“ It was great, Dad.”
“Did you see how poor people could be?” the father asked.
“Oh, yeah!” said the son .
“So what did you learn from the trip?” asked the father.
After thinking for a while, the son answered, “I saw that we have a dog ,while they have four. We have a pool in the garden. And they have a small river without an end. At night, We have small lights in the garden, but they  have the stars in the sky. We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around to keep us safe but they have friends.”
You could imagine the look on the father’s face!
Then the son went on, "Thanks, Dad. Now I know how poor we are!”

Justin Bieber’s birthday wish has come true. The teenage star announced earlier this week that he wanted his fans to donate $17,000 to charity---so far the total of gifts that have poured in is more than $31000.
“I have had a great year and it is all because of the fans helping me live my dream,” said the young singer. “I’m turning 17 years old on Tuesday, and have so much to be grateful(感激的) for! So this year, I really want my birthday to be all about helping others. Instead of asking for gifts, I’m asking friends, family and fans to consider donating $17 for my 17th birthday to help make a change.”
Bieber asked his fans to donate to a charity that builds clean water projects in developing countries.
“Together, we’ve made a big difference for many causes. Did you know that about 4,500 kids die each day from waterborne diseases (水源性疾病)? By building clean water projects for villages that need them, we can prevent this! I want to make my birthday matter this year--- let’s make it so more kids can grow up to have a 17th birthday like me. Join me to make a change.
“I’m really so grateful for my family, friends and fans--- and I believe we can do something big to help bring clean water to people in need. Even if you don’t have $17 to give I just ask you to go out in your community and try and make a positive difference. Even the smallest act of kindness can go a long way.”

Like any good mother, when Karen found out that another baby was on the way, she did what she could do to help her 3-year-old son Michael prepare for it. She and her husband found out that the new baby was going to be a girl. Day after day, night after night, Michael sang to his sister in his mom’s tummy (肚子).
Finally, Michael’s little sister was born. But she was in a very serious condition. The doctor told the parents there was very little hope. They kept the baby girl in the intensive care unit (ICU, 重症监护室). Karen was so sad. She decided to plan for her funeral (葬礼). Michael, however, kept begging his parents to let him see his sister. “I want to sing to her,” he would say. Finally Karen decided to take Michael to his sister. This may be the last time he sees her alive.
Michael looked at his baby sister. After a moment, he began to sing. In the pure-hearted voice of a 3-year-old, Michael sang: “You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy when skies are gray.”
Instantly the baby girl seemed to respond. Her pulse rate (脉搏率) began to calm down.
“Keep on singing, Michael,” encouraged Karen with tears in her eyes. “You never know, dear, how much I love you, please don’t take my sunshine away.” As Michael sang to his sister, the baby’s breath became smooth.
After a few days, the little girl was well enough to go home. The doctors called it a miracle (奇迹).

Dogs have long been regarded as a loyal(忠实的) friend of humans. They are not only a good companion to their owners, but also a security guard in some way. However, in fact, dogs do more things than just that. Recently, a British middle school has invited a dog to the classroom. Why? For fun? For security? Or for experiments?
Flossie, a ten-month-old poodle, says “No” to all the above guesses. He is there to help increase students’ reading confidence. It is a little hard to believe, but it’s real.
Vice-headmaster Sue Frost is responsible for training and taking care of the dog. She said, “Flossie has a great influence on students. They are willing to read for him. This is really a good way for students to learn more new words and make new progress.”
Flossie is quite popular among students. Jacob Wicks, an 11-year-old schoolboy, entered the school last November. He said, “I think Flossie is a lovely dog. He always listens to me quietly when I am reading. There is no need for me to worry about negative comments if I don’t read well.” Another student named Jordan Leatherhead said that he liked reading Guinness world Records for Flossie, and that Flossie like listening to him because there are many records about dogs and other animals in the book.
Wow! This is really an interesting teaching method. Why not have a try if you have a pet dog at home?

On a stormy day last August, Tim heard someone shouting. Looking at the sea carefully, he saw that two kids in a rowboat were being pulled out to sea.
Two 12-year-old boys, Christian and Jack, had rowed out in a boat to recover a football. Once they’d rowed beyond the calm waters, a beach umbrella tied to the boat caught the wind and pulled the boat into open water. The boys were terrified and tried to row back to shore. But they were no match for it and the boat was out of control.
Tim knew that it would soon be swallowed by the waves.
“Everything went quiet in my head,” Tim recalls. “I’m trying to figure out how to swim to the boys in a straight line.”
Tim took off his clothes and jumped into the water. Every 500 yards or so, he raised his head to judge his progress. “At one point, I considered turning back,” he says. “I wondered if I was putting my life at risk.” After 30 minutes of struggling, he was close enough to shout to the boys, “Take down the umbrella!”
“Let’s aim for the pier(码头),” Jack said. Tim turned the boat toward it. Soon afterward, waves crashed over the boat, and it began to sink. “Can you swim?” he cried. “A little bit,” the boys said.
Once they were in the water, Tim decided it would be safer and faster for him to pull the boys toward the pier. Christian and Jack were wearing life jackets and floated on their backs. Tim swam toward land as water washed over the boys’ faces.
“Are we almost there?” they asked again and again. “Yes,” Tim told them each time.
After 30 minutes, they reached the pier.
