The Winner’s Guide to Success
How do successful people think? What helps them to make success? To find out the answers, an American scholar recently visited some of the most successful people in America.
Be responsible for yourself
Sometimes you may want to blame others for your failure to get ahead. You’re saying, “You have more control over my life than I do.”
Live life “on purpose”
Almost all successful people live life “on purpose”— they are doing what they believe they should and want to do. When you live your life on purpose, you’ll try your best to do your job or study as well as you can. You love what you do and you can find pleasure in what you do.
Write a plan
It is very difficult trying to get what you want without a good plan. A good plan is like a map to you. Without this “map”, you may waste your time, money and also your energy; while with the “map” you’ll enjoy the “trip” and get what you want in the shortest possible time.
Be willing to pay the price
Nothing great is easy to get. So you must be ready to work hard — even harder than you have ever done. If you are not willing to pay the price, you won’t get anything valuable.
Never give up When you are doing something, you must tell yourself again and again: Giving up is worse than failure because failure can be the mother of success, but giving up means the death of hope.
Once an American writer was writing a novel. He could not have a good ending for his book until one night when he had a very good idea. He was so excited that he made a phone call to one of his best friends. “I’ve got a perfect idea,” he said, “I’ll put it down later and show it to you.” But he never did, because he died that night. His book was left without a perfect ending. So remember, do what you can right away. Never delay at all.

Dear Boris,
1
After I had spent a week with my English family, I slowly began to understand their English a little better. 2Students in my group are from different cities of Britain and their dialects are different too! Some of their accents are quite strong and they also have their own words and expressions.
3Before I came to England I had thought that fish and chips were eaten every day. That’s quite wrong! I get rather annoyed now when I hear all the foolish words about typical English food.
I had expected to see “London fog”. Do you remember our texts about it? We had no idea that most of this “thick fog” disappeared many years ago when people stopped using coal in their homes. But the idea to speak about weather was very helpful. 4On the other hand, habits are different. People tell me what is typical British here in London is not always typical in Wales or Scotland. 5
But what is ordinary for all British is that they follow traditions(传统). Probably Britain has more living signs of its past than many other countries. And people have always been proud of having ancient (古老的) buildings in capitals, big cities and the countryside.
I will tell you more about Britain in my other letters.
Love from Britain.

D.The family I live with are friendly. |

Maybe you have heard the expression- when in Rome, do as the Romans do. So when you want to do business in France, you have to get to know French culture, to make marketing plans, and to run your business by local laws.
1The French take great pride in their language, so anyone who does not speak it may run the risk of being disrespected by his French colleagues or business partners. Also, another reason why learning French is important is that it is a great way to show every possible French business partner that you care and respect their country’s culture and language.
The first thing you should do when meeting someone new is to shake his hand firmly and always look the person in the eye. In social meeting with friends, kissing is common.
2The French will sometimes introduce themselves using their surname first, followed by their first name.
Dress well. 3Your business clothing is a reflection of your success and social status. Always try to be tasteful and stylish. Women are advised to dress simply but elegantly. Wearing make-up is practised widely by businesswomen.
The French are passionate about food, so lunches are common in doing business in France, which usually consist of an appetizer, a main meal with wine, cheese, dessert and coffee, and normally take up to two hours.4
Do not begin eating until the host says“bon appetite”. Pass dishes to the left, keep wrists above the table and try to eat everything on the plate. 5This may suggest that you find the food tasteless. If eating in a restaurant, the person who invites always pays.
A.The French draw information about people based on their appearance. |
B.This is a time for relationship building. |
C.Remember to be as polite as possible. |
D.Language should be the focus of anyone planning to do business in France. |
E. Be careful with adding salt, pepper or sauces to your food.
F. Use Monsieur or Madame before the surname.
G. Make an appointment with your business partner in advance.

All California students must pass the California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) to receive their high school diploma. The test is first taken in the 10th grade, but retakes are allowed. The CAHSEE consists of two parts: English language arts and mathematics. The contents of the exam are based on the California state curriculum in those subjects. A scale score of 350 in each part is required to pass.
To pass the CAHSEE, concentrate on studying the types of questions asked on the exam, and don’t worry about information that will not be asked. The mathematics section includes statistics, data analysis, probability, number sense, mathematical reasoning, measurement, geometry and grades 6 and 7 algebra. You will also need to know how to work with fractions, decimals and percentages. The English language arts sections covers vocabulary, decoding, comprehension and your ability to read and analyze short passages of text. You will also need to know basic spelling, grammar and punctuation and be able to write a short essay.
You can find CAHSEE practice tests and study guides on the California Department of Education website. To pass the CAHSEE, read these study guides——they contain information about the contents of the exam. Also take several practice tests. The first time, concentrate only on answering the questions and checking your answers. After this, time yourself so you get practice in completing all the questions in good time. Look up the answers on the answer sheets given with the practice tests and make sure you understand any of the answers you got wrong.
One of the best ways to practice for the CAHSEE is to pay attention in the classroom. Your teachers will teach all of the material you need to know to pass the test. If you listen in class, do your homework and ask your teacher for extra help with anything you are having difficulty in understanding, you will have done most of the work you need to pass the CAHSEE. Another everyday way to study is to read for fun. The more you read, the more comfortable you will be with the English language arts skills you need to demonstrate.
When taking the CAHSEE, remain calm and organized. In the English language section, read the questions and passages carefully and make sure you understand what the question is asking before you try to answer. For the essay, take a few minutes to outline your essay before you start writing. Review your work and correct grammar, punctuation and spelling mistakes. In the mathematics section, work through the questions on scrap paper rather than trying to do them in your head. The test has no trick questions. If a question seems confusing, read it again and think about how it applies to the subjects you have studied.
