You may hear about earthquakes, but do you know what to do before, during and after an earthquake? Here is some advice for you:
Before an earthquake   It is necessary to prepare yourself and your family. All family members should know how to turn off gas, water and electricity and know useful telephone numbers ( doctor, hospital, police and 119 etc.). Never put heavy things over beds.
During an earthquake   It is important for each of you to stay calm. If you are indoors, quickly move to a safe place in the room such as under a strong desk or table. The purpose is to protect yourself from falling things. Stay away from windows, large mirrors, heavy fumiture and so on. If you are cooking, turn off the gas. If you are outdoors, move to an open area like a playground. Move away from buildings, bridges and trees. If you are driving, stop the car as soon as possible, staying away from bridges and tall buildings, stay in your car.
After an earthquake  ONCE the shaking has stopped, DO NOT run out of the building at once. It is better to wait and leave when it is safe. Check around you and help the people who are in trouble. If your building is badly broken, you should leave it. If you smell or hear gas, get everyone outside and open windows and doors. If you can do it safely, turn off the gas. Report it to the gas company.

Do you know why different animals or pests(害虫)have their special colours? Colours in them seem to be used mainly to protect themselves.
Some birds like eating locusts(蝗虫),but birds cannot easily catch them. Why? It is because locusts change their colours together with the change of the colours of crops. When crops are green, locusts look green. But as the harvest time comes, locusts change to the same brown colour as crops have. Some other pests with different colours from plants are easily found and eaten by others. So they have to hide themselves for lives and appear only at night.
If you study the animal life, you’ll find the main use of colouring is protecting themselves. Bears, lions and other animals move quietly through forests. They cannot be seen by hunters. This is because they have the colours much like the tree.
Have you ever noticed an even more strange act? A kind of fish in the sea can send out a kind of very black liquid(液体)when it faces danger. While the liquid spread over, the enemies(敌人)cannot find it. And it immediately(立即)swims away. So it has lived up to now though it isn’t strong at all.
How can pests with different colours from plants keep out of danger?

A.They run away quickly.
B.Their colours are much like their enemies.
C.They hide themselves in the day and appear at night.
D.They have to move quietly.

The kind of fish can live up to now because .

A.it is very big and strong
B.the liquid it sends out can help it escape from its enemies
C.the liquid it sends out can kill its enemies
D.it swims faster than any other fish

My grandfather is eighty years old. He always complains(抱怨)about how fast things have changed, and he often says that life used to be better.
“Families aren’t the ones the way they used to be. A lot of families have broken up. If husband and wife have problems with their marriage, they no longer stay together. And mothers used to stay at home and take care of their children, but now everyone is busy working. No one has time to look after children at home.
And the cars! No one walks anymore; more and more people drive. We used to walk five miles to school on schooldays, even in winter. But now we don’t. And in school, children don’t have to think anymore. In math class, for example, we used to add, subtract, multiply and divide(加减乘除) using our heads. But now kids don’t use their heads anymore; instead, they use calculators(计算器).
Most families have computers now. In the past we didn’t have computers. We didn’t even have lights. My mother used to spend all day cooking in the kitchen. But now we don’t often eat home-cooked food.
And people talk less to each other than before. They are too busy to talk, too busy to eat, too busy to think ...
Life used to be simple, but it isn’t anymore.”

I can still remember my first day at school. I was only 6 years old at that time. It was a very big room. I sat at the desk near the window, but I couldn’t see anything because the window was too high. There was a big map of the world on the wall and an old blackboard. I don’t think I was worried or afraid at that time. There was another little boy next to me. He sat there and kept silent at first. Then he began to cry, because he didn’t want to stay there.
More and more students came in, but the boy didn’t stop crying. “Mom, I want to go home.” He cried again and again. Later, the teacher came in. She went to the little boy, and said something to him. I couldn’t hear what she said. Soon the boy stopped crying and began to smile. To this day, I still don’t know what the teacher said to the little boy.
