Celebrating New Year’s Day is one of the oldest and most exciting traditions around the world. Since this festival marks the beginning of the year, New Year’s Day is thought of as a perfect time for a “clean start”. People in the world decide to act better in the year just beginning than the year just ended.
No day has ever been celebrated in so many different ways. All over the world, countries have their own special beliefs about what the New Year means to them.
In Scotland, the New Year is called Hogmanay. In the villages of Scotland, barrels of tar (沥青) are set on fire. It represents that the old year is burned up and the new one is allowed to enter.
New Year’s Day is also the Festival of Saint Basil in Canada. Children leave their shoes by the fireside on New Year’s Day with the hope that Saint Basil, who is famous for his kindness, will come and fill their shoes with gifts.
The Jewish New Year is called Rosh Hashanah. It is an important time when Jews promise to do better in the future. Special services are held in the church, children are given new clothes and New Year bread is cooked to remind people of harvest time.
On New Year’s Day in Japan, everyone gets dressed in their new clothes and homes are decorated (装饰) with bamboos—symbols of long life.
In European countries such as Germany, France and Belgium, families start the New Year by first attending church services. Afterwards, they visit friends and relatives. In France, boys and girls receive gifts of money on New Year’s Day.

Habits in Russia

There is an old saying that says when in Rome, do as the Romans do. I learned the meaning of this when I stayed in Russia as a visiting scholar(学者).

One day I invited some of my Chinese friends to a famous local restaurant in Moscow. My guests and I were excited about our meeting. We had a lively talk until the waiter told me that we were too loud. We lowered(降低)our voices.(38) The waiter came over to us two more times with the same message.

How bad an impression(印象)we must have left on the local people! In China,it's natural and important for a host(主人)to make a lively atmosphere(气氛). However, in Russia and Western countries, having a meal in a public place means you must keep your voice low. You need to be polite to others.

I felt bad about this.(39)

(40) My Russian friend Andrey always looks around and thinks for a while before leaving home. I asked him why he did this. "Aha," Andrey said, "In Russia, people always spend about a minute going over things and plans in their minds before leaving home.(41) "

Finding the differences between cultures is so much fun. I like to keep my eyes and mind open.

This morning I got an email from Roy. It seems that my boy really enjoys his new life at Harvard University.

The email made me think of the first day when we moved into this house.

Little Roy ran around the new house with great excitement and tried to move his own things into the house such as his toys, books and clothes. Suddenly his little hand knocked over a bottle of paint on the shelf. The paint made the tidy floor and white wall a terrible mess. "Oh,my God!" My wife rushed in angrily. I looked at my son, and his small face was filled with fear.

I smiled and held his hand, "Take it easy,Roy.Now let's do something to make it look nice." I took out a brush." You see, Dad is a magician. I can change it into a big tree."

His mother soon joined us and helped paint some flowers on the wall.

We spent the whole afternoon painting and laughing. The wall became a beautiful forest with plants, birds and small animals. Blue sky and white clouds were also painted by Roy. On that day, everyone in the house knew something special happened.

The night before Roy left for Harvard, he asked me if I still remembered the day when he had knocked over the paint. "Since then I've never worried about making mistakes," he continued, "I believe I can always find out ways to solve the problems."

That's for sure. Mistakes are unavoidable. Making mistakes is part of life. When we make a mistake, what we shouldn't do is to run away from it. The mistake can be valuable if we can make full use of it. In fact, our attitudes (态度) towards them may make a difference.

Thanks to better health care, most people are living healthier and longer lives. It is even thought that in the future more and more people will celebrate their hundredth birthdays. Here are some rules for a health life.

Get off the sofa!

Sure, it is comfortable to sit on the sofa and watch TV. But doctors say you should get off the sofa. To keep fit, you have to walk at least 10000steps every day. In the past, people's jobs required more physical effort. They often had to walk for miles every day. When farmers were working in the fields, they were keeping fit at the same time. Think about it: Do you get the same amount of exercise today as they did in the past?

Eat healthy food!

It is important to eat food that is fresh and natural, for example, fruit and vegetables. Fast food is not healthy. You should only have itonce in a while. Eating too much of the wrong food will harm your health.

Rest while you can!

When we were babies, we slept for much of the night. Teenagers do not need as much sleep as babies, but it is important for you to get about eight hours' sleep a night. At weekends, you have got more time, so use it not just for your friends, but for rest too.

Do not worry, be happy!

Many people believe that happiness is important for our general health. Sometimes it is not easy to be a teenager because of the difficulties of school, exams or friendships. If you are worried about something, talk to your parents or your teacher.
