunteer(志愿者)for an organization that helps the poor in Haiti. Recently I took my son Barrett there for a week, hoping to 36 him.

When leaving for home, Barrett even offered to stay 54 as a volunteer. My insides suddenly felt struck. This 55 achieved all I’d expected. Soon he will celebrate his 18th birthday. He’ll be a man.

It was a cold winter’s night when I stopped for gas on my way home from work. I was tired and had a slight 36 .
I worked in a 37 doctor’s office and this was one of those days when the unexpected happened, making the schedule run 38 than usual. It seemed I was going to be late 39 home and my husband, being the 40 person, would be ready to pronounce me late once again. Maybe 41 I hurried, I could still make it home.
I was heading inside to 42 for my gas when I noticed an older couple at the counter. I heard them asking for 43 to the local hospital. It was the same hospital that I had just 44a few minutes ago.

A look of 49 crossed the woman’s face.
“I’m going right by there,” I said, which wasn’t a(an) 50 since I had just made up my mind to do 51 that.
I got in my car and began the journey back. I was trying to watch to be sure they were right 52 me. It took only fifteen minutes to get there as rush hour traffic was beginning to 53 . I felt better than I had all day and my headache was nearly gone.
Later, as I arrived home, my husband 54 , “So you aren’t ever late any more.”
I said, “Sometimes it’s 55 to be late.”
